Guile of the Gibeonites
1 And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard of it;
וַיְהִ֣י כִשְׁמֹ֣עַ כָּֽל־הַמְּלָכִ֡ים אֲשֶׁר֩ בְּעֵ֨בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֜ן בָּהָ֣ר וּבַשְּׁפֵלָ֗ה וּבְכֹל֙ חֹ֚וף הַיָּ֣ם הַגָּדֹ֔ול אֶל־מ֖וּל הַלְּבָנֹ֑ון הַֽחִתִּי֙ וְהָ֣אֱמֹרִ֔י הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ הַפְּרִזִּ֔י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִֽי׃
| 1 Ὡς δ’ ἤκουσαν οἱ βασιλεῖς τῶν Ἀμορραίων οἱ ἐν τῷ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, οἱ ἐν τῇ ὀρεινῇ καὶ οἱ ἐν τῇ πεδινῇ καὶ οἱ ἐν πάσῃ τῇ παραλίᾳ τῆς θαλάσσης τῆς μεγάλης καὶ οἱ πρὸς τῷ Ἀντιλιβάνῳ, καὶ οἱ Χετταῖοι καὶ οἱ Χαναναῖοι καὶ οἱ Φερεζαῖοι καὶ οἱ Εὐαῖοι καὶ οἱ Ἀμορραῖοι καὶ οἱ Γεργεσαῖοι καὶ οἱ Ἰεβουσαῖοι, | 1 Ὡς δὲ ἤκουσαν οἱ βασιλεῖς τῶν Ἀμορραίων οἱ ἐν τῷ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, οἱ ἐν τῇ ὀρεινῇ καὶ οἱ ἐν τῇ πεδινῇ καὶ οἱ ἐν πάσῃ τῇ παραλίᾳ τῆς θαλάσσης τῆς μεγάλης καὶ οἱ πρὸς τῷ Ἀντιλιβάνῳ καὶ οἱ Χετταῖοι καὶ οἱ Χαναναῖοι καὶ οἱ Φερεζαῖοι καὶ οἱ Εὐαῖοι καὶ οἱ Ἀμορραῖοι καὶ οἱ Γεργεσαῖοι καὶ οἱ Ἰεβουσαῖοι, |

2 That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֣וּ יַחְדָּ֔ו לְהִלָּחֵ֥ם עִם־יְהֹושֻׁ֖עַ וְעִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל פֶּ֖ה אֶחָֽד׃

4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their donkeys, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
וַיַּעֲשׂ֤וּ גַם־הֵ֙מָּה֙ בְּעָרְמָ֔ה וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ וַיִּצְטַיָּ֑רוּ וַיִּקְח֞וּ שַׂקִּ֤ים בָּלִים֙ לַחֲמֹ֣ורֵיהֶ֔ם וְנֹאדֹ֥ות יַ֙יִן֙ בָּלִ֔ים וּמְבֻקָּעִ֖ים וּמְצֹרָרִֽים׃
| 4 καὶ ἐποίησαν καὶ γε αὐτοὶ μετὰ πανουργίας καὶ ἐλθόντες ἐπεσιτίσαντο καὶ ἡτοιμάσαντο καὶ λαβόντες σάκκους παλαιοὺς ἐπὶ τῶν ὄνων αὐτῶν καὶ ἀσκοὺς οἴνου παλαιοὺς καὶ κατερρωγότας ἀποδεδεμένους, | 4 καὶ ἐποίησαν καί γε αὐτοὶ μετὰ πανουργίας καὶ ἐλθόντες ἐπεσιτίσαντο καὶ ἡτοιμάσαντο καὶ λαβόντες σάκκους παλαιοὺς ἐπὶ τῶν ὄνων αὐτῶν καὶ ἀσκοὺς οἴνου παλαιοὺς καὶ κατερρωγότας ἀποδεδεμένους, |

וּנְעָלֹ֨ות בָּלֹ֤ות וּמְטֻלָּאֹות֙ בְּרַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם וּשְׂלָמֹ֥ות בָּלֹ֖ות עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְכֹל֙ לֶ֣חֶם צֵידָ֔ם יָבֵ֖שׁ הָיָ֥ה נִקֻּדִֽים׃
| 5 καὶ τὰ κοῖλα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ σανδάλια αὐτῶν, παλαιὰ καὶ καταπεπελματωμένα ἐν τοῖς ποσίν αὐτῶν, καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν πεπαλαιωμένα ἐπάνω αὐτῶν, καὶ ὁ ἄρτος αὐτῶν τοῦ ἐπισιτισμοῦ ξηρὸς καὶ εὐρωτιῶν καὶ βεβρωμένος. | 5

6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country; now therefore make you a league with us.

ִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־הַחִוִּ֑י אוּלַ֗י בְּקִרְבִּי֙ אַתָּ֣ה יֹושֵׁ֔ב וְאֵ֖יךְ בְרִֽית׃

| 9 καὶ εἶπαν Ἐκ γῆς μακρόθεν σφόδρα ἥκασιν οἱ παῖδές σου ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ σου· ἀκηκόαμεν γὰρ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ καὶ ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ | 9 καὶ εἶπαν· ἐκ γῆς μακροθυμεῖ σφόδρα ἥκασιν οἱ παῖδές σου ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ σου· ἀκηκόαμεν γὰρ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ καὶ ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ |

וְאֵ֣ת ׀ כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֗ה לִשְׁנֵי֙ מַלְכֵ֣י הָאֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּעֵ֣בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן לְסִיחֹון֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ חֶשְׁבֹּ֔ון וּלְעֹ֥וג מֶֽלֶךְ־הַבָּשָׁ֖ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּעַשְׁתָּרֹֽות׃
| 10 καὶ ὅσα ἐποίησεν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν τῶν Ἀμορραίων, οἳ ἦσαν πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, τῷ Σηὼν βασιλεῖ Ἐσεβὼν καὶ τῷ Ὢγ βασιλεῖ τῆς Βασάν, ὃς κατῴκει ἐν Ἀσταρὼθ καὶ ἐν Ἐδραΐν. | 10 καὶ ὅσα ἐποίησε τοῖς βασιλεῦσι τῶν Ἀμορραίων, οἳ ἦσαν πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, τῷ Σηὼν βασιλεῖ τῶν Ἀμορραίων καὶ τῷ Ὢγ βασιλεῖ τῆς Βασάν, ὃς κατῴκει ἐν Ἀσταρὼθ καὶ ἐν Ἐδραΐν. |

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלֵ֡ינוּ זְֽקֵינֵינוּ֩ וְכָל־יֹשְׁבֵ֨י אַרְצֵ֜נוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר קְח֨וּ בְיֶדְכֶ֤ם צֵידָה֙ לַדֶּ֔רֶךְ וּלְכ֖וּ לִקְרָאתָ֑ם וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֤ם אֲלֵיהֶם֙ עַבְדֵיכֶ֣ם אֲנַ֔חְנוּ וְעַתָּ֖ה כִּרְתוּ־לָ֥נוּ בְרִֽית׃
| 11 καὶ ἀκούσαντες εἶπαν πρὸς ἡμᾶς οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ἡμῶν καὶ πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν γῆν ἡμῶν λέγοντες Λάβετε ἑαυτοῖς ἐπισιτισμὸν εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν καὶ πορεύθητε εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐρεῖτε πρὸς αὐτούς Οἰκέται σου ἐσμεν, καὶ νῦν διάθεσθε ἡμῖν διαθήκην. | 11 καὶ ἀκούσαντες εἶπαν πρὸς ἡμᾶς οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ἡμῶν καὶ πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν γῆν ἡμῶν λέγοντες· λάβετε ἑαυτοῖς ἐπισιτισμὸν εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν καὶ πορεύθητε εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐρεῖτε πρὸς αὐτούς· οἰκέται σού ἔσμεν, καὶ νῦν διάθεσθε ἡμῖν τὴν διαθήκην. |

זֶ֣ה ׀ לַחְמֵ֗נוּ חָ֞ם הִצְטַיַּ֤דְנוּ אֹתֹו֙ מִבָּ֣תֵּ֔ינוּ בְּיֹ֥ום צֵאתֵ֖נוּ לָלֶ֣כֶת אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם וְעַתָּה֙ הִנֵּ֣ה יָבֵ֔שׁ וְהָיָ֖ה נִקֻּדִֽים׃
| 12 οὗτοι οἱ ἄρτοι, θερμοὺς ἐφωδιάσθημεν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, ᾗ ἐξήλθομεν παραγενέσθαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς, νῦν δὲ ἐξηράνθησαν καὶ γεγόνασιν βεβρωμένοι· | 12

ἡμέρᾳ,

וְאֵ֨לֶּה נֹאדֹ֤ות הַיַּ֙יִן֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מִלֵּ֣אנוּ חֲדָשִׁ֔ים וְהִנֵּ֖ה הִתְבַּקָּ֑עוּ וְאֵ֤לֶּה שַׂלְמֹותֵ֙ינוּ֙ וּנְעָלֵ֔ינוּ בָּל֕וּ מֵרֹ֥ב הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ מְאֹֽד׃
| 13 καὶ οὗτοι οἱ ἀσκοὶ τοῦ οἴνου, οὓς ἐπλήσαμεν καινούς, καὶ οὗτοι ἐρρώγασιν· καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια ἡμῶν καὶ τὰ ὑποδήματα ἡμῶν πεπαλαίωται ἀπὸ τῆς πολλῆς ὁδοῦ σφόδρα. | 13 καὶ οὗτοι οἱ ἀσκοὶ τοῦ οἴνου, οὓς ἐπλήσαμεν καινούς, καὶ οὗτοι ἐρρώγασι· καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια ἡμῶν καὶ τὰ ὑποδήματα ἡμῶν πεπαλαίωται ἀπὸ τῆς πολλῆς ὁδοῦ σφόδρα. |

14 And the men took of their food, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
וַיִּקְח֥וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים מִצֵּידָ֑ם וְאֶת־פִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֥א שָׁאָֽלוּ׃

וַיַּ֨עַשׂ לָהֶ֤ם יְהֹושֻׁ֙עַ֙ שָׁלֹ֔ום וַיִּכְרֹ֥ת לָהֶ֛ם בְּרִ֖ית לְחַיֹּותָ֑ם וַיִּשָּׁבְע֣וּ לָהֶ֔ם נְשִׂיאֵ֖י הָעֵדָֽה׃
| 15 καὶ ἐποίησεν Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰρήνην καὶ διέθετο πρὸς αὐτοὺς διαθήκην τοῦ διασῶσαι αὐτούς, καὶ ὤμοσαν αὐτοῖς οἱ ἄρχοντες τῆς συναγωγῆς. | 15 καὶ ἐποίησεν Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰρήνην καὶ διέθεντο πρὸς αὐτοὺς διαθήκην τοῦ διασῶσαι αὐτούς, καὶ ὤμοσαν αὐτοῖς οἱ ἄρχοντες τῆς συναγωγῆς. |

22 And Joshua called for them, and he spoke unto them, saying, Why have you beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when you dwell among us?

וְעַתָּ֖ה אֲרוּרִ֣ים אַתֶּ֑ם וְלֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֨ת מִכֶּ֜ם עֶ֗בֶד וְחֹטְבֵ֥י עֵצִ֛ים וְשֹֽׁאֲבֵי־מַ֖יִם לְבֵ֥ית אֱלֹהָֽי׃

24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told your servants, how that the LORD your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
וַיַּעֲנ֨וּ אֶת־יְהֹושֻׁ֜עַ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ כִּי֩ הֻגֵּ֨ד הֻגַּ֤ד לַעֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֜ה יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֣ה עַבְדֹּ֔ו לָתֵ֤ת לָכֶם֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָאָ֔רֶץ וּלְהַשְׁמִ֛יד אֶת־כָּל־יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֑ם וַנִּירָ֨א מְאֹ֤ד לְנַפְשֹׁתֵ֙ינוּ֙ מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם וַֽנַּעֲשֵׂ֖ה אֶת־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃
| 24 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῖ λέγοντες Ἀνηγγέλη ἡμῖν ὅσα συνέταξεν κύριος ὁ θεός σου Μωυσῇ τῷ παιδὶ αὐτοῦ, δοῦναι ὑμῖν τὴν γῆν ταύτην καὶ ἐξολεθρεῦσαι ἡμᾶς καὶ πάντας τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐπ’ αὐτῆς ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν, καὶ ἐφοβήθημεν σφόδρα περὶ τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν καὶ ἐποιήσαμεν τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο. | 24 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν τῷ Ἰησοῖ λέγοντες· ἀνηγγέλη ἡμῖν ὅσα συνέταξε Κύριος ὁ Θεός σου Μωυσῇ τῷ παιδὶ αὐτοῦ, δοῦναι ὑμῖν τὴν γῆν ταύτην καὶ ἐξολοθρεῦσαι ἡμᾶς καὶ πάντας τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐπ’ αὐτῆς πρὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν, καὶ ἐφοβήθημεν σφόδρα περὶ τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν ἀπὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν καὶ ἐποιήσαμεν τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο. |

וְעַתָּ֖ה הִנְנ֣וּ בְיָדֶ֑ךָ כַּטֹּ֨וב וְכַיָּשָׁ֧ר בְּעֵינֶ֛יךָ לַעֲשֹׂ֥ות לָ֖נוּ עֲשֵֽׂה׃

26 And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

27 And Joshua made those who day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
וַיִּתְּנֵ֨ם יְהֹושֻׁ֜עַ בַּיֹּ֣ום הַה֗וּא חֹטְבֵ֥י עֵצִ֛ים וְשֹׁ֥אֲבֵי מַ֖יִם לָֽעֵדָ֑ה וּלְמִזְבַּ֤ח יְהוָה֙ עַד־הַיֹּ֣ום הַזֶּ֔ה אֶל־הַמָּקֹ֖ום אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְחָֽר׃
| 27 καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ξυλοκόπους καὶ ὑδροφόρους πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ καὶ τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ τοῦ θεοῦ· διὰ τοῦτο ἐγένοντο οἱ κατοικοῦντες Γαβαὼν ξυλοκόποι καὶ ὑδροφόροι τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ θεοῦ ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας καὶ εἰς τὸν τόπον, ὃν ἐὰν ἐκλέξηται κύριος. | 27 καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτοὺς Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ξυλοκόπους καὶ ὑδροφόρους πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ καὶ τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ· διὰ τοῦτο ἐγένοντο οἱ κατοικοῦντες Γαβαὼν ξυλοκόποι καὶ ὑδροφόροι τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας, καὶ εἰς τὸν τόπον, ὃν ἄν ἐκλέξηται Κύριος. |
