Ahaziah’s Messengers Meet Elijah

1 Then Moab rebelled against Israēl after the death of Ahab.

1 And Moab repelled against Israēl after the death of Achaab. 1 And Moab repelled against Israēl after the death of Achaab.

2 And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease.

2 And Ochozias fell through the lattice that was in his upper chamber in Samaria and was sick; and he sent messengers, and said to them, Go and inquire of Baal fly, the god of Accaron, whether I shall recover of this my sickness. And they went to inquire of him. 2 And Ochozias fell through the lattice that was in his upper chamber in Samaria and was sick; and he sent messengers, and said to them, Go and inquire of Baal fly, the god of Accaron, whether I shall recover of this my sickness. And they went to inquire of him.

3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israēl, that you go to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron?

3 καὶ ἄγγελος κυρίου ἐλάλησεν πρὸς Ἠλίου τὸν Θεσβίτην λέγων ἀναστὰς δεῦρο εἰς συνάντησιν τῶν ἀγγέλων Ὀχοζίου βασιλέως Σαμαρείας καὶ λαλήσεις πρὸς αὐτούς εἰ παρὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι θεὸν ἐν Ἰσραὴλ ὑμεῖς πορεύεσθε ἐπιζητῆσαι ἐν τῇ Βάαλ μυῖαν θεὸν Ἀκκαρών; 3 καὶ ἄγγελος Κυρίου ἐκάλεσεν Ἠλιοὺ τὸν Θεσβίτην λέγων· ἀναστὰς δεῦρο εἰς συνάντησιν τῶν ἀγγέλων Ὀχοζίου βασιλέως Σαμαρείας καὶ λαλήσεις πρὸς αὐτούς· εἰ παρὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι Θεὸν ἐν Ἰσραὴλ ὑμεῖς πορεύεσθε ἐπιζητῆσαι ἐν τῷ Βάαλ μυῖαν θεὸν Ἀκκαρών;
3 And an angel of the Lord called Eliu the Thesbite, saying, Arise, and go to meet the messengers of Ochozias king of Samaria, and you shall say to them, Is it because there is no God in Israēl, that you go to inquire of Baal fly, the God of Accaron? but it shall not be so.

4 Now therefore thus says the LORD, You shall not come down from that bed on which you are gone up, but shall surely die. And Elijah departed.

4 For thus says the Lord, The bed on which you are gone up, you shall not come down from it, for you shall surely die. And Eliu went, and said so to them. 4 For thus says the Lord, The bed on which you are gone up, you shall not come down from it, for you shall surely die. And Eliu went, and said so to them.

5 And when the messengers turned back unto him, he said unto them, Why are you now turned back?

5 καὶ ἐπεστράφησαν οἱ ἄγγελοι πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς τί ὅτι ἐπεστρέψατε; 5 καὶ ἐπεστράφησαν οἱ ἄγγελοι πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· τί ὅτι ἐπεστρέψατε;
5 And the messengers returned to him, and he said to them, Why have you returned? 5 And the messengers returned to him, and he said to them, Why have you returned?

6 And they said unto him, There came a man up to meet us, and said unto us, Go, turn again unto the king that sent you, and say unto him, Thus says the LORD, Is it not because there is not a God in Israēl, that you send to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron? therefore you shall not come down from that bed on which you are gone up, but shall surely die.

6 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν ἀνὴρ ἀνέβη εἰς συνάντησιν ἡμῶν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς ἡμᾶς δεῦτε ἐπιστράφητε πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα τὸν ἀποστείλαντα ὑμᾶς καὶ λαλήσατε πρὸς αὐτόν τάδε λέγει κύριος εἰ παρὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι θεὸν ἐν Ἰσραὴλ σὺ πορεύῃ ζητῆσαι ἐν τῇ Βάαλ μυῖαν θεὸν Ἀκκαρών;
6 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν· ἀνὴρ ἀνέβη εἰς συνάντησιν ἡμῶν καὶ εἶπε πρὸς ἡμᾶς· δεῦτε ἐπιστράφητε πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα τὸν ἀποστείλαντα ὑμᾶς καὶ λαλήσατε πρὸς αὐτόν· τάδε λέγει Κύριος· εἰ παρὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι Θεὸν ἐν Ἰσραὴλ σὺ πορεύῃ ἐπιζητῆσαι ἐν τῷ Βάαλ μυῖαν θεὸν Ἀκκαρών;
6 And they said to him, A man came up to meet us, and said to us, Go, return to the king that sent you, and say to him, Thus says the Lord, Is it because there is no God in Israēl, that you go to inquire of Baal fly, the God of Accaron? it shall not be so: the bed on which you are gone up, you shall not come down from it, for you shall surely die.

7 And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words?

7 καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγων τίς κρίσις τοῦ ἀνδρὸς τοῦ ἀναβάντος εἰς συνάντησιν ὑμῖν καὶ λαλήσαντος πρὸς ὑμᾶς τοὺς λόγους τούτους; 7 καὶ ἐλάλησε πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγων· τίς κρίσις τοῦ ἀνδρὸς τοῦ ἀναβάντος εἰς συνάντησιν ὑμῖν καὶ λαλήσαντος πρὸς ὑμᾶς τοὺς λόγους τούτους;
7 So they returned and reported to the king as Eliu said: and he said to them, What was the manner of the man who went up to mid you, and spoke to you these words? 7 So they returned and reported to the king as Eliu said: and he said to them, What was the manner of the man who went up to mid you, and spoke to you these words?

8 And they answered him, He was a hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.

8 And they said to him, He was a hairy man, and girt with a leathern girdle about his loins. And he said, This is Eliu the Thesbite. 8 And they said to him, He was a hairy man, and girt with a leathern girdle about his loins. And he said, This is Eliu the Thesbite.

9 Then the king sent unto him a captain of 50 with his 50. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of a hill. And he spoke unto him, You man of God, the king has said, Come down.

10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of 50, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume you and your 50. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his 50.

11 Again also he sent unto him another captain of 50 with his 50. And he answered and said unto him, Oh man of God, thus has the king said, Come down quickly.

12 And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume you and your 50. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his 50.

13 And he sent again a captain of the third 50 with his 50. And the third captain of 50 went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, Oh man of God, I pray you, let my life, and the life of these 50 your servants, be precious in your sight.

13 And the king sent yet again a captain and his 50. And the third captain of 50 came, and knelt on his knees before Eliu, and entreated him, and spoke to him and said, Oh man of God, let my life, and the life of these 50 your servants, be precious in your eyes. 13 And the king sent yet again a captain and his 50. And the third captain of 50 came, and knelt on his knees before Eliu, and entreated him, and spoke to him and said, Oh man of God, let my life, and the life of these 50 your servants, be precious in your eyes.

14 Behold, there came fire down from heaven, and burned up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties: therefore let my life now be precious in your sight.

15 And the angel of the LORD said unto Elijah, Go down with him: isn’t afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.

16 And he said unto him, Thus says the LORD, Forasmuch as you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israēl to inquire of his word? therefore you shall not come down off that bed on which you are gone up, but shall surely die.

16 καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν Ἠλίου τάδε λέγει κύριος τί ὅτι ἀπέστειλας ἀγγέλους ζητῆσαι ἐν τῇ Βάαλ μυῖαν θεὸν Ἀκκαρών;

16 καὶ ἐλάλησε πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπε Ἠλιού· τάδε λέγει Κύριος· τί ὅτι ἀπέστειλας ἀγγέλους ἐκζητῆσαι ἐν τῷ Βάαλ μυῖαν θεὸν Ἀκκαρών;
16 And Eliu spoke to him, and said, Thus says the Lord, Why have you sent messengers to inquire of Baal fly, the god of Accaron? it shall not be so: the bed on which you are gone up, you shall not come down from it, for you shall surely die. 16 And Eliu spoke to him, and said, Thus says the Lord, Why have you sent messengers to inquire of Baal fly, the god of Accaron? it shall not be so: the bed on which you are gone up, you shall not come down from it, for you shall surely die.

Jehoram Reigns over Israēl

17 So he died according to the word of the LORD which Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah; because he had no son.

17 So he died according to the word of the Lord which Eliu has spoken. 17 So he died according to the word of the Lord which Eliu has spoken.

18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israēl?

18 And the rest of the acts of Ochozias which he did, behold, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israēl? 18 And the rest of the acts of Ochozias which he did, behold, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israēl?
