Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; | Be you therefore followers of God, as dear children; |
and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma. | And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us, and has given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. |
But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; | But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; |
and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. | Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. |
For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. | For this you know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. |
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. | Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things comes the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. |
Therefore don’t be partakers with them; | Be not you therefore partakers with them. |
5:8 ἦτε
γάρ
νῦν
δὲ
φῶς
ἐν
for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light | For you were sometimes darkness, but now are you light in the Lord: walk as children of light: |
9 ὁ
γὰρ
τοῦ
ἐν
καὶ
καὶ
(for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), | (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) |
trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. | Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. |
Don’t participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; | And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. |
for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. | For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. |
But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. | But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever does make manifest is light. |
5:14 πᾶν
γὰρ
τὸ
φῶς
For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.” | Wherefore he says, Awake you that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light. |
Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, | See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, |
making the most of your time, because the days are evil. | Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. |
So then don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. | Wherefore be you not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. |
And don’t get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, | And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; |
speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; | Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; |
always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; | Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; |
and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. | Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. |
Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. | Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. |
For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, he himself being the Saviour of the body. | For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. |
But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. | Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. |
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself up for her, | Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; |
so that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, | That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, |
that he might present to himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. | That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. |
[καὶ]
οἱ
τὰς
ὡς
τὰ
So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. he who loves his own wife loves himself; | So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. he that loveth his wife loveth himself. |
for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, | For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: |
because we are members of his body. | For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. |
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. | For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. |
5:32 τὸ
This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. | This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. |
Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband. | Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband. |
