The Usefulness of Proverbs
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israēl;

2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
| 2 to know wisdom and instruction, and to consider words of understanding; | 2 to know wisdom and instruction, and to consider words of understanding; |
3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
| 3 to receive subtle saying, and to understand true righteousness, and how to direct judgment; | 3 to receive subtle saying, and to understand true righteousness, and how to direct judgment; |
4 To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
| 4 in order that he might give cleverness to the innocent, and perception and knowledge to the young person. | 4 in order that he might give cleverness to the innocent, and perception and knowledge to the young person. |
5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
| 5 For by hearing these things, a wise man will be wiser, and an intelligent man will get guidance; | 5 For by hearing these things, a wise man will be wiser, and an intelligent man will get guidance; |
6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
| 6 and will understand a parable, and an ambiguous statement; even the sayings and riddles of the wise. | 6 and will understand a parable, and an ambiguous statement; even the sayings and riddles of the wise. |
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
| 7 The beginning of wisdom is the fear of God; and understanding is good to all who practise it; and piety toward God is the beginning of discernment; but the ungodly will despise wisdom and instruction. | 7 The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord; and understanding is good to all who practise it; and piety toward God is the beginning of discernment; but the ungodly will despise wisdom and instruction. |
The Enticement of Sinners
8 My son, hear the instruction of your father, and don’t forsake the law of your mother:
| 8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and don’t reject your mother’s precepts. | 8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and don’t reject your mother’s precepts. |
9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto your head, and chains about your neck.
| 9 For you shall receive for your head a crown of graces, and a collar of gold around your neck. | 9 For you shall receive for your head a crown of graces, and a collar of gold around your neck. |
10 My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.
| 10 My son, don’t let ungodly men lead you astray, neither consent to them if they invite you saying, | 10 My son, don’t let ungodly men lead you astray, neither consent to them, |
11 If they say, Come with us, let’s lay wait for blood, let’s lurk privately for the innocent without cause:
| 11 Come with us, share in blood, and let’s unjustly hide the just man in the ground: | 11 If they should invite you, saying, Come with us, share in blood, and let’s unjustly hide the just man in the ground: |
12 Let’s swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those who go down into the pit:
| 12 and let’s swallow him alive, as Hades would, and remove his memory from the earth: | 12 and let’s swallow him alive, as Hades would, and remove his memory from the earth: |
13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
| 13 let’s seize his valuable property, and let’s fill our houses with spoils: | 13 let’s seize his valuable property, and let’s fill our houses with spoils: |
14 Cast in your lot among us; let’s all have one purse:
| 14 but cast in your lot with us, and let’s all get a common money bag, and let’s have one purse: | 14 now throw in your lot with us, and let’s all provide a common money bag, and let’s have one purse: |
15 My son, walk not you in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path:
| 15 Don’t go in the way with them, but turn your foot away from their paths: | 15 Don’t go in the way with them, but turn your foot away from their paths: |
16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
| 16 because their feet run to evil and are quick to shed blood. | 16 because their feet run to evil and are quick to shed blood. |
17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
| 17 for nets are not spread for birds without purpose. | 17 for nets are not spread for birds without purpose. |
18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privately for their own lives.
| 18 For they who share in murder, store up evils for themselves; and the overthrow of lawless men is evil. | 18 For they who share in murder, store up evils for themselves; and the overthrow of lawless men is evil. |
19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; who take away the life of the owners of it.
| 19 These are the ways of all who perform lawlessness; for by ungodliness they destroy their own life. | 19 These are the ways of all who perform lawlessness; for by ungodliness they destroy their own life. |
Wisdom Warns
20 Wisdom cries without; she utters her voice in the streets:
| 20 Wisdom is sung on the road, and leads plainly in the wide streets. | 20 Wisdom is sung on the road, and leads plainly in the wide streets. |
21 She cries in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she utters her words, saying,
| 21 And she is proclaimed on the top of the walls, and she sits by the gates of strong men; and at the gates of the city she boldly says, | 21 And she is proclaimed on the top of the walls, and she sits by the gates of strong men; and at the gates of the city she boldly says, |
22 How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

| 22 As long as naïve people cling to righteousness, they shall not be ashamed; but the fools, being lovers of pride, after having become ungodly, have hated discernment. | 22 As long as naïve people cling to righteousness, they shall not be ashamed; but the fools, being lovers of pride, after having become ungodly, have hated discernment. |
23 Turn at my reproof: look, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

24 Because I have called, and you refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

| 24 And after calling, you didn’t listen; and I spoke at length, and you didn’t pay attention; | 24 And after calling, you didn’t listen; and I spoke at length, and you didn’t pay attention; |
25 But you have set at nothing all my counsel, and would have none of my reproof:

| 25 but you made my advice invalid, and disobeyed my reproofs; | 25 but you made my advice invalid, and disobeyed my reproofs; |
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes;

| 26 therefore I also will laugh at your destruction; and I will rejoice over you when ruin comes upon you: | 26 therefore I also will laugh at your destruction; and I will rejoice over you when ruin comes upon you: |
27 When your fear comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you.

28 Then shall they call upon me, but I won’t answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

| 29 For they hated wisdom, and didn’t choose the fear of the Lord: | 29 For they hated wisdom, and didn’t choose the word of the Lord: |
30 They would have none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

| 30 neither would they pay attention to my advice, but ridiculed my reproofs. | 30 neither would they pay attention to my advice, but ridiculed my reproofs. |
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
