Chapter 9

NASTextRec
As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.
9:2 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες, ῥαββί, τίς ἥμαρτεν, οὗτος οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ, ἵνα τυφλὸς γεννηθῇ; 2 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες, ῥαββί, τίς ἥμαρτεν, οὗτος οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ, ἵνα τυφλὸς γεννηθῇ;
And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be revealed in him. Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be revealed in him.
We must work the works of him who sent me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one is able to work. We must work the works of him who sent me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one is able to work.
While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.”
When he had said these thing, he spat on the ground, and made mud of the spittle, and applied the mud to his eyes, When he had said these thing, he spat on the ground, and made mud of the spittle, and applied the mud to the eyes of the blind man,
and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Silōam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing. and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Silōam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.
9:8 Οἱ οὖν γείτονες καὶ οἱ θεωροῦντες αὐτὸν τὸ πρότερον ὅτι προσαίτης ἦν ἔλεγον, οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν, καθήμενος καὶ προσαιτῶν; 8 Οἱ οὖν γείτονες καὶ οἱ θεωροῦντες αὐτὸν τὸ πρότερον ὅτι τυφλὸς ἦν, ἔλεγον, οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν καθήμενος καὶ προσαιτῶν;
Then the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, “Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?” Then the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, “Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?”
Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” he kept saying, “I am he.” Others were saying, “This is he,” still others were saying, “No, but he is like him.” he kept saying, “I am he.”
9:10 ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ, πῶς [οὖν] ἠνεῴχθησάν σου οἱ ὀφθαλμοί; 10 ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ, πῶς ἀνεῴχθησάν σου οἱ ὀφθαλμοί;
Then they were saying to him, “How [then] were your eyes opened?” Then they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?”
He answered, “The man who is called Jesus made mud, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Silōam and wash’; then after going away and washing, I received sight.” He answered and said, “The man who is called Jesus made mud, and anointed my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to the pool Silōam and wash’; then after going away and washing, I received sight.”
9:12 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος;
12 εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ, ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος;
They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don’t know.” They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I don’t know.”
They brought to the Pharisees the man who was previously blind. They brought to the Pharisees the man who was previously blind.
Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. Now it was a Sabbath on the day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.
Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied mud to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, “He applied mud to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
ἄλλοι [δὲ] ἔλεγον, πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν;
ἄλλοι ἔλεγον, πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν;
Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And there was a division among them. Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And there was a division among them.
9:17 λέγουσιν οὖν τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν, τί σὺ λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἠνέῳξεν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς;
17 λέγουσι τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν, σὺ τί λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἤνοιξέ σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς;
So they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.” So they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”
The Jews then didn’t believe concerning him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight, The Jews then didn’t believe concerning him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight,
9:19 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες, οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς ὑμῶν, ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη;
πῶς οὖν βλέπει ἄρτι;
19 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες, οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς ὑμῶν, ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη;
πῶς οὖν ἄρτι βλέπει;
and questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?” and questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?”
His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
but how he now sees, we don’t know; or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.” but how he now sees, we don’t know; or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.”
His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue. His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.
For this reason his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” For this reason his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
Then a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, “Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.” Then a second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, “Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.”
He then answered, “Whether he is a sinner, I don’t know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” He then answered, “Whether he is a sinner, I don’t know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.”
9:26 εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ, τί ἐποίησέν σοι;
πῶς ἤνοιξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς;
26 εἶπον δὲ αὐτῷ πάλιν, τί ἐποίησέ σοι;
πῶς ἤνοιξέ σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς;
Then they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” Then they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν;
μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι;
τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν;
μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι;
He answered them, “I told you already and you didn’t listen; why do you want to hear it again? you don’t want to become his disciples too, do you?” He answered them, “I told you already and you didn’t listen; why do you want to hear it again? you don’t want to become his disciples too, do you?”
They scolded him and said, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Mōses. They scolded him and said, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Mōses.
We know that God has spoken to Mōses, but as for this man, we don’t know where he is from.” We know that God has spoken to Mōses, but as for this man, we don’t know where he is from.”
The man answered and said to them, “For in this it is amazing that you don’t know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes. The man answered and said to them, “For in this it is amazing that you don’t know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes.
We know that God doesn’t hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he hears him. We know that God doesn’t hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he hears him.
Since from eternity it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. Since from eternity it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.
If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything.” If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything.”
9:34 ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω. 34 ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος, καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς;
They answered and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?” So they put him out. They answered and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you teaching us?” So they put him out.
καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτόν, εἶπεν αὐτῷ, σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ;
Jesus heard that they threw him outside, and finding him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” Jesus heard that they threw him outside, and finding him, he said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”
9:36 ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν, καὶ τίς ἐστιν, κύριε, ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν; 36 ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπε, τίς ἐστι, κύριε, ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν;
He answered and said, “Who is he, Sir, that I may believe in him?” He answered and said, “Who is he, Sir, that I may believe in him?”
Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and he is the one who is talking with you.” Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and he is the one who is talking with you.”
And he said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshipped him. And he said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshipped him.
And Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who don’t see may see, and that those who see may become blind.” And Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who don’t see may see, and that those who see may become blind.”
9:40 ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα οἱ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ ὄντες καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν; 40 καὶ ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα οἱ ὄντες μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν;
Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and said to him, “We are not blind also, are we?” Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and said to him, “We are not blind also, are we?”
Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains. Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.
