Ahaz Reigns over Judah

1 In the 17th year of Pekah the son of Remaliah Ahaz the son of Jotham king of Judah began to reign.

בִּשְׁנַת֙ שְׁבַֽע־עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה שָׁנָ֔ה לְפֶ֖קַח בֶּן־רְמַלְיָ֑הוּ מָלַ֛ךְ אָחָ֥ז בֶּן־יֹותָ֖ם מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃

2 Twenty years old was Ahaz when he began to reign, and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem, and didn’t what was right in the sight of the LORD his God, like David his father.

בֶּן־עֶשְׂרִ֤ים שָׁנָה֙ אָחָ֣ז בְּמָלְכֹ֔ו וְשֵׁשׁ־עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה שָׁנָ֔ה מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְלֹא־עָשָׂ֣ה הַיָּשָׁ֗ר בְּעֵינֵ֛י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָ֖יו כְּדָוִ֥ד אָבִֽיו׃

3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israēl, yes, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israēl.

וַיֵּ֕לֶךְ בְּדֶ֖רֶךְ מַלְכֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְגַ֤ם אֶת־בְּנֹו֙ הֶעֱבִ֣יר בָּאֵ֔שׁ כְּתֹֽעֲבֹות֙ הַגֹּויִ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֹורִ֤ישׁ יְהוָה֙ אֹתָ֔ם מִפְּנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

3 καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἐν ὁδῷ Ἰεροβοὰμ υἱοῦ Ναβὰτ βασιλέως Ἰσραὴλ καί γε τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ διῆγεν ἐν πυρὶ κατὰ τὰ βδελύγματα τῶν ἐθνῶν, ὧν ἐξῆρεν κύριος ἀπὸ προσώπου τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ, 3 καὶ ἐπορεύθης, ἐν ὁδῷ βασιλέων Ἰσραήλ, καί γε τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ διῆγεν ἐν πυρὶ κατὰ τὰ βδελύγματα τῶν ἐθνῶν, ὧν ἐξῇρε Κύριος ἀπὸ προσώπου τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ,

4 And he sacrificed and burned incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

וַיְזַבֵּ֧חַ וַיְקַטֵּ֛ר בַּבָּמֹ֖ות וְעַל־הַגְּבָעֹ֑ות וְתַ֖חַת כָּל־עֵ֥ץ רַעֲנָֽן׃

5 Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israēl came up to Jerusalem to war: and they besieged Ahaz, but couldn’t overcome him.

אָ֣ז יַעֲלֶ֣ה רְצִ֣ין מֶֽלֶךְ־אֲ֠רָם וּפֶ֨קַח בֶּן־רְמַלְיָ֧הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וַיָּצֻ֙רוּ֙ עַל־אָחָ֔ז וְלֹ֥א יָכְל֖וּ לְהִלָּחֵֽם׃


6 At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria, and drove the Jews from Elath: and the Syrians came to Elath, and dwelt there unto this day.

בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֗יא הֵ֠שִׁיב רְצִ֨ין מֶֽלֶךְ־אֲרָ֤ם אֶת־אֵילַת֙ לַֽאֲרָ֔ם וַיְנַשֵּׁ֥ל אֶת־הַיְהוּדִ֖ים מֵֽאֵילֹ֑ות בָּ֣אוּ אֵילַ֔ת וַיֵּ֣שְׁבוּ שָׁ֔ם עַ֖ד הַיֹּ֥ום הַזֶּֽה׃


Ahaz Seeks Help of Aram

7 So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, I am your servant and your son: come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israēl, which rise up against me.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח אָחָ֜ז מַלְאָכִ֗ים אֶל־תִּ֠גְלַת פְּלֶ֤סֶר מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁוּר֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר עַבְדְּךָ֥ וּבִנְךָ֖ אָ֑נִי עֲלֵ֨ה וְהֹושִׁעֵ֜נִי מִכַּ֣ף מֶֽלֶךְ־אֲרָ֗ם וּמִכַּף֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַקֹּומִ֖ים עָלָֽי׃

8 καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἀχὰζ τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ τὸ χρυσίον τὸ εὑρεθὲν ἐν θησαυροῖς οἴκου κυρίου καὶ οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τῷ βασιλεῖ δῶρα. 8 καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἄχαζ ἀργύριον καὶ χρυσίον τὸ εὑρεθὲν ἐν θησαυροῖς οἴκου Κυρίου καὶ οἴκου βασιλέως καὶ ἀπέστειλε τῷ βασιλεῖ δῶρα.

9 And the king of Assyria listened unto him: for the king of Assyria went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried the people of it captive to Kir, and slew Rezin.

9 καὶ ἤκουσεν αὐτοῦ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων, καὶ ἀνέβη βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων εἰς Δαμασκὸν καὶ συνέλαβεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἀπῴκισεν αὐτὴν καὶ τὸν Ῥαασσὼν ἐθανάτωσεν. 9 καὶ ἤκουσεν αὐτοῦ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων, καὶ ἀνέβη βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων εἰς Δαμασκὸν καὶ συνέλαβεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἀπῴκισεν αὐτὴν καὶ τὸν Ῥαασσὼν βασιλέα ἐθανάτωσε.

Damascus Falls

10 And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and saw an altar that was at Damascus: and king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the fashion of the altar, and the pattern of it, according to all the workmanship of it.

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ אָחָ֡ז לִ֠קְרַאת תִּגְלַ֨ת פִּלְאֶ֤סֶר מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁוּר֙ דּוּמֶּ֔שֶׂק וַיַּ֥רְא אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּדַמָּ֑שֶׂק וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ אָחָ֜ז אֶל־אוּרִיָּ֣ה הַכֹּהֵ֗ן אֶת־דְּמ֧וּת הַמִּזְבֵּ֛חַ וְאֶת־תַּבְנִיתֹ֖ו לְכָֽל־מַעֲשֵֽׂהוּ׃

10 καὶ ἐπορεύθης βασιλεὺς Ἄχαζ εἰς Δαμασκὸν εἰς ἀπαντὴν Θαγλαθφελλασὰρ βασιλεῖ Ἀσσυρίων εἰς Δαμασκόν.
καὶ εἶδε τὸ θυσιαστήριον ἐν Δαμασκῶ, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν βασιλεὺς Ἄχαζ πρὸς Οὐρίαν τὸν ἱερέα τὸ ὁμοίωμα τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ τὸν ῥῦσαί αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶσαν ποίησιν αὐτοῦ·

11 And Urijah the priest built an altar according to all that king Ahaz had sent from Damascus: so Urijah the priest made it against king Ahaz came from Damascus.

וַיִּ֛בֶן אוּרִיָּ֥ה הַכֹּהֵ֖ן אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ כְּכֹ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַח֩ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ אָחָ֜ז מִדַּמֶּ֗שֶׂק כֵּ֤ן עָשָׂה֙ אוּרִיָּ֣ה הַכֹּהֵ֔ן עַד־בֹּ֥וא הַמֶּֽלֶךְ־אָחָ֖ז מִדַּמָּֽשֶׂק׃

12 And when the king was come from Damascus, the king saw the altar: and the king approached to the altar, and offered on it.

וַיָּבֹ֤א הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ מִדַּמֶּ֔שֶׂק וַיַּ֥רְא הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וַיִּקְרַ֥ב הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ וַיַּ֥עַל עָלָֽיו׃


13 and he burned his burnt offering and his food offering, and poured his drink offering, and sprinkled the blood of his peace offerings, upon the altar.

וַיַּקְטֵ֤ר אֶת־עֹֽלָתֹו֙ וְאֶת־מִנְחָתֹ֔ו וַיַּסֵּ֖ךְ אֶת־נִסְכֹּ֑ו וַיִּזְרֹ֛ק אֶת־דַּֽם־הַשְּׁלָמִ֥ים אֲשֶׁר־לֹ֖ו עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃

13 καὶ ἐθυμίασεν τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν θυσίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν σπονδὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ προσέχεεν τὸ αἷμα τῶν εἰρηνικῶν τῶν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον. 13 καὶ ἐθυμίασε τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν θυσίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν σπονδὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ προσέχεε τὸ αἷμα τῶν εἰρηνικῶν τῶν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον

וְאֵ֨ת הַמִּזְבַּ֣ח הַנְּחֹשֶׁת֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָה֒ וַיַּקְרֵ֗ב מֵאֵת֙ פְּנֵ֣י הַבַּ֔יִת מִבֵּין֙ הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ וּמִבֵּ֖ין בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתֹ֛ו עַל־יֶ֥רֶךְ הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ צָפֹֽונָה׃


15 And king Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening food offering, and the king’s burned sacrifice, and his food offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their food offering, and their drink offerings; and sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the copper-alloy altar shall be for me to inquire by.

הַמֶּֽלֶךְ־אָ֠חָז אֶת־אוּרִיָּ֨ה הַכֹּהֵ֜ן לֵאמֹ֗ר עַ֣ל הַמִּזְבֵּ֣חַ הַגָּדֹ֡ול הַקְטֵ֣ר אֶת־עֹֽלַת־הַבֹּקֶר֩ וְאֶת־מִנְחַ֨ת הָעֶ֜רֶב וְֽאֶת־עֹלַ֧ת הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ וְאֶת־מִנְחָתֹ֗ו וְ֠אֵת עֹלַ֞ת כָּל־עַ֤ם הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ וּמִנְחָתָ֣ם וְנִסְכֵּיהֶ֔ם וְכָל־דַּ֥ם עֹלָ֛ה וְכָל־דַּם־זֶ֖בַח עָלָ֣יו תִּזְרֹ֑ק וּמִזְבַּ֧ח הַנְּחֹ֛שֶׁת יִֽהְיֶה־לִּ֖י לְבַקֵּֽר׃

15 καὶ ἐνετείλατο βασιλεὺς Ἀχὰζ τῷ Οὐρία τῷ ἱερεῖ λέγων ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ μέγα πρόσφερε τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν τὴν πρωινὴν καὶ τὴν θυσίαν τὴν ἑσπερινὴν καὶ τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τὴν θυσίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ τὴν θυσίαν αὐτῶν καὶ τὴν σπονδὴν αὐτῶν καὶ πᾶν αἷμα ὁλοκαυτώσεως καὶ πᾶν αἷμα θυσίας ἐπ’ αὐτὸ προσχεεῖς· καὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ χαλκοῦν ἔσται μοι εἰς τὸ πρωί. 15 καὶ ἐνετείλατο βασιλεὺς Ἄχαζ τῷ Οὐρίᾳ τῷ ἱερεῖ λέγων· ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ μέγα πρόσφερε τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν τὴν πρωϊνὴν καὶ τὴν θυσίαν τὴν ἑσπερινήν, καὶ τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τὴν θυσίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν ὁλοκαύτωσιν παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ τὴν θυσίαν αὐτῶν καὶ τὴν σπονδὴν αὐτῶν καὶ πᾶν αἷμα ὁλοκαυτώσεως καὶ πᾶν αἷμα θυσίας ἐπ’ αὐτῷ ἐκχεεῖς· καὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ χαλκοῦν ἔσται μοι εἰς τὸ πρωΐ.

16 Thus did Urijah the priest, according to all that king Ahaz commanded.

וַיַּ֖עַשׂ אוּרִיָּ֣ה הַכֹּהֵ֑ן כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֖ה הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ אָחָֽז׃

17 And king Ahaz cut off the borders of the bases, and removed the laver from off them; and took down the sea from off the copper-alloy oxen that were under it, and put it upon a pavement of stones.

וַיְקַצֵּץ֩ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ אָחָ֜ז אֶת־הַמִּסְגְּרֹ֣ות הַמְּכֹנֹ֗ות וַיָּ֤סַר מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶם֙ וְאֶת־הַיָּ֣ם הֹורִ֔ד מֵעַ֛ל הַבָּקָ֥ר הַנְּחֹ֖שֶׁת אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּחְתֶּ֑יהָ וַיִּתֵּ֣ן אֹתֹ֔ו עַ֖ל מַרְצֶ֥פֶת אֲבָנִֽים׃


18 And the covert for the sabbath that they had built in the house, and the king’s entry without, turned he from the house of the LORD for the king of Assyria.

וְאֶת־ הַשַּׁבָּ֜ת אֲשֶׁר־בָּנ֣וּ בַבַּ֗יִת וְאֶת־מְבֹ֤וא הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ הַֽחִיצֹ֔ונָה הֵסֵ֖ב בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה מִפְּנֵ֖י מֶ֥לֶךְ אַשּֽׁוּר׃

19 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaz which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

וְיֶ֛תֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י אָחָ֖ז אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה הֲלֹא־הֵ֣ם כְּתוּבִ֗ים עַל־סֵ֛פֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י הַיָּמִ֖ים לְמַלְכֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה׃

19 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ἀχάζ, ὅσα ἐποίησεν, οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰούδα; 19 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ἄχαζ, ὅσα ἐποίησεν, οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰούδα;

וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב אָחָז֙ עִם־אֲבֹתָ֔יו וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר עִם־אֲבֹתָ֖יו בְּעִ֣יר דָּוִ֑ד וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ חִזְקִיָּ֥הוּ בְנֹ֖ו תַּחְתָּֽיו׃
