Kings of Israēl: Jehoahaz and Jehoash

1 In the three and 20th year of Joash the son of Ahaziah king of Judah Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israēl in Samaria, and reigned 17 years.

בִּשְׁנַ֨ת עֶשְׂרִ֤ים וְשָׁלֹשׁ֙ שָׁנָ֔ה לְיֹואָ֥שׁ בֶּן־אֲחַזְיָ֖הוּ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה מָ֠לַךְ יְהֹואָחָ֨ז בֶּן־יֵה֤וּא עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּשֹׁ֣מְרֹ֔ון שְׁבַ֥ע עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה שָׁנָֽה׃

2 And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israēl to sin; he didn’t depart there from.

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַ֠יֵּלֶךְ אַחַ֨ר חַטֹּ֜את יָרָבְעָ֧ם בֶּן־נְבָ֛ט אֲשֶׁר־הֶחֱטִ֥יא אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹא־סָ֥ר מִמֶּֽנָּה׃

2 καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς κυρίου καὶ ἐπορεύθη ὀπίσω ἁμαρτιῶν Ἰεροβοὰμ υἱοῦ Ναβάτ, ὃς ἐξήμαρτεν τὸν Ἰσραήλ, οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν. 2 καὶ ἐποίησε τὸ πονηρὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς Κυρίου καὶ ἐπορεύθης ὀπίσω ἁμαρτιῶν Ἱεροβοὰμ υἱοῦ Ναβάτ, ὃς ἐξήμαρτε τὸν Ἰσραήλ, οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀπ’ αὐτῶν.

וַיִּֽחַר־אַ֥ף יְהוָ֖ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֞ם בְּיַ֣ד ׀ חֲזָאֵ֣ל מֶֽלֶךְ־אֲרָ֗ם וּבְיַ֛ד בֶּן־הֲדַ֥ד בֶּן־חֲזָאֵ֖ל כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃

3 καὶ ὠργίσθη θυμῷ κύριος ἐν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοὺς ἐν χειρὶ Ἀζαὴλ βασιλέως Συρίας καὶ ἐν χειρὶ υἱοῦ Ἀδὲρ υἱοῦ Ἀζαὴλ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας. 3 καὶ ὠργίσθη θυμῷ Κύριος ἐν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοὺς ἐν χειρὶ Ἀζαὴλ βασιλέως Συρίας καὶ ἐν χειρὶ υἱοῦ Ἄδερ υἱοῦ Ἀζαὴλ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας.

4 And Jehoahaz besought the LORD, and the LORD listened unto him: for he saw the oppression of Israēl, because the king of Syria oppressed them.

4 καὶ ἐδεήθη Ἰωαχὰς τοῦ προσώπου κυρίου, καὶ ἐπήκουσεν αὐτοῦ κύριος, ὅτι εἶδεν τὴν θλῖψιν Ἰσραήλ, ὅτι ἔθλιψεν αὐτοὺς βασιλεὺς Συρίας. 4 καὶ ἐδεήθη Ἰωάχαζ τοῦ προσώπου Κυρίου, καὶ ἐπήκουσεν αὐτοῦ Κύριος, ὅτι εἶδε τὴν θλῖψιν Ἰσραήλ, ὅτι ἔθλιψεν αὐτοὺς βασιλεὺς Συρίας.

5 (And the LORD gave Israēl a saviour, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians: and the children of Israēl dwelt in their tents, as beforetime.

5 καὶ ἔδωκεν κύριος σωτηρίαν τῷ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὑποκάτωθεν χειρὸς Συρίας, καὶ ἐκάθισαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἐν τοῖς σκηνώμασιν αὐτῶν καθὼς ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτης· 5 καὶ ἔδωκεν Κύριος σωτηρίαν τῷ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὑποκάτωθεν χειρὸς Συρίας.
καὶ ἐκάθισαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἐν τοῖς σκηνώμασιν αὐτῶν καθὼς σάρκες καὶ τρίτης·

7 Neither did he leave of the people to Jehoahaz but 50 horsemen, and ten chariots, and 10,000 footmen; for the king of Syria had destroyed them, and had made them like the dust by threshing.

7 ὅτι οὐχ ὑπελείφθη τῷ Ἰωαχὰς λαὸς ἀλλ’ πεντήκοντα ἱππεῖς καὶ δέκα ἅρματα καὶ δέκα χιλιάδες πεζῶν, ὅτι ἀπώλεσεν αὐτοὺς βασιλεὺς Συρίας καὶ ἔθεντο αὐτοὺς ὡς χοῦν εἰς καταπάτησιν. 7 ὅτι οὐχ ὑπελείφθη τῷ Ἰωάχαζ λαός, ἀλλ’ πεντήκοντα ἱππεῖς καὶ δέκα ἅρματα καὶ δέκα χιλιάδες πεζῶν, ὅτι ἀπώλεσεν αὐτοὺς βασιλεὺς Συρίας, καὶ ἔθεντο αὐτοὺς ὡς χοῦν εἰς καταπάτησιν.

8 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ἰωαχὰς καὶ πάντα, ὅσα ἐποίησεν, καὶ αἱ δυναστεῖαι αὐτοῦ, οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰσραήλ; 8 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ἰωάχαζ καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησε καὶ αἱ δυναστεῖαι αὐτοῦ, οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰσραήλ;

9 And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria: and Joash his son reigned in his stead.

וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב יְהֹֽואָחָז֙ עִם־אֲבֹתָ֔יו וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֖הוּ בְּשֹׁמְרֹ֑ון וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ יֹואָ֥שׁ בְּנֹ֖ו תַּחְתָּֽיו׃


10 In the 37th year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israēl in Samaria, and reigned 16 years.

12 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ἰωὰς καὶ πάντα, ὅσα ἐποίησεν, καὶ αἱ δυναστεῖαι αὐτοῦ, ἃς ἐποίησεν μετὰ Ἀμεσσιοὺ βασιλέως Ἰούδα, οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰσραήλ; 12 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ἰωὰς καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησε, καὶ αἱ δυναστεῖαι αὐτοῦ, ἃς ἐποίησε μετὰ Ἀμεσσίου βασιλέως Ἰούδα, οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰσραήλ;

13 And Joash slept with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat upon his throne: and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israēl.

וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב יֹואָשׁ֙ עִם־אֲבֹתָ֔יו וְיָרָבְעָ֖ם יָשַׁ֣ב עַל־כִּסְאֹ֑ו וַיִּקָּבֵ֤ר יֹואָשׁ֙ בְּשֹׁ֣מְרֹ֔ון עִ֖ם מַלְכֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃


Death of Elisha

14 Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness of which he died. And Joash the king of Israēl came down unto him, and wept over his face, and said, Oh my father, my father, the chariot of Israēl, and the horsemen of it.

וֶֽאֱלִישָׁע֙ חָלָ֣ה אֶת־חָלְיֹ֔ו אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָמ֖וּת בֹּ֑ו וַיֵּ֨רֶד אֵלָ֜יו יֹואָ֣שׁ מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיֵּ֤בְךְּ עַל־פָּנָיו֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר אָבִ֣י ׀ אָבִ֔י רֶ֥כֶב יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וּפָרָשָֽׁיו׃

14 καὶ Ἐλισαιὲ ἠρρώστησεν τὴν ἀρρωστίαν αὐτοῦ, δι’ ἣν ἀπέθανεν.
καὶ κατέβη πρὸς αὐτὸν Ἰωὰς βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ἔκλαυσεν ἐπὶ προσώπου αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν πάτερ πάτερ, ἅρμα Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ἱππεὺς αὐτοῦ.

15 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἐλισαιὲ λαβὲ τόξον καὶ βέλη· καὶ ἔλαβεν πρὸς αὐτὸν τόξον καὶ βέλη. 15 καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ Ἑλισαιέ· λάβε τόξον καὶ βέλη.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הַרְכֵּ֤ב יָֽדְךָ֙ עַל־הַקֶּ֔שֶׁת וַיַּרְכֵּ֖ב יָדֹ֑ו וַיָּ֧שֶׂם אֱלִישָׁ֛ע יָדָ֖יו עַל־יְדֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃


17 And he said, Open the window eastward. And he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he said, The arrow of the LORD’s deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria: for you shall smite the Syrians in Aphek, till you have consumed them.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר פְּתַ֧ח הַחַלֹּ֛ון קֵ֖דְמָה וַיִּפְתָּ֑ח וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלִישָׁ֤ע יְרֵה֙ וַיֹּ֔ור וַיֹּ֗אמֶר חֵץ־תְּשׁוּעָ֤ה לַֽיהוָה֙ וְחֵ֣ץ תְּשׁוּעָ֣ה בַֽאֲרָ֔ם וְהִכִּיתָ֧ אֶת־אֲרָ֛ם בַּאֲפֵ֖ק עַד־כַּלֵּֽה׃

17 καὶ εἶπεν ἄνοιξον τὴν θυρίδα κατ’ ἀνατολάς· καὶ ἤνοιξεν.
καὶ εἶπεν Ἐλισαιὲ τόξευσον· καὶ ἐτόξευσεν.
καὶ εἶπεν βέλος σωτηρίας τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ βέλος σωτηρίας ἐν Συρίᾳ, καὶ πατάξεις τὴν Συρίαν ἐν Ἀφὲκ ἕως συντελείας.

And Elisaie said, The arrow of the Lord’s deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria; and you shall smite the Syrians in Aphek until you have consumed them.

18 And he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israēl, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed.

21 And it came to be, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

וַיְהִ֞י הֵ֣ם ׀ קֹבְרִ֣ים אִ֗ישׁ וְהִנֵּה֙ רָא֣וּ אֶֽת־הַגְּד֔וּד וַיַּשְׁלִ֥יכוּ אֶת־הָאִ֖ישׁ בְּקֶ֣בֶר אֱלִישָׁ֑ע וַיֵּ֜לֶךְ וַיִּגַּ֤ע הָאִישׁ֙ בְּעַצְמֹ֣ות אֱלִישָׁ֔ע וַיְחִ֖י וַיָּ֥קָם עַל־רַגְלָֽיו׃

וַֽחֲזָאֵל֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָ֔ם לָחַ֖ץ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֥י יְהֹואָחָֽז׃

23 And the LORD was gracious unto them, and had mercy on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet.

וַיָּחָן֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֹתָ֤ם וַֽיְרַחֲמֵם֙ וַיִּ֣פֶן אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם לְמַ֣עַן בְּרִיתֹ֔ו אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֖ם יִצְחָ֣ק וְיַֽעֲקֹ֑ב וְלֹ֤א אָבָה֙ הַשְׁחִיתָ֔ם וְלֹֽא־הִשְׁלִיכָ֥ם מֵֽעַל־פָּנָ֖יו עַד־עָֽתָּה׃


24 So Hazael king of Syria died; and Ben-hadad his son reigned in his stead.

וַיָּ֖מָת חֲזָאֵ֣ל מֶֽלֶךְ־אֲרָ֑ם וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ בֶּן־הֲדַ֥ד בְּנֹ֖ו תַּחְתָּֽיו׃

24 καὶ ἀπέθανεν Ἀζαὴλ βασιλεὺς Συρίας, καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν υἱὸς Ἀδὲρ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀντ’ αὐτοῦ. 24 καὶ ἀπέθανεν Ἀζαὴλ βασιλεὺς Συρίας,

וַיָּ֜שָׁב יְהֹואָ֣שׁ בֶּן־יְהֹואָחָ֗ז וַיִּקַּ֤ח אֶת־הֶֽעָרִים֙ מִיַּד֙ בֶּן־הֲדַ֣ד בֶּן־חֲזָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָקַ֗ח מִיַּ֛ד יְהֹואָחָ֥ז אָבִ֖יו בַּמִּלְחָמָ֑ה שָׁלֹ֤שׁ פְּעָמִים֙ הִכָּ֣הוּ יֹואָ֔שׁ וַיָּ֖שֶׁב אֶת־עָרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

25 καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν Ἰωὰς υἱὸς Ἰωαχὰς καὶ ἔλαβεν τὰς πόλεις ἐκ χειρὸς υἱοῦ Ἀδὲρ υἱοῦ Ἀζαήλ, ἃς ἔλαβεν ἐκ χειρὸς Ἰωαχὰς τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ· τρὶς ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν Ἰωὰς καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν τὰς πόλεις Ἰσραήλ. 25 καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Ἰωὰς υἱὸς Ἰωάχαζ καὶ ἔλαβε τὰς πόλεις ἐκ χειρὸς υἱοῦ Ἄδερ υἱοῦ Ἀζαήλ, ἃς ἔλαβεν ἐκ χειρὸς Ἰωάχαζ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ· τρὶς ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν Ἰωὰς καὶ ἐπέστρεψε τὰς πόλεις Ἰσραήλ.
