Joshua Assumes Command

1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into a prostitute’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח יְהֹושֻׁ֣עַ־בִּן־נ֠וּן מִֽן־הַשִּׁטִּ֞ים שְׁנַֽיִם־אֲנָשִׁ֤ים מְרַגְּלִים֙ חֶ֣רֶשׁ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְכ֛וּ רְא֥וּ אֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ וְאֶת־יְרִיחֹ֑ו וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ וַ֠יָּבֹאוּ בֵּית־אִשָּׁ֥ה זֹונָ֛ה וּשְׁמָ֥הּ רָחָ֖ב וַיִּשְׁכְּבוּ־שָֽׁמָּה׃

1 Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἰησοῦς υἱὸς Ναυὴ ἐκ Σαττὶν δύο νεανίσκους κατασκοπεῦσαι λέγων Ἀνάβητε καὶ ἴδετε τὴν γῆν καὶ τὴν Ἰεριχώ.
καὶ πορευθέντες εἰσήλθοσαν οἱ δύο νεανίσκοι εἰς Ἰεριχὼ καὶ εἰσήλθοσαν εἰς οἰκίαν γυναικὸς πόρνης, ὄνομα Ῥαάβ, καὶ κατέλυσαν ἐκεῖ.

וַיֵּ֣אָמַ֔ר לְמֶ֥לֶךְ יְרִיחֹ֖ו לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֣ה אֲ֠נָשִׁים בָּ֣אוּ הֵ֧נָּה הַלַּ֛יְלָה מִבְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לַחְפֹּ֥ר אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

2 καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ βασιλεῖ Ἰεριχὼ λέγοντες Εἰσπεπόρευνται ὧδε ἄνδρες τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ κατασκοπεῦσαι τὴν γῆν. 2 καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ βασιλεῖ Ἱεριχὼ λέγοντες· εἰσπεπόρευνται ὧδε ἄνδρες τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ κατασκοπεῦσαι τὴν γῆν.

וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְרִיחֹ֔ו אֶל־רָחָ֖ב לֵאמֹ֑ר הֹ֠וצִיאִי הָאֲנָשִׁ֨ים הַבָּאִ֤ים אֵלַ֙יִךְ֙ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֣אוּ לְבֵיתֵ֔ךְ כִּ֛י לַחְפֹּ֥ר אֶת־כָּל־הָאָ֖רֶץ בָּֽאוּ׃


4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I didn’t know where they were from;

וַתִּקַּ֧ח הָֽאִשָּׁ֛ה אֶת־שְׁנֵ֥י הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים וַֽתִּצְפְּנֹ֑ו וַתֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ כֵּ֗ן בָּ֤אוּ אֵלַי֙ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים וְלֹ֥א יָדַ֖עְתִּי מֵאַ֥יִן הֵֽמָּה׃

5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; to which the men went I don’t know; pursue after them quickly; for you shall overtake them.

וַיְהִ֨י הַשַּׁ֜עַר לִסְגֹּ֗ור בַּחֹ֙שֶׁךְ֙ וְהָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים יָצָ֔אוּ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי אָ֥נָה הָלְכ֖וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֑ים רִדְפ֥וּ מַהֵ֛ר אַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם כִּ֥י תַשִּׂיגֽוּם׃

5 ὡς δὲ πύλη ἐκλείετο ἐν τῷ σκότει, καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες ἐξῆλθον· οὐκ ἐπίσταμαι ποῦ πεπόρευνται· καταδιώξατε ὀπίσω αὐτῶν, εἰ καταλήμψεσθε αὐτούς. 5 ὡς δὲ πύλη ἐκλείετο ἐν τῷ σκότει, καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες ἐξῆλθον, οὐκ ἐπίσταμαι ποῦ πεπόρευνται· καταδιώξατε ὀπίσω αὐτῶν, εἰ καταλήψεσθε αὐτούς.

6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

וְהִ֖יא הֶעֱלָ֣תַם הַגָּ֑גָה וַֽתִּטְמְנֵם֙ בְּפִשְׁתֵּ֣י הָעֵ֔ץ הָעֲרֻכֹ֥ות לָ֖הּ עַל־הַגָּֽג׃


7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords; and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

וְהָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים רָדְפ֤וּ אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן עַ֖ל הַֽמַּעְבְּרֹ֑ות וְהַשַּׁ֣עַר סָגָ֔רוּ אַחֲרֵ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יָצְא֥וּ הָרֹדְפִ֖ים אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃


8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;

וְהֵ֖מָּה טֶ֣רֶם יִשְׁכָּב֑וּן וְהִ֛יא עָלְתָ֥ה עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם עַל־הַגָּֽג׃

9 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־הָ֣אֲנָשִׁ֔ים יָדַ֕עְתִּי כִּֽי־נָתַ֧ן יְהוָ֛ה לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ וְכִֽי־נָפְלָ֤ה אֵֽימַתְכֶם֙ עָלֵ֔ינוּ וְכִ֥י נָמֹ֛גוּ כָּל־יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפְּנֵיכֶֽם׃

9 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἐπίσταμαι ὅτι δέδωκεν ὑμῖν κύριος τὴν γῆν, ἐπιπέπτωκεν γὰρ φόβος ὑμῶν ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς· 9 καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· ἐπίσταμαι ὅτι ἔδωκεν ὑμῖν Κύριος τὴν γῆν, ἐπιπέπτωκε γὰρ φόβος ὑμῶν ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς·

10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed.

כִּ֣י שָׁמַ֗עְנוּ אֵ֠ת אֲשֶׁר־הֹובִ֨ישׁ יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־מֵ֤י יַם־סוּף֙ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם בְּצֵאתְכֶ֖ם מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וַאֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֡ם לִשְׁנֵי֩ מַלְכֵ֨י הָאֱמֹרִ֜י אֲשֶׁ֨ר בְּעֵ֤בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן֙ לְסִיחֹ֣ן וּלְעֹ֔וג אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֶחֱרַמְתֶּ֖ם אֹותָֽם׃

10 ἀκηκόαμεν γὰρ ὅτι κατεξήρανεν κύριος θεὸς τὴν ἐρυθρὰν θάλασσαν ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν, ὅτε ἐξεπορεύεσθε ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ὅσα ἐποίησεν τοῖς δυσὶ βασιλεῦσιν τῶν Ἀμορραίων, οἳ ἦσαν πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, τῷ Σηὼν καὶ Ὢγ, οὓς ἐξωλεθρεύσατε αὐτούς· 10 ἀκηκόαμεν γὰρ ὅτι κατεξήρανε Κύριος Θεὸς τὴν ἐρυθρὰν θάλασσαν ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν, ὅτε ἐξεπορεύεσθε ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ὅσα ἐποίησε τοῖς δυσὶ βασιλεῦσι τῶν Ἀμορραίων, οἳ ἦσαν πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, τῷ Σηὼν καὶ Ὤγ, οὓς ἐξωλοθρεύσατε αὐτούς.

11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you; for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

וַנִּשְׁמַע֙ וַיִּמַּ֣ס לְבָבֵ֔נוּ וְלֹא־קָ֨מָה עֹ֥וד ר֛וּחַ בְּאִ֖ישׁ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם ה֤וּא אֱלֹהִים֙ בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם מִמַּ֔עַל וְעַל־הָאָ֖רֶץ מִתָּֽחַת׃

11 καὶ ἀκούσαντες ἡμεῖς ἐξέστημεν τῇ καρδίᾳ ἡμῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἔστη ἔτι πνεῦμα ἐν οὐδενὶ ἡμῶν ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν, ὅτι κύριος θεὸς ὑμῶν θεὸς ἐν οὐρανῷ ἄνω καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς κάτω. 11 καὶ ἀκούσαντες ἡμεῖς ἐξέστημεν τῇ καρδίᾳ ἡμῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἔστη ἔτι πνεῦμα ἐν οὐδενὶ ἡμῶν ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν, ὅτι Κύριος Θεὸς ὑμῶν Θεὸς ἐν οὐρανῷ ἄνω καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς κάτω.

12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shown you kindness, that you will also show kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token;

וְעַתָּ֗ה הִשָּֽׁבְעוּ־נָ֥א לִי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה כִּי־עָשִׂ֥יתִי עִמָּכֶ֖ם חָ֑סֶד וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֨ם גַּם־אַתֶּ֜ם עִם־בֵּ֤ית אָבִי֙ חֶ֔סֶד וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם לִ֖י אֹ֥ות אֱמֶֽת׃

12 καὶ νῦν ὀμόσατέ μοι κύριον τὸν θεόν, ὅτι ποιῶ ὑμῖν ἔλεος καὶ ποιήσετε καὶ ὑμεῖς ἔλεος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρός μου 12 καὶ νῦν ὀμόσατέ μοι Κύριον τὸν Θεόν, ὅτι ποιῶ ὑμῖν ἔλεος καὶ ποιήσατε καὶ ὑμεῖς ἔλεος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρός μου
12 And now solemnly promise to me by the Lord God that I am providing mercy to you, that you also provide mercy to the house of my father; 12 And now solemnly promise to me by the Lord God that I am providing mercy to you, that you also provide mercy to the house of my father;

13 And that you will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

וְהַחֲיִתֶ֞ם אֶת־אָבִ֣י וְאֶת־אִמִּ֗י וְאֶת־אַחַי֙ וְאֶת־ וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם וְהִצַּלְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־נַפְשֹׁתֵ֖ינוּ מִמָּֽוֶת׃


14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if you utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD has given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.

וַיֹּ֧אמְרוּ לָ֣הּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים נַפְשֵׁ֤נוּ תַחְתֵּיכֶם֙ לָמ֔וּת אִ֚ם לֹ֣א תַגִּ֔ידוּ אֶת־דְּבָרֵ֖נוּ זֶ֑ה וְהָיָ֗ה בְּתֵת־יְהוָ֥ה לָ֙נוּ֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ וְעָשִׂ֥ינוּ עִמָּ֖ךְ חֶ֥סֶד וֶאֱמֶֽת׃

14 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῇ οἱ ἄνδρες ψυχὴ ἡμῶν ἀνθ’ ὑμῶν εἰς θάνατον.
καὶ αὐτὴ εἶπεν Ὡς ἄν παραδῷ κύριος ὑμῖν τὴν πόλιν, ποιήσετε εἰς ἐμὲ ἔλεος καὶ ἀλήθειαν.
14 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῇ οἱ ἄνδρες· ψυχὴ ἡμῶν ἀνθ’ ὑμῶν εἰς θάνατον.
καὶ αὐτὴ εἶπε· ὡς ἄν παραδῷ Κύριος ὑμῖν τὴν πόλιν, ποιήσετε εἰς ἐμὲ ἔλεος καὶ ἀλήθειαν.
14 And the men said to her, “Our life for yours unto death.” And she said, “When the Lord hands the city over to you, you shall provide unto me mercy and truth.” 14 And the men said to her, “Our life for yours unto death.” And she said, “When the Lord hands the city over to you, you shall provide unto me mercy and truth.”

The Promise to Rahab

15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

וַתֹּורִדֵ֥ם בַּחֶ֖בֶל בְּעַ֣ד הַֽחַלֹּ֑ון כִּ֤י בֵיתָהּ֙ בְּקִ֣יר הַֽחֹומָ֔ה וּבַֽחֹומָ֖ה הִ֥יא יֹושָֽׁבֶת׃

15 καὶ κατεχάλασεν αὐτοὺς διὰ τῆς θυρίδος 15 καὶ κατεχάλασεν αὐτοὺς διὰ τῆς θυρίδος

16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be return ed; and afterward may you go your way.

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הָהָ֣רָה לֵּ֔כוּ פֶּֽן־יִפְגְּע֥וּ בָכֶ֖ם הָרֹדְפִ֑ים וְנַחְבֵּתֶ֨ם שָׁ֜מָּה שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֗ים עַ֚ד שֹׁ֣וב הָרֹֽדְפִ֔ים וְאַחַ֖ר תֵּלְכ֥וּ לְדַרְכְּכֶֽם׃

16 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς εἰς τὴν ὀρεινὴν ἀπέλθετε, μὴ συναντήσωσιν ὑμῖν οἱ καταδιώκοντες, καὶ κρυβήσεσθε ἐκεῖ τρεῖς ἡμέρας, ἕως ἄν ἀποστρέψωσιν οἱ καταδιώκοντες ὀπίσω ὑμῶν, καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἀπελεύσεσθε εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν ὑμῶν. 16 καὶ εἶπε αὐτοῖς· εἰς τὴν ὀρεινὴν ἀπέλθετε, μὴ συναντήσωσιν ὑμῖν οἱ καταδιώκοντες, καὶ κρυβήσεσθε ἐκεῖ τρεῖς ἡμέρας, ἕως ἄν ἀποστρέψωσιν οἱ καταδιώκοντες ὀπίσω ὑμῶν, καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἀπελεύσεσθε εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν ὑμῶν.

17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this your oath which you have made us swear.

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלֶ֖יהָ הָאֲנָשִׁ֑ים נְקִיִּ֣ם אֲנַ֔חְנוּ מִשְּׁבֻעָתֵ֥ךְ הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִשְׁבַּעְתָּֽנוּ׃

17 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ ἄνδρες πρὸς αὐτήν Ἀθῷοί ἐσμεν τῷ ὅρκῳ σου τούτῳ· 17 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτὴν οἱ ἄνδρες· ἀθῷοί ἔσμεν τῷ ὅρκῳ σου τούτῳ·
17 And the men said to her, “We are free of this oath of yours. 17 And the men said to her, “We are free of this oath of yours.

18 Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which you did let’s down by; and you shall bring your father, and your mother, and your brothers, and all your father’s household, home unto you.

הִנֵּ֛ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ בָאִ֖ים בָּאָ֑רֶץ אֶת־תִּקְוַ֡ת חוּט֩ הַשָּׁנִ֨י הַזֶּ֜ה תִּקְשְׁרִ֗י בַּֽחַלֹּון֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֹורַדְתֵּ֣נוּ בֹ֔ו וְאֶת־אָבִ֨יךְ וְאֶת־אִמֵּ֜ךְ וְאֶת־אַחַ֗יִךְ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יךְ תַּאַסְפִ֥י אֵלַ֖יִךְ הַבָּֽיְתָה׃

18 ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς εἰσπορευόμεθα εἰς μέρος τῆς πόλεως, καὶ θήσεις τὸ σημεῖον, τὸ σπαρτίον τὸ κόκκινον τοῦτο ἐκδήσεις εἰς τὴν θυρίδα, δι’ ἧς κατεβίβασας ἡμᾶς δι’ αὐτῆς, τὸν δὲ πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα σου καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου καὶ πάντα τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός σου συνάξεις πρὸς σεαυτὴν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν σου. 18 ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς εἰσπορευόμεθα εἰς μέρος τῆς πόλεως, καὶ θήσεις τὸ σημεῖον, τὸ σπαρτίον τὸ κόκκινον τοῦτο ἐκδήσεις εἰς τὴν θυρίδα, δι’ ἧς κατεβίβασας ἡμᾶς δι’ αὐτῆς, τὸν δὲ πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα σου καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου καὶ πάντα τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός σου συνάξεις πρὸς σεαυτὴν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν σου.

וְאִם־תַּגִּ֖ידִי אֶת־דְּבָרֵ֣נוּ זֶ֑ה וְהָיִ֣ינוּ נְקִיִּ֔ם מִשְּׁבֻעָתֵ֖ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִשְׁבַּעְתָּֽנוּ׃

21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed; and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ כְּדִבְרֵיכֶ֣ם כֶּן־ה֔וּא וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵ֖ם וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ וַתִּקְשֹׁ֛ר אֶת־תִּקְוַ֥ת הַשָּׁנִ֖י בַּחַלֹּֽון׃

22 καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν καὶ ἤλθοσαν εἰς τὴν ὀρεινὴν καὶ κατέμειναν ἐκεῖ τρεῖς ἡμέρας· καὶ ἐξεζήτησαν οἱ καταδιώκοντες πάσας τὰς ὁδοὺς καὶ οὐχ εὕροσαν. 22 καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν καὶ ἤλθοσαν εἰς τὴν ὀρεινὴν καὶ κατέμειναν ἐκεῖ τρεῖς ἡμέρας· καὶ ἐξεζήτησαν οἱ καταδιώκοντες πάσας τὰς ὁδοὺς καὶ οὐχ εὕροσαν.

23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them;

וַיָּשֻׁ֜בוּ שְׁנֵ֤י הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ וַיֵּרְד֣וּ מֵֽהָהָ֔ר וַיַּעַבְרוּ֙ וַיָּבֹ֔אוּ אֶל־יְהֹושֻׁ֖עַ בִּן־נ֑וּן וַיְסַ֨פְּרוּ־לֹ֔ו אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַמֹּצְאֹ֖ות אֹותָֽם׃

23 καὶ ὑπέστρεψαν οἱ δύο νεανίσκοι καὶ κατέβησαν ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους καὶ διέβησαν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν Ναυὴ καὶ διηγήσαντο αὐτῷ πάντα τὰ συμβεβηκότα αὐτοῖς. 23 καὶ ὑπέστρεψαν οἱ δύο νεανίσκοι καὶ κατέβησαν ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους καὶ διέβησαν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν υἱὸν Ναυὴ καὶ διηγήσαντο αὐτῷ πάντα τὰ συμβεβηκότα αὐτοῖς.

וַיֹּאמְרוּ֙ אֶל־יְהֹושֻׁ֔עַ כִּֽי־נָתַ֧ן יְהוָ֛ה בְּיָדֵ֖נוּ אֶת־כָּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וְגַם־נָמֹ֛גוּ כָּל־יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפָּנֵֽינוּ׃

24 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν ὅτι Παρέδωκεν κύριος πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἐν χειρὶ ἡμῶν, καὶ κατέπτηκεν πᾶς κατοικῶν τὴν γῆν ἐκείνην ἀφ’ ἡμῶν. 24 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Ἰησοῦν ὅτι παραδέδωκε Κύριος πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἐν χειρὶ ἡμῶν, καὶ κατέπτηχε πᾶς κατοικῶν τὴν γῆν ἐκείνην ἀφ’ ἡμῶν.
