Abijam Reigns over Judah

1 Now in the 18th year of king Jeroboam the son of Nebat reigned Abijam over Judah.

2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom.

2 And he reigned three years: and his mother’s name was Maacha, daughter of Abessalōm. 2 And he reigned three years over Jerousalēm: and his mother’s name was Maacha, daughter of Abessalōm.

3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart wasn’t perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.

4 Nevertheless for David’s sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:

4 However for David’s sake the Lord gave him a remnant, that he might establish his children after him, and might establish Jerousalēm. 4 However for David’s sake the Lord gave him a remnant, that he might establish his children after him, and might establish Jerousalēm.

5 Because David did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, and didn’t turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

5 As David did what was right in the sight of the Lord: he didn’t turn from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life. 5 As David did what was right in the sight of the Lord: he didn’t turn from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life.

6 And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.

6 N/A 6 N/A

7 Now the rest of the acts of Abijam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And there was war between Abijam and Jeroboam.

6 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ἀβιοὺ καὶ πάντα, ἐποίησεν, οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰούδα;
6 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ἀβιοὺ τὰ πάντας, ἐποίησεν, οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰούδα;
And the rest of the history of Abiou, and all that he did, behold, are not these written in the book of the histories of the days in the kings of Jouda? And there was war between Abiou and Jeroboam. And the rest of the history of Abiou, and all that he did, behold, are not these written in the book of the histories of the days in the kings of Jouda? And there was war between Abiou and Jeroboam.

Asa Succeeds Abijam

8 And Abijam slept with his fathers; and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead.

9 And in the 20th year of Jeroboam king of Israēl reigned Asa over Judah.

10 And he reigned 41 years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom.

11 And Asa did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did David his father.

11 And Asa did what was right in the sight of the Lord, as David his father. 11 And Asa did what was right in the sight of the Lord, as David his father.

12 And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.

12 And he removed the pagan rituals out of the land, and abolished all the practices which his fathers did. 12 And he removed the pagan rituals out of the land, and abolished all the practices which his fathers did.

13 And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burned it by the brook Kidron.

14 But the high places were not removed: nevertheless Asa’s heart was perfect with the LORD all his days.

14 But he didn’t remove the high places; nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect with the Lord all his days. 14 But he didn’t remove the high places; nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect with the Lord all his days.

15 And he brought in the things which his father had dedicated, and the things which he had dedicated, into the house of the LORD — silver, and gold, and vessels.

15 And he brought in the pillars of his father, and brought his pillars into the house of the Lord — silver, gold, and furniture. 15 And he brought in the pillars of his father, and brought his pillars into the house of the Lord — silver, gold, and furniture.

16 And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israēl all their days.

17 And Baasha king of Israēl went up against Judah, and built Ramah, that he might not suffer any to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah.

18 Then Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king Asa sent them to Ben-hadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, who dwelt at Damascus, saying,

18 And Asa took all the silver and the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the king, and gave them into the hands of his servants; and king Asa sent them out to the son of Ader, the son of Taberemman son of Azin king of Syria, who dwelt in Damascus, saying, 18 And Asa took all the silver and the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and gave them into the hands of his servants; and king Asa sent them out to the son of Ader, the son of Taberemman son of Azin king of Syria, who dwelt in Damascus, saying,

19 There is a league between me and you, and between my father and your father: behold, I have sent unto you a present of silver and gold; come and break your league with Baasha king of Israēl, that he may depart from me.

20 So Ben-hadad listened unto king Asa, and sent the captains of the armies which he had against the cities of Israēl, and smote Ijon, and Dan, and Abel-beth-maachah, and all Cinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali.

21 And it came to pass, when Baasha heard of it, that he left off building of Ramah, and dwelt in Tirzah.

22 Then king Asa made a proclamation throughout all Judah; none was exempted: and they took away the stones of Ramah, and the timber of it, with which Baasha had built; and king Asa built with them Geba of Benjamin, and Mizpah.

22 And king Asa charged all Jouda without exception:[1] and they took up the stones of Rhama and its timbers with which Baasa was building; and with them, king Asa built the whole hill of Benjamin, and the watchtower. 22 And king Asa charged all Jouda without exception: [1] and they took up the stones of Rhama and its timbers with which Baasa was building; and with them, king Asa built the whole hill of Benjamin, and the watchtower.

Jehoshaphat Succeeds Asa

23 The rest of all the acts of Asa, and all his might, and all that he did, and the cities which he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? Nevertheless in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet.

23 And the rest of the history of Asa, and all his mighty deeds which he did, look, are these not written in the book of the history of the days of the kings of Jouda? Nevertheless in the time of his old age he suffered in his feet. 23 And the rest of the history of Asa, and all his mighty deeds which he did, and the cities which he built, look, are these not written in the book of the history of the days of the kings of Jouda? Nevertheless in the time of his old age he suffered in his feet.

24 And Asa slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead.

Nadab, then Baasha, Rules over Israēl

25 And Nadab the son of Jeroboam began to reign over Israēl in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned over Israēl two years.

26 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin with which he made Israēl to sin.

26 And he did the evil thing [2]in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sins in which he caused Israēl to sin. 26 And he did the evil thing [2]in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sins in which he caused Israēl to sin.

27 And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him; and Baasha struck him at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines; for Nadab and all Israēl laid siege to Gibbethon.

27 And Baasa son of Achia, who was over the house of Belaan, sieged him and struck him in Gabathōn of the foreigners; both Nabat and all Israēl were laying siege upon Gabathōn. 27 And Baasa son of Achia, who was over the house of Belaan, sieged him and struck him in Gabathōn of the foreigners; both Nabat and all Israēl were laying siege upon Gabathōn.

28 Even in the third year of Asa king of Judah did Baasha slay him, and reigned after him.

29 And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he smote all the house of Jeroboam; he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the LORD, which he spoke by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite:

29 And it happened when he reigned, that he struck the house of Jeroboam, and left none that breathed of Jeroboam, until he has destroyed him utterly, according to the word of the Lord which he spoke by the hand of his servant Achia the Sēlōnite, 29 And it happened when he reigned, that he struck the whole house of Jeroboam, and left none that breathed of Jeroboam, until he has destroyed him utterly, according to the word of the Lord which he spoke by the hand of his servant Achia the Sēlōnite,

30 for the sins of Jeroboam, who led Israēl into sin, even by his provocation with which he provoked the Lord God of Israēl. 30 for the sins of Jeroboam, who led Israēl into sin, even by his provocation with which he provoked the Lord God of Israēl.

31 Now the rest of the acts of Nadab, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israēl?

War with Judah

32 And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israēl all their days.

33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah began Baasha the son of Ahijah to reign over all Israēl in Tirzah, 24 years.

33 And in the third year of Asa king of Jouda, Baasa the son of Achia begins to reign over Israēl in Thersa, 24 years. 33 And in the third year of Asa king of Jouda, Baasa the son of Achia begins to reign over Israēl in Thersa, 24 years.

34 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin with which he made Israēl to sin.

34 And he did the evil thing [2]in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nabat, and in his sins, as he caused Israēl to sin. 34 And he did the evil thing [2]in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nabat, and in his sins, as he caused Israēl to sin.

[1]εἰς Αἰνακίμ "without exception" is a transliteration of the Hebrew; but it could also be "up to Ainakim" (the town).

[2]some translate it as "what was evil"; but literally it is "the evil," a generic term for abandoning God and worshipping other gods.
