Chapter 18
NAS | TextRec |
---|---|
Now he was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, | And he spoke a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; |
saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who didn’t fear God and didn’t respect man. | Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: |
There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ | And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. |
18:4 καὶ
οὐκ
ἐπὶ
For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God nor respect man, | And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; |
yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.’” | Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. |
And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge said; | And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge says. |
now, will not God bring about justice for his elect who cry to him day and night, and will he delay long over them? | And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? |
ὅτι
τὴν
ἐν
I tell you that he will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” | I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man comes, shall he find faith on the earth? |
And he also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: | And he spoke this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: |
“Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. | Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. |
The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. | The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. |
I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ | I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. |
But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ | And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. |
εἰς
τὸν
I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.” | I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. |
δὲ
καὶ
τὰ
ἵνα
And they were bringing even their babies to him so that he would touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them. | And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them. |
But Jesus called for them, saying, “Permit the children to come to me, and don’t hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. | But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. |
Truly I say to you, whoever doesn’t receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.” | Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein. |
A ruler questioned him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” | And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? |
δὲ
ὁ
τί
με
And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. | And Jesus said unto him, Why callest you me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. |
18:20 τὰς
You know the commandments, ‘Don’t commit adultery, Don’t murder, Don’t steal, Don’t bear false witness, honour your father and mother.’” | You knowest the commandments, Don’t commit adultery, Don’t kill, Don’t steal, Don’t bear false witness, Honour your father and your mother. |
And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.” | And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. |
δὲ
ὁ
ἔτι
ἕν
σοι
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” | Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest you one thing: sell all that you have, and distribute unto the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. |
18:23 ὁ
δὲ
But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. | And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. |
And Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! | And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! |
For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” | For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. |
They who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” | And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved? |
But he said, “The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.” | And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. |
Peter said, “Behold, we have left our own homes and followed You.” | Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed you. |
And he said to them, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, | And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that has left house, or parents, or brothers, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake, |
who will not receive many times as much at this time and in the age to come, eternal life.” | Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting. |
Then he took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. | Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. |
For he will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon, | For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: |
and after they have scourged him, they will kill him; and the third day he will rise again.” | And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. |
But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they didn’t comprehend the things that were said. | And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken. |
As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. | And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging: |
Now hearing a crowd going by, he began to inquire what this was. | And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant. |
They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. | And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. |
And he called out, saying, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” | And he cried, saying, Jesus, you son of David, have mercy on me. |
Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet; but he kept crying out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” | And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, You son of David, have mercy on me. |

And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to him; and when he came near, he questioned him, | And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him, |
18:41 τί
σοι

“What do you want me to do for you?” And he said, “Lord, I want to regain my sight!” | Saying, What will you that I shall do unto you? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight. |
18:42 καὶ

And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” | And Jesus said unto him, Receive your sight: your faith has saved you. |

Immediately he regained his sight and began following him, glorifying God; and when all the people saw it, they gave praise to God. | And immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God. |
