Census Taken
1 And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israēl, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israēl and Judah.
1 And the Lord caused his anger to burn forth again in Israēl, and Satan stirred up David against them, saying, Go, number Israēl and Jouda. | 1 And the Lord caused his anger to burn forth again in Israēl, and Satan stirred up David against them, saying, Go, number Israēl and Jouda. |
2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the army, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israēl, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number you the people, that I may know the number of the people.
2 And the king said to Joab commander of the army, who was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israēl and Jouda, from Dan even to Bērsabee, and number the people, and I will know the number of the people. | 2 And the king said to Joab commander of the army, who was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israēl and Jouda, from Dan even to Bērsabee, and number the people, and I will know the number of the people. |
3 And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD your God add unto the people, how many they ever be, 100-fold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?

3 And Joab said to the king, Now may the Lord add to the people 100-fold as many as they are, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why does my lord the king desire this thing? | 3 And Joab said to the king, Now may the Lord add to the people 100-fold as many as they are, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why does my lord the king desire this thing? |
4 Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the army. And Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israēl.

5 And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lies in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:

Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and about to Zidon,

6 And they came to Galaad, and into the land of Thabason, which is Adasai, and they came to Danidan and Udan, and surrounded Sidon. | 6 And they came to Galaad, and into the land of Thabason, which is Adasai, and they came to Danidan and Udan, and surrounded Sidon. |
7 And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hibites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-sheba.

7 And they came to Mapsar of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Evite and the Chananite: and they came by the South of Jouda to Bērsabee. | 7 And they came to Mapsar of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Evite and the Chananite: and they came by the South of Jouda to Bērsabee. |
8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and 20 days.

8 And they surrounded the whole land; and they arrived at Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. | 8 And they surrounded the whole land; and they arrived at Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. |
9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israēl 800,000 valiant men who drew the sword; and the men of Judah were 500,000 men.

9 And Joab gave in the number of the census of the people to the king: and Israēl consisted of 800,000 men of might that drew sword; and the men of Jouda, 500,000 fighting men. | 9 And Joab gave in the number of the census of the people to the king: and Israēl consisted of 800,000 men of might that drew sword; and the men of Jouda, 500,000 fighting men. |
10 And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech you, Oh LORD, take away the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.

11 For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,

12 Go and say unto David, Thus says the LORD, I offer you three things; choose you one of them, that I may do it unto you.

13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto you in your land? or will you flee three months before your enemies, while they pursue you? or that there be three days’ pestilence in your land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him who sent me.

13 And Gad went in to David, and told him, and said to him, Choose one of these things to befall you, whether there shall come upon you for three years famine in your land; or that you should flee three months before your enemies, and they should pursue you; or that there should be for three days mortality in your land. Now then decide, and see what answer I shall return to him who sent me. |
14 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let’s fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and don’t let me fall into the hand of man.

14 And David said to Gad, On every side I am much restricted: let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies are very many; and don’t let me fall into the hands of man. | 14 And David said to Gad, On every side I am much restricted: let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies are very many; and don’t let me fall into the hands of man. |
Pestilence Sent
15 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israēl from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba 70,000 men.

15 So David chose for himself the mortality: and they were the days of wheat-harvest; and the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israēl from morning till noon, and the plague began among the people; and there died of the people from Dan even to Bērsabee 70,000 men. | 15 So David chose for himself the mortality: and they were the days of wheat-harvest; and the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israēl from morning till noon, and the plague began among the people; and there died of the people from Dan even to Bērsabee 70,000 men. |
16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now your hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing-place of Araunah the Jebusite.

16 And the angel of the Lord stretched out his hand against Jerusalem to destroy it, and the Lord repented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough now, withhold your hand. 17 And David spoke unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let your hand, I pray you, be against me, and against my father’s house.
