The Vision of Slaughter

1 He cried also in my ears with a loud voice, saying, Cause those who have charge over the city to draw near, even every man with his destroying weapon in his hand.

1 And he called out into my ears in a loud voice, saying, “The judgment of the city has come near,” and each had the instruments of annihilation in his hand. 1 And he called out into my ears in a loud voice, saying, “The judgment of the city has come near,” and each had the instruments of annihilation in his hand.

2 And, behold, six men came from the way of the higher gate, which lies toward the north, and every man a slaughter weapon in his hand; and one man among them was clothed with linen, with a writer’s inkhorn by his side: and they went in, and stood beside the copper-alloy altar.

2 And look! six men were coming from the way of the high gate looking north, and each had an axe in his hand, and one man in the midst of them wearing a full-length robe, and a sapphire belt was upon his loin, and they entered and stood close to the copper-alloy altar. 2 And look! six men were coming from the way of the high gate looking north, and each had an axe in his hand, and one man in the midst of them wearing a full-length robe, and a sapphire belt was upon his loin, and they entered and stood close to the copper-alloy altar.

3 And the glory of the God of Israel was gone up from the cherub, whereupon he was, to the threshold of the house. And he called to the man clothed with linen, which had the writer’s inkhorn by his side;

3 And the glory of the God of Israēl ascended from the Cherubs. It was upon them up to the atrium[1]of the house. And he summoned the man who wore the full-length robe who had the belt upon his loin. 3 And the glory of the God of Israēl ascended from the Cherubs. It was upon them up to the atrium[1]of the house. 4 And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst of it.

4 And he said to him, “Pass through the middle of Jerousalēm, and give the mark upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and have been embittered over all the lawless acts that happen in their midst.” 4 And he said to him, “Pass through the middle of Jerousalēm, and give the mark upon the foreheads of the men who sigh and have been embittered over all the lawless acts that happen in their midst.”

5 And to the others he said in my hearing, Go you after him through the city, and smite: don’t let your eye spare, neither have you pity:

5 And to these he said in my hearing, “Go after him into the city, and smite, and don’t spare with your eyes, and have no mercy; 5 And to these he said in my hearing, “Go after him into the city, and smite, and don’t spare with your eyes, and have no mercy;

6 Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but don’t come near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men who were before the house.

6 kill an older and a young man and a virgin and babies and women unto obliteration, but you shall not approach anyone upon whom is the mark, and begin from my holy places.” And they began from the men who were inside, in the house. 6 kill an older and a young man and a virgin and babies and women unto obliteration, but you shall not approach anyone upon whom is the mark, and begin from my holy places.” And they began from the men who were inside, in the house.

7 And he said unto them, Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go you forth. And they went forth, and slew in the city.

7 And he said to them, “Defile the house, and fill the roads with the dead as you go out, and smite.” 7 And he said to them, “Defile the house, and fill the roads with the dead as you go out, and smite.”

8 And it came to pass, while they were slaying them, and I was left, that I fell upon my face, and cried, and said, Ah Lord GOD! will you destroy all the residue of Israel in your pouring out of your fury upon Jerusalem?

ἐξαλείφεις σὺ τοὺς καταλοίπους τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἐν τῷ ἐκχέαι σὲ τὸν θυμόν σου ἐπὶ Ἱερουσαλήμ;
ἐξαλείφεις σὺ τοὺς καταλοίπους τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ ἐν τῷ ἐκχέαι σε τὸν θυμόν σου ἐπὶ Ἱερουσαλήμ;
8 And it happened, when they were smiting, I also fell upon my face and shouted out and said, “Woe is me, Oh Lord, are you wiping out the remainders of Israēl when you pour out your wrath upon Jerousalēm?” 8 And it happened, when they were smiting, I also fell upon my face and shouted out and said, “Woe is me, Oh Lord, are you wiping out the remainders of Israēl when you pour out your wrath upon Jerousalēm?”

9 Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness: for they say, The LORD has forsaken the earth, and the LORD sees not.

9 Then said he to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israēl and Jouda is become very, very great: because the land is filled with many peoples, and the city is filled with iniquity and uncleanness; because they have said, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord doesn’t watch.’ 9 Then said he to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israēl and Jouda is become very, very great: because the land is filled with many peoples, and the city is filled with iniquity and uncleanness; because they have said, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord doesn’t watch.’

10 And as for me also, my eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but I will recompense their way upon their head.

10 And my eye shall not spare, nor shall I have mercy; I have given their ways against their heads.” 10 And my eye shall not spare, nor shall I have mercy; I have given their ways against their heads.”

11 And, behold, the man clothed with linen, which had the inkhorn by his side, reported the matter, saying, I have done as you have commanded me.

11 And look! the man who wore the fulllength robe and girded with a belt on his loin and he answered, saying, “I have done as you commanded me.” 11 And look! the man who wore the fulllength robe and girded with a belt on his loin and he answered, saying, “I have done as you commanded me.”
