The Death of Israel

1 And Joseph fell upon his father’s face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.

2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.

3 And 40 days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those who are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him 70 days.

4 And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

4 And when the days of mourning had passed, Jōsēph spoke to the officials of Pharaō, saying, “If I have found favour before you, speak concerning me in the ears of Pharaō, saying, 4 And when the days of mourning had passed, Jōsēph spoke to the officials of Pharaō, saying, “If I have found favour before you, speak concerning me in the ears of Pharaō, saying,

5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have dug for me in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray you, and bury my father, and I will come again.

5 My father made me swear an oath, saying, ‛In the tomb which I dug for myself in Chanaan-land, there you shall bury me.’ Now then I will go up and bury my father, and I will return. 5 My father made me swear an oath, saying, ‛In the tomb which I dug for myself in Chanaan-land, there you shall bury me.’ Now then I will go up and bury my father, and I will return.

6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury your father, according as he made you swear.

6 And Pharaō said, “Go up, bury your father, as he made you to swear.” 6 And Pharaō said to Jōsēph, “Go up, bury your father, as he made you to swear.”

7 And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Aigypt,

8 And all the house of Joseph, and his brothers, and his father’s house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

8 And all the household of Jōsēph, and his brothers, and all the house of his father, and his relatives; and they left behind the sheep and the oxen in Gesem’s land. 8 And all the household of Jōsēph, and his brothers, and all the house of his father, and his relatives; and they left behind the sheep and the oxen in Gesem’s land.

9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.

9 And both chariots and horse riders went up with him; and it was a very great convoy of people. 9 And both chariots and horse riders went up with him; and it was a very great convoy of people.

10 And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very severe lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

10 And they arrived at the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they lamented him with a very great and fervent lamentation, and he made mourning for his father seven days. 10 And they arrived at the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they lamented him with a very great and fervent lamentation, and he made mourning for his father seven days.

11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Aigyptians: therefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond Jordan.

11 And the inhabitants of the land of Chanaan saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad and said, “This is a great mourning to the Aigyptians.” Therefore someone called the name of the place Mourning-of-Aigypt, which is beyond the Jordan. 11 And the inhabitants of the land of Chanaan saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad and said, “This is a great mourning to the Aigyptians.” Therefore someone called the name of the place Mourning-of-Aigypt, which is beyond the Jordan.

Burial at Machpelah

12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:

13 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a burial place of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brothers, and all who went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

14 And Jōsēph returned to Aigypt, he and his brothers, and those who had gone up together to bury his father. 14 And Jōsēph returned to Aigypt, he and his brothers, and those who had gone up together to bury his father.

15 And when Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will perhaps hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

15 But after Jōsēph’s brothers saw that their father had died, they said, “Perhaps Jōsēph may bear a grudge against us and pay back a payback on us for all the evil things that we demonstrated to him.” 15 But after Jōsēph’s brothers saw that their father had died, they said, “Perhaps Jōsēph may bear a grudge against us and pay back a payback on us for all the evil things that we demonstrated to him.”

16 And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Your father commanded before he died, saying,

16 And they came to Jōsēph, saying, “Before his death, your father made us swear us, saying, 16 And they came to Jōsēph, saying, “Before his death, your father made us swear us, saying,

17 So shall you say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray you now, the trespass of your brothers, and their sin; for they did unto you evil: and now, we pray you, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father. And Joseph wept when they spoke unto him.

17 ‛Say thus to Jōsēph: “Forgive them their injustice and sin, that they demonstrated wicked things to you. And now accept the injustice of the attendants of the God of your father.’ ” And while they were speaking to him, Jōsēph wept.

18 And his brothers also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we are your servants.

18 And after they came to him, they said, “These we are, your household servants.” 18 And after they came to him, they said, “These we are, your household servants.”

19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

19 And Jōsēph said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for I am God’s. 19 And Jōsēph said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for I am God’s.

21 And he said to them, “Don’t be afraid; I will support you and your households.” And he comforted them and spoke to their heart. 21 And he said to them, “Don’t be afraid; I will support you and your households.” And he comforted them and spoke to their heart.

Death of Joseph

22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father’s house: and Joseph lived 110 years.

23 And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph’s knees.

23 And Jōsēph saw the children of Ephraim to the third generation; and the sons of Machir the son of Manassē were born on the thighs of Jōsēph. 23 And Jōsēph saw the children of Ephraim to the third generation; and the sons of Machir the son of Manassē were born on the thighs of Jōsēph.

24 And Joseph said unto his brothers, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

24 And Jōsēph spoke to his brothers, saying, “I am dying, and God will visit you by a visit, and will bring you out of this land into the land that God swore to our fathers, Habraam, Isaak, and Jakōb.” 24 And Jōsēph spoke to his brothers, saying, “I am dying, and God will visit you by a visit, and will bring you out of this land into the land that God swore to our fathers, Habraam, Isaak, and Jakōb.”

25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from hence.

25 And Jōsēph made the sons of Israēl swear, saying, “At the visitation with which God shall visit you, then you shall carry up my bones from here with you.” 25 And Jōsēph made the sons of Israēl swear, saying, “At the visitation with which God shall visit you, then you shall carry up my bones from here with you.”

26 So Joseph died, being 110 years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

26 And Jōsēph died, aged 110 years; and they entombed him, and put him in a coffin in Aigypt. 26 And Jōsēph died, aged 110 years; and they entombed him, and put him in a coffin in Aigypt.
