I Kings

Chapter 5

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.

2 And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,

2 And Salōmōn sent to Chiram, saying, 2 And Salōmōn sent to Chiram, saying,

3 You know how that David my father couldn’t build a house unto the name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet.

4 But now the LORD my God has given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent.

4 And now the Lord my God has given me rest round about; there is no one plotting against me, and there is no evil trespass against me. 4 And now the Lord my God has given me rest round about; there is no one plotting against me, and there is no evil trespass against me.

5 And, behold, I purpose to build a house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spoke unto David my father, saying, Your son, whom I will set upon your throne in your room, he shall build a house unto my name.

5 And, behold, I intend to build a house to the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord God spoke to my father David, saying, ‛Your son whom I will set on your throne in your place, he shall build a house to my name.’ 5 And, behold, I intend to build a house to the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord God spoke to my father David, saying, ‛Your son whom I will set on your throne in your place, he shall build a house to my name.’

6 Now therefore command that they cut for me cedar trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with your servants: and unto you will I give hire for your servants according to all that you shall appoint: for you know that there is not among us any that can skill to cut timber like the Sidonians.

6 And now command, and let men cut wood for me out of Libanon: and, behold, my servants shall be with your servants, and I will give you the wages of your service, according to all that you shall say, because you know that we have no one skilled in cutting timber like the Sidōnians.” 6 And now command, and let men cut wood for me out of Libanon: and, behold, my servants shall be with your servants, and I will give you the wages of your service, according to all that you shall say, because you know that we have no one skilled in cutting timber like the Sidōnians.”

7 And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the LORD this day, which has given unto David a wise son over this great people.

7 And it happened, as soon as Chiram heard the words of Salōmōn, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, “Blessed be God today, who has given to David a wise son over this numerous people.” 7 And it happened as soon as Chiram heard the words of Salōmōn, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, “Blessed be God today, who has given to David a wise son over this numerous people.”

8 And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the things which you sent to me for: and I will do all your desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.

8 And he sent to Salōmōn, saying, “I have listened concerning all that you have sent to me for: I will do all your will: as for timber of cedar and fir, 8 And he sent to Salōmōn, saying, “I have listened concerning all that you have sent to me for: I will do all your will: as for timber of cedar and fir,

9 My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that you shall appoint me, and will cause them to be discharged there, and you shall receive them: and you shall accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.

9 my servants shall bring them down from Libanon to the sea: I will form them into rafts, and bring them to the place which you shall send to me about; and I will land them there, and you shall take them up: and you shall do my will, in giving bread to my household.” 9 my servants shall bring them down from Libanon to the sea: I will form them into rafts, and bring them to the place which you shall send to me about; and I will land them there, and you shall take them up: and you shall do my will, in giving bread to my household.”

10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees and fir trees according to all his desire.

10 So Chiram gave to Salōmōn cedars, and fir trees, and all his desire. 10 So Chiram gave to Salōmōn cedars, and fir trees, and all his desire.

11 And Solomon gave Hiram 20,000 measures of wheat for food to his household, and 20 measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.

12 And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and those two made a league together.

12 And the Lord gave wisdom to Salōmōn as he promised him; and there was peace between Chiram and Salōmōn, and they made a covenant between them. 12 And the Lord gave wisdom to Salōmōn as he promised him; and there was peace between Chiram and Salōmōn, and they made a covenant between them.

Conscription of Laborers

13 And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israēl; and the levy was 30,000 men.

14 And he sent them to Lebanon 10,000 a month by courses: a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home: and Adoniram was over the levy.
