Chapter 12

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, Why passed you over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didn’t call us to go with you? we will burn your house upon you with fire.

1 Καὶ συνήχθησαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἐφραὶμ καὶ ἦλθον εἰς Σεφινὰ καὶ εἶπον πρὸς Ἰεφθάε Τί ὅτι ἐπορεύθης πολεμεῖν ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἀμμὼν καὶ ἡμᾶς οὐ κέκληκας πορευθῆναι μετὰ σου;
καὶ παρῆλθαν εἰς βορρᾶν καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Ἰεφθάε· διὰ τί παρῆλθες παρατάξασθαι ἐν υἱοῖς Ἀμμὼν καὶ ἡμᾶς οὐ κέκληκας πορευθῆναι μετὰ σου;
1 And the sons of Ephraim gathered together, and they came to Sephina and said to Jephthae, “Why did you go to fight against the sons of Ammōn and didn’t call us to go with you? We will burn your house with fire!” 1 And a man of Ephraim called out, and they passed by to the north and said to Jephthae, “Why did you pass by to deploy troops against the sons of Ammōn and didn’t call us to go with you? We will burn your house with fire over you!”

2 And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, you delivered me not out of their hands.

2 And Jephthae said to them, “I was a man facing opponents, I and my people, and the sons of Ammōn were humbling me greatly. And I called out to you, and you didn’t deliver me out of their hand. 2 And Jephthae said to them, “I was a warrior man, I and my people and the sons of Ammōn, greatly. And I called you, and you didn’t deliver me from their hand.

3 And when I saw that you delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: why then are you come up unto me this day, to fight against me?

καὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτοὺς κύριος ἐν χειρί μου· καὶ ἵνα τί ἀνέβητε πρός με τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ τοῦ πολεμεῖν ἐν ἐμοί;
καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοὺς κύριος ἐν χειρί μου· καὶ εἰς τί ἀνέβητε ἐπ’ ἐμὲ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ παρατάξασθαι ἐν ἐμοί;
3 And I saw that there was none to deliver, and I put my life in my hand and crossed over against the sons of Ammōn, and the Lord gave them up in my hand. And why have you come up to me this day, to fight against me?” 3 And I saw that you were not a savior, and I put my life in my hand and passed by against the sons of Ammōn, and the Lord gave them in my hand. And for what have you come up against me in this day, to deploy troops against me?”

4 Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, You Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.

4 And Jephthae gathered all the men of Galaad and was fighting Ephraim, and the men of Galaad struck down Ephraim, because they said, “You are the ones who escaped from Ephraim, O Galaad in the midst of Ephraim and in the midst of Manassēs!” 4 And Jephthae united all the men of Galaad and deployed troops against Ephraim, and the men of Galaad struck down Ephraim, because they said, “You are the ones who were spared of Ephraim, O Galaad in the midst of Ephraim and in the midst of Manassēs!”

5 And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Are you an Ephraimite? If he said, No;

καὶ εἶπαν αὐτοῖς οἱ ἄνδρες Γαλαὰδ Μὴ ὑμεῖς ἐκ τοῦ Ἐφραίμ;
καὶ εἶπαν αὐτοῖς οἱ ἄνδρες Γαλαάδ· μὴ Ἐφραθίτης εἶ;
5 And the men of Galaad quickly seized the fords of the Jordan of Ephraim. And it came to be that the ones who escaped of Ephraim said, “Let us pass over,” and the men of Galaad said to them, “Are you not from Ephraim?” And they said, “We are not.” 5 And Galaad quickly seized the fords of the Jordan of Ephraim. And the ones who were spared of Ephraim said to them, “Let us cross over,” and the men of Galaad said to them, “Are you not an Ephrathite?” And he said, “No.”

6 Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he couldn’t frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites 40 and two thousand.

6 And they said to them, “Please say the password,” and they didn’t make it straight to speak thus. And they seized them and killed them at the fords of the Jordan. And 42,000 out of Ephraim fell at that time. 6 And they said to him, “Please say Head-of-Grain,” and he didn’t keep straight to speak thus. And they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. And 42,000 from Ephraim fell at that time.

7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.
