For you yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain, | For yourselves, brothers, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain: |
but after we had already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much opposition. | But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as you know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention. |
For our exhortation doesn’t come from error or impurity or by way of deceit; | For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: |
but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who examines our hearts. | But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. |
For we never came with flattering speech, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness— | For neither at any time used we flattering words, as you know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness: |
nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, even though as apostles of Christ we might have asserted our authority. | Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. |
ἐν
ὡς
But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children. | But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: |
Having so fond an affection for you, we were well-pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become very dear to us. | So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because you were dear unto us. |
γάρ,
τὸν
καὶ
τὸν
For you recall, brothers, our labour and hardship, how working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. | For you remember, brothers, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God. |
You are witnesses, and so is God, how virtuously and righteously and blamelessly we behaved toward you believers; | You are witnesses, and God also, how virtuously and righteously and blamelessly we behaved ourselves among you that believe: |
just as you know how we were exhorting and encouraging and imploring each one of you as a father would his own children, | As you know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father does his children, |
so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. | That you would walk worthy of God, who has called you unto his kingdom and glory. |
For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe. | For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when you received the word of God which you heard of us, you received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. |
For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews, | For you, brothers, became followers of the churches of God which in Judea are in Christ Jesus: for you also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: |
who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out. They are not pleasing to God, but hostile to all men, | Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: |

hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved; with the result that they always fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them to the utmost. | Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. |
But we, brothers, having been taken away from you for a short while—in person, not in spirit—were all the more eager with great desire to see your face. | But we, brothers, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire. |
For we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, more than once—and yet Satan hindered us. | Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us. |

For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation? Is it not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at his coming? | For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? |
For you are our glory and joy. | For you are our glory and joy. |
