Israel’s Unfaithfulness Condemned

1 Say you unto your brothers, Ammi; and to your sisters, Ru-hamah.

1 Say to your brother, My People, and to your sister, Mercy. 1 Say to your brother, My People, and to your sister, Mercy.

2 Plead with your mother, plead: for she is not my wife, neither am I her husband: let her therefore put away her prostitutions out of her sight, and her adulteries from between her breasts;

2 Petition against your mother, petition, because she is not my wife, and I am not her husband; and I will put away her prostitution from before me and her adultery from between her breasts, 2 Petition against your mother, petition, because she is not my wife, and I am not her husband; and I will put away her prostitution from before me and her adultery from between her breasts,

3 Lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst.

3 so that I might strip her naked and restore her just as the day of her birth, and I will make her like a wilderness and appoint her as a dry land and kill her with thirst. 3 so that I might strip her naked and restore her just as the day of her birth, and I will make her like a wilderness and appoint her as a dry land and kill her with thirst.

4 And I won’t have mercy upon her children; for they be the children of prostitutions.

4 And upon her children I won’t have mercy, because they are children of prostitution. 4 And upon her children I won’t have mercy, because they are children of prostitution.

5 For their mother has played the prostitute: she who conceived them has done shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.

5 Because their mother engaged in prostitution; she who gave them birth was acting disgracefully. For she said, “I will follow after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water and my clothes and my linen clothes and my olive oil and all the things appropriate for me.” 5 Because their mother engaged in prostitution; she who gave them birth was acting disgracefully. Because she said, “I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water and my clothes and my linen clothes and my olive oil and all the things appropriate for me.”

6 Therefore, behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns, and make a wall, that she shall not find her paths.

6 Therefore, look! I am blocking her way with thorns and will barricade her ways, and she will not find her path. 6 Therefore, look! I am blocking her way with thorns and will barricade the ways, and she will not find her path.

7 And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.

7 And she shall pursue her lovers and not overtake them, and she shall seek them and shall not find them. And she shall say, “I will go and return to my former husband, because it was well with me then rather than now.” 7 And she shall pursue her lovers and not overtake them, and she shall seek them and shall not find them. And she shall say, “I will go and return to my former husband, because it was well with me then rather than now.”

8 For she didn’t know that I gave her grain, and wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they prepared for Baal.

8 And she didn’t know that I had given her the grain and the wine and the olive oil and had multiplied silver money for her. But she made the silver and the gold for the goddess Baal. 8 And she didn’t know that I gave her the grain and the wine and the olive oil and had multiplied silver money for her. But she made the silver and the gold for the goddess Baal.

9 Therefore will I return, and take away my grain in the time of it, and my wine in the season of it, and will recover my wool and my flax given to cover her nakedness.

10 And now will I discover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and none shall deliver her out of my hand.

11 I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts.

12 And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, of which she has said, These are my rewards that my lovers have given me: and I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them.

12 And I will annihilate her grapevine and her fig trees of which she said, “These are my wages, which my lovers have given to me.” And I will make them a witness, and the wild beasts of the field and the birds of the sky and the creeping animals on the earth shall devour them. 12 And I will annihilate her grapevine and her fig trees of which she said, “These are my wages, which my lovers have given to me.” And I will make them a witness, and the wild beasts of the field and the birds of the sky and the creeping animals on the earth shall devour them.

13 And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, in which she burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgot me, says the LORD.

Restoration of Israel

14 Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her.

14 Therefore, look! I will mislead her and put her into the wilderness and speak to her heart. 14 Therefore, look! I will mislead her and put her into the wilderness and speak to her heart.

15 And I will give her her vineyards from there, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

15 And to her, I will give her possessions from there and the valley of Achōr, to open up her understanding. And there she will be humbled as in the days of her infancy and as in the days of her coming up out of the land of Aigypt. 15 And to her, I will give her possessions from there and the valley of Achōr, to open up her understanding. And there she will be humbled as in the days of her infancy and as in the days of her coming up out of the land of Aigypt.

16 And it shall be at that day, says the LORD, that you shall call me Ishi; and shall call me no more Baali.

16 And it shall be on that day, says the Lord, she will call me “My husband” and no longer call me “Baalim.” 16 And it shall be on that day, says the Lord, she will call me “My husband” and no longer call me “Baaleim.”

17 For I will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name.

17 And I will remove the names of the Baalim from her mouth, and their names will be remembered no more. 17 And I will remove the names of the Baaleim from her mouth, and their names will be remembered no more.

18 And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.

18 And I will make a covenant with them on that day, a covenant with the animals of the field and with the birds of the sky and with the creeping animals of the ground, and I will break bow and sword and war from the land, and I will make you dwell in confidence. 18 And I will make a covenant with them on that day, a covenant with the animals of the field and with the birds of the sky and the creeping animals of the ground, and I will break bow and sword and war from the land, and I will make you dwell in confidence.

19 And I will betroth you unto me forever; yes, I will betroth you unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies.

19 And I will betroth you to myself forever, and I will betroth you to myself in righteousness and in judgment and in mercy and in compassion. 19 And I will betroth you to myself forever, and I will betroth you in righteousness and in judgment and in mercy and in compassion.

20 I will even betroth you unto me in faithfulness: and you shall know the LORD.

20 And I will betroth you to myself in faithfulness, and you shall know the Lord. 20 and I will betroth you to myself in faithfulness: and you shall know the Lord.

21 And it shall come to pass in that day, I will hear, says the LORD, I will hear the heavens, and they shall hear the earth;
