Jonah’s Prayer

1 [LXX=2:2] Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly,

וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֣ל יֹונָ֔ה אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהָ֑יו מִמְּעֵ֖י הַדָּגָֽה׃

2 [LXX=2:3] And said, I cried by reason of my affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and you heard my voice.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר קָ֠רָאתִי מִצָּ֥רָה לִ֛י אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי מִבֶּ֧טֶן שְׁאֹ֛ול שִׁוַּ֖עְתִּי שָׁמַ֥עְתָּ קֹולִֽי׃

2 [LXX=2:3] καὶ εἶπεν Ἐβόησα ἐν θλίψει μου πρὸς κύριον τὸν θεόν μου,
καὶ εἰσήκουσέν μου· ἐκ κοιλίας ᾅδου κραυγῆς μου ἤκουσας φωνῆς μου. 		2 [LXX=2:3] καὶ εἶπε· Ἐβόησα ἐν θλίψει μου πρὸς Κύριον τὸν Θεόν μου,
καὶ εἰσήκουσέν μου· ἐκ κοιλίας ᾅδου κραυγῆς μου ἤκουσας φωνῆς μου.

3 [LXX=2:4] For you had cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods surrounded me about: all your billows and your waves passed over me.

וַתַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤נִי מְצוּלָה֙ בִּלְבַ֣ב יַמִּ֔ים וְנָהָ֖ר יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי כָּל־מִשְׁבָּרֶ֥יךָ וְגַלֶּ֖יךָ עָלַ֥י עָבָֽרוּ׃

3 [LXX=2:4] ἀπέρριψάς με εἰς βάθη καρδίας θαλάσσης,
καὶ ποταμοί με ἐκύκλωσαν· πάντες οἱ μετεωρισμοί σου καὶ τὰ κύματά σου ἐπ’ ἐμὲ διῆλθον. 		3 [LXX=2:4] ἀπέρριψάς με εἰς βάθη καρδίας θαλάσσης,
καὶ ποταμοὶ ἐκύκλωσάν με· πάντες οἱ μετεωρισμοί σου καὶ τὰ κύματά σου ἐπ’ ἐμὲ διῆλθον.

4 [LXX=2:5] Then I said, I am cast out of your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.

וַאֲנִ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי נִגְרַ֖שְׁתִּי מִנֶּ֣גֶד עֵינֶ֑יךָ אַ֚ךְ אֹוסִ֣יף לְהַבִּ֔יט אֶל־הֵיכַ֖ל קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃

4 [LXX=2:5] καὶ ἐγὼ εἶπα Ἀπῶσμαι ἐξ ὀφθαλμῶν σου· ἆρα προσθήσω τοῦ ἐπιβλέψαι πρὸς τὸν ναὸν τὸν ἅγιόν σου; 4 [LXX=2:5] καὶ ἐγὼ εἶπα· ἀπῶσμαι ἐξ ὀφθαλμῶν σου· ἆρα προσθήσω τοῦ ἐπιβλέψαι με πρὸς ναὸν τὸν ἅγιόν σου;

5 [LXX=2:6] The waters surrounded me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

אֲפָפ֤וּנִי מַ֙יִם֙ עַד־נֶ֔פֶשׁ תְּהֹ֖ום יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי ס֖וּף חָב֥וּשׁ לְרֹאשִֽׁי׃

5 [LXX=2:6] περιεχύθη ὕδωρ μοι ἕως ψυχῆς,
ἄβυσσος ἐκύκλωσέν με ἐσχάτη,
ἔδυ ἡ κεφαλή μου εἰς σχισμὰς ὀρέων. 		5 [LXX=2:6] περιεχύθη μοι ὕδωρ ἕως ψυχῆς,
ἄβυσσος ἐκύκλωσέ με ἐσχάτη,

6 [LXX=2:7] I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me forever: yet have you brought up my life from corruption, Oh LORD my God.

לְקִצְבֵ֤י הָרִים֙ יָרַ֔דְתִּי הָאָ֛רֶץ בְּרִחֶ֥יהָ בַעֲדִ֖י לְעֹולָ֑ם וַתַּ֧עַל מִשַּׁ֛חַת חַיַּ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽי׃

6 [LXX=2:7] κατέβην εἰς γῆν,
ἧς οἱ μοχλοὶ αὐτῆς κάτοχοι αἰώνιοι,
καὶ ἀναβήτω φθορὰ ζωῆς μου,
κύριε ὁ θεός μου. 		6 [LXX=2:7] κατέβην εἰς γῆν,
ἧς οἱ μοχλοὶ αὐτῆς κάτοχοι αἰώνιοι,
καὶ ἀναβήτω ἐκ φθορᾶς ἡ ζωή μου,
πρὸς σὲ Κύριε ὁ Θεός μου.

7 [LXX=2:8] When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto you, into your holy temple.

בְּהִתְעַטֵּ֤ף עָלַי֙ נַפְשִׁ֔י אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה זָכָ֑רְתִּי וַתָּבֹ֤וא אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ תְּפִלָּתִ֔י אֶל־הֵיכַ֖ל קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃

7 [LXX=2:8] ἐν τῷ ἐκλείπειν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ τὴν ψυχήν μου τοῦ κυρίου ἐμνήσθην,
καὶ ἔλθοι πρὸς σὲ ἡ προσευχή μου εἰς ναὸν ἅγιόν σου. 		7 [LXX=2:8] ἐν τῷ ἐκλείπειν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ τὴν ψυχήν μου τοῦ Κυρίου ἐμνήσθην,
καὶ ἔλθοι πρὸς σὲ ἡ προσευχή μου εἰς ναὸν τὸ ἅγιόν σου.

8 [LXX=2:9] They who observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

מְשַׁמְּרִ֖ים הַבְלֵי־שָׁ֑וְא חַסְדָּ֖ם יַעֲזֹֽבוּ׃

9 [LXX=2:10] But I will sacrifice unto you with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

וַאֲנִ֗י בְּקֹ֤ול תֹּודָה֙ אֶזְבְּחָה־לָּ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָדַ֖רְתִּי אֲשַׁלֵּ֑מָה יְשׁוּעָ֖תָה לַיהוָֽה׃

9 [LXX=2:10] ἐγὼ δὲ μετὰ φωνῆς αἰνέσεως καὶ ἐξομολογήσεως θύσω σοί ὅσα ηὐξάμην,
ἀποδώσω σοί σωτηρίου τῷ κυρίῳ. 		9 [LXX=2:10] ἐγὼ δὲ μετὰ φωνῆς αἰνέσεως καὶ ἐξομολογήσεως θύσω σοι,

10 [LXX=2:11] And the LORD spoke unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה לַדָּ֑ג וַיָּקֵ֥א אֶת־יֹונָ֖ה אֶל־הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃

10 [LXX=2:11] καὶ προσετάγη τῷ κήτει,
καὶ ἐξέβαλεν τὸν Ἰωνᾶν ἐπὶ τὴν ξηράν. 		10 [LXX=2:11] Καὶ προσέταξε Κύριος τῷ κήτει,
καὶ ἐξέβαλε τὸν Ἰωνᾶν ἐπὶ τὴν ξηράν.
