Israel’s Last Days

1 And it happened after these things, that someone told Joseph, Behold, your father is sick: and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

1 Now it happened after these things that it was reported to Jōsēph, “Your father is ill.” And after he took along his two sons, Manassē and Ephraim, he went to Jakōb. 1 Now it happened after these things that it was reported to Jōsēph, “Your father is ill.” And after he took along his two sons, Manassē and Ephraim, he went to Jakōb.

2 And someone told Jacob, and said, Behold, your son Joseph comes unto you: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.

2 And it was reported to Jakōb saying, “Look! your son Jōsēph is coming to you.” And after making physical effort, Israēl sat upon the bed. 2 And it was reported to Jakōb saying, “Look! your son Jōsēph is coming to you.” And after making physical effort, Israēl sat upon the bed.

3 And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

3 And Jakōb said to Jōsēph, “ My God appeared to me in Louza in Chanaan-land, and he blessed me 3 And Jakōb said to Jōsēph, “ My God appeared to me in Louza in Chanaan-land, and he blessed me

4 And said unto me, Behold, I will make you fruitful, and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of people; and will give this land to your seed after you for an everlasting possession.

4 and said to me, ‘Look! I will increase you and will multiply you and will make you into gatherings of nations and will give to you this land, and to your offspring after you, for an eternal possession.’ 4 and said to me, ‘Look! I will increase you and will multiply you and will make you into gatherings of nations and will give to you this land, and to your offspring after you, for an eternal possession.’

5 And now your two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born unto you in the land of Egypt before I came unto you into Egypt, are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.

5 Now therefore your two sons, who were born to you in Aigypt before I came into Aigypt to you, are mine, Ephraim and Manassē; like Rhoubēn and Symeōn they shall be mine. 5 Now therefore your two sons, who were born to you in Aigypt’s land before I came into Aigypt to you, are mine, Ephraim and Manassē; like Rhoubēn and Symeōn they shall be mine.

6 And your issue, which you father after them, shall be yours, and shall be called after the name of their brothers in their inheritance.

6 But the descendants that you may father hereafter shall be yours; they shall be called after the name of their brothers in their portions. 6 But the descendants that you may father hereafter shall be yours; they shall be called after the name of their brothers in their portions.

7 And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same is Bethlehem.

7 Now as for me, when I was coming from Mesopotamia of Syria, your mother Rhachēl died in Chanaan-land, while I was drawing near, by the hippodrome of Chabratha, of the land, to go to Ephratha, and I buried her on the way to the hippodrome, (this is Baithleem).” 7 Now as for me, when I was coming from Mesopotamia of Syria, your mother Rhachēl died in Chanaan-land, while I was drawing near, by the hippodrome of Chabratha, of the land, to go to Ephratha, and I buried her on the way to the hippodrome, (this is Baithleem).”

8 And Israel beheld Joseph’s sons, and said, Who are these?

8 Ἰδὼν δὲ Ἰσραὴλ τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰωσὴφ εἶπεν Τίνες σοί οὗτοι; 8 ἰδὼν δὲ Ἰσραὴλ τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰωσὴφ εἶπε· τίνες σοι οὗτοι;
8 And when Israēl saw Jōsēph’s sons, he said, “Who are these to you?” 8 And when Israēl saw Jōsēph’s sons, he said, “Who are these to you?”

9 And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God has given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray you, unto me, and I will bless them.

9 And Jōsēph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And Jakōb said, “Bring them to me in order that I may bless them.” 9 And Jōsēph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And Jakōb said, “Bring them to me in order that I may bless them.”

10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, so that he couldn’t see. And he brought them near unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them.

10 Now Israēl’s eyes had blurred vision from old age, and they could not see. And he brought them near to him, and he kissed them and embraced them. 10 Now Israēl’s eyes had blurred vision from old age, and they could not see. And he brought them near to him, and he kissed them and embraced them.

11 And Israel said unto Joseph, I hadn’t thought to see your face: and, lo, God has shown me also your seed.

11 And Israēl said to Jōsēph, “Look! I was not deprived of your face, and look, God has shown me your offspring also.” 11 And Israēl said to Jōsēph, “Look! I was not deprived of your face, and look, God has shown me your offspring also.”

12 And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.

12 And Jōsēph brought them from his knees, and they did obeisance to him face down upon the earth. 12 And Jōsēph brought them from his knees, and they did obeisance to him face down upon the earth.

13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near unto him.

13 Then when Jōsēph had taken his two sons, both Ephraim in his right hand but on Israēl’s left, and Manassē in his left hand but on Israēl’s right, he brought them near him. 13 Then when Jōsēph had taken his two sons, both Ephraim in his right hand but on Israēl’s left, and Manassē in his left hand but on Israēl’s right, he brought them near him.

14 And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn.

14 But after Israēl stretched out his right hand, he laid it on the head of Ephraim, and he was the younger; and his left hand on the head of Manassē, his hands crosswise. 14 But after Israēl stretched out his right hand, he laid it on the head of Ephraim, and he was the younger; and his left hand on the head of Manassē, his hands crosswise.

15 And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who fed me all my life long unto this day,

17 And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head.

19 And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

19 And he would not, but said, “I know, child, I know; this one also shall become a people, and this one shall be exalted, but his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations.” 19 And he would not, but said, “I know, child, I know; this one also shall become a people, and this one shall be exalted, but his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations.”

20 And he blessed those who day, saying, In you shall Israel bless, saying, God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

20 And he blessed them on that day, saying, “In you Israēl will be blessed when they say,

‘God make you like Ephraim and like Manassē.’”

And he put Ephraim ahead of Manassē.
20 And he blessed them on that day, saying, “In you Israēl will be blessed when they say,

‘God make you like Ephraim and like Manassē.’ ”

And he put Ephraim ahead of Manassē.

21 And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers.
