Joab Reproves David’s Lament

1 And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weep s and mourns for Absalom.

וַיֻּגַּ֖ד לְיֹואָ֑ב הִנֵּ֨ה הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ בֹּכֶ֛ה וַיִּתְאַבֵּ֖ל עַל־אַבְשָׁלֹֽם׃

1 καὶ ἀνηγγέλη τῷ Ἰωὰβ λέγοντες Ἰδοὺ ὁ βασιλεὺς κλαίει καὶ πενθεῖ ἐπὶ Ἀβεσσαλώμ. 1 Καὶ ἀνηγγέλη τῷ Ἰωὰβ λέγοντες· ἰδοὺ ὁ βασιλεὺς κλαίει καὶ πενθεῖ ἐπὶ Ἀβεσσαλώμ.

2 And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son.

וַתְּהִ֨י הַתְּשֻׁעָ֜ה בַּיֹּ֥ום הַה֛וּא לְאֵ֖בֶל לְכָל־הָעָ֑ם כִּֽי־שָׁמַ֣ע הָעָ֗ם בַּיֹּ֤ום הַהוּא֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר נֶעֱצַ֥ב הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ עַל־בְּנֹֽו׃

2 καὶ ἐγένετο ἡ σωτηρίᾳ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ εἰς πένθος παντὶ τῷ λαῷ, ὅτι ἤκουσεν ὁ λαὸς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ λέγων ὅτι λυπεῖται ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ· 2 καὶ ἐγένετο ἡ σωτηρία ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ εἰς πένθος παντὶ τῷ λαῷ, ὅτι ἤκουσεν ὁ λαὸς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ λέγων, ὅτι λυπεῖται ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ.

3 And the people got them by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

וַיִּתְגַּנֵּ֥ב הָעָ֛ם בַּיֹּ֥ום הַה֖וּא לָבֹ֣וא הָעִ֑יר כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יִתְגַּנֵּ֗ב הָעָם֙ הַנִּכְלָמִ֔ים בְּנוּסָ֖ם בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

3 καὶ διεκλέπτετο ὁ λαὸς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καθὼς διακλέπτεται ὁ λαὸς οἱ αἰσχυνόμενοι ἐν τῷ αὐτοὺς φεύγειν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ. 3 καὶ διεκλέπτετο ὁ λαὸς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν πόλιν, καθὼς διακλέπτεται ὁ λαὸς οἱ αἰσχυνόμενοι ἐν τῷ αὐτοὺς φεύγειν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ.

4 But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, Oh my son Absalom, Oh Absalom, my son, my son!

וְהַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ לָאַ֣ט אֶת־פָּנָ֔יו וַיִּזְעַ֥ק הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ קֹ֣ול גָּדֹ֑ול בְּנִי֙ אַבְשָׁלֹ֔ום אַבְשָׁלֹ֖ום בְּנִ֥י בְנִֽי׃

4 καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἔκρυψεν τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔκραξεν ὁ βασιλεὺς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγων Υἱέ μου Ἀβεσσαλώμ, Ἀβεσσαλὼμ υἱέ μου. 4 καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἔκρυψε τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ.

5 And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, You have shamed this day the faces of all your servants, which this day have saved your life, and the lives of your sons and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines;

וַיָּבֹ֥א יֹואָ֛ב אֶל־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ הַבָּ֑יִת וַיֹּאמֶר֩ הֹבַ֨שְׁתָּ הַיֹּ֜ום אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י כָל־עֲבָדֶ֗יךָ הַֽמְמַלְּטִ֤ים אֶֽת־נַפְשְׁךָ֙ הַיֹּ֔ום וְאֵ֨ת נֶ֤פֶשׁ בָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ וּבְנֹתֶ֔יךָ וְנֶ֣פֶשׁ נָשֶׁ֔יךָ וְנֶ֖פֶשׁ פִּלַגְשֶֽׁיךָ׃

5 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Ἰωὰβ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ εἶπεν Κατῄσχυνας σήμερον τὸ πρόσωπον πάντων τῶν δούλων σου τῶν ἐξαιρουμένων σὲ σήμερον καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν τῶν υἱῶν σου καὶ τῶν θυγατέρων σου καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν τῶν γυναικῶν σου καὶ τῶν παλλακῶν σου 5 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Ἰωὰβ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ εἶπε· κατῄσχυνας σήμερον τὰ πρόσωπα πάντων τῶν δούλων σου τῶν ἐξαιρουμένων σε σήμερον καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν τῶν υἱῶν σου καὶ τῶν θυγατέρων σου καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν τῶν γυναικῶν σου καὶ τῶν παλλακῶν σου,

6 In that you love your enemies, and hate your friends. For you have declared this day, that you regard neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased you well.

לְאַֽהֲבָה֙ אֶת־שֹׂ֣נְאֶ֔יךָ וְלִשְׂנֹ֖א אֶת־אֹהֲבֶ֑יךָ כִּ֣י ׀ הִגַּ֣דְתָּ הַיֹּ֗ום כִּ֣י אֵ֤ין לְךָ֙ שָׂרִ֣ים וַעֲבָדִ֔ים כִּ֣י ׀ יָדַ֣עְתִּי הַיֹּ֗ום כִּ֠י אַבְשָׁלֹ֥ום חַי֙ וְכֻלָּ֤נוּ הַיֹּום֙ מֵתִ֔ים כִּי־אָ֖ז יָשָׁ֥ר בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃

6 τοῦ ἀγαπᾶν τοὺς μισοῦντάς σὲ καὶ μισεῖν τοὺς ἀγαπῶντάς σὲ καὶ ἀνήγγειλας σήμερον ὅτι οὔκ εἰσιν οἱ ἄρχοντές σου οὐδὲ παῖδες, ὅτι ἔγνωκα σήμερον ὅτι εἰ Ἀβεσσαλὼμ ἔζη πάντες ἡμεῖς σήμερον νεκροί, ὅτι τότε τὸ εὐθὲς ἦν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου· 6 τοῦ ἀγαπᾶν τοὺς μισοῦντάς σε καὶ μισεῖν τοὺς ἀγαπῶντάς σε καὶ ἀνήγγειλας σήμερον ὅτι οὐκ εἰσὶν οἱ ἄρχοντές σου, οὐδὲ παῖδες· ὅτι ἔγνωκα σήμερον ὅτι εἰ Ἀβεσσαλὼμ ἔζη, πάντες ἡμεῖς σήμερον νεκροί, ὅτι τότε τὸ εὐθὲς ἦν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου.

7 Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto your servants: for I swear by the LORD, if you don’t go forth, there won’t tarry one with you this night: and that will be worse unto you than all the evil that befell you from your youth until now.

וְעַתָּה֙ ק֣וּם צֵ֔א וְדַבֵּ֖ר עַל־לֵ֣ב עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ כִּי֩ בַיהוָ֨ה נִשְׁבַּ֜עְתִּי כִּי־אֵינְךָ֣ יֹוצֵ֗א אִם־יָלִ֨ין אִ֤ישׁ אִתְּךָ֙ הַלַּ֔יְלָה וְרָעָ֧ה לְךָ֣ זֹ֗את מִכָּל־הָרָעָה֙ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֣אָה עָלֶ֔יךָ מִנְּעֻרֶ֖יךָ עַד־עָֽתָּה׃

7 καὶ νῦν ἀναστὰς ἔξελθε καὶ λάλησον εἰς τὴν καρδίαν τῶν δούλων σου, ὅτι ἐν κυρίῳ ὤμοσα ὅτι εἰ μὴ ἐκπορεύσῃ σήμερον, εἰ αὐλισθήσεται ἀνὴρ μετὰ σοῦ τὴν νύκτα ταύτην· καὶ ἐπίγνωθι σεαυτῷ καὶ κακόν σοί τοῦτο ὑπὲρ πᾶν τὸ κακὸν τὸ ἐπελθόν σοί ἐκ νεότητός σου ἕως τοῦ νῦν. 7 καὶ νῦν ἀναστὰς ἔξελθε καὶ λάλησον εἰς τὴν καρδίαν τῶν δούλων σου, ὅτι ἐν Κυρίῳ ὠμόσαμεν ὅτι εἰ μὴ ἐκπορεύσῃ σήμερον, εἰ αὐλισθήσεται ἀνὴρ μετὰ σοῦ τὴν νύκτα ταύτην· καὶ ἐπίγνωθι σεαυτῷ καὶ κακόν σοι τοῦτο ὑπὲρ πᾶν τὸ κακὸν τὸ ἐπελθόν σοι ἐκ νεότητός σου ἕως τοῦ νῦν.

David Restored as King

8 Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king does sit in the gate. And all the people came before the king: for Israēl had fled every man to his tent.

וַיָּ֥קָם הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב בַּשָּׁ֑עַר וּֽלְכָל־הָעָ֞ם הִגִּ֣ידוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הִנֵּ֤ה הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ יֹושֵׁ֣ב בַּשַּׁ֔עַר וַיָּבֹ֤א כָל־הָעָם֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל נָ֖ס אִ֥ישׁ לְאֹהָלָֽיו׃

8 καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐν τῇ πύλῃ, καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἀνήγγειλαν λέγοντες Ἰδοὺ ὁ βασιλεὺς κάθηται ἐν τῇ πύλῃ· καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πᾶς ὁ λαὸς κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ βασιλέως.
Καὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἔφυγεν ἀνὴρ εἰς τὰ σκηνώματα αὐτοῦ. 		8 καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐν τῇ πύλῃ, καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἀνήγγειλαν λέγοντες· ἰδοὺ ὁ βασιλεὺς κάθηται ἐν τῇ πύλῃ· καὶ εἰσῆλθε πᾶς ὁ λαὸς κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ βασιλέως ἐπὶ τὴν πύλην.
καὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἔφυγεν ἀνὴρ εἰς τὰ σκηνώματα αὐτοῦ.

וַיְהִ֤י כָל־הָעָם֙ נָדֹ֔ון בְּכָל־שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ הִצִּילָ֣נוּ ׀ מִכַּ֣ף אֹיְבֵ֗ינוּ וְה֤וּא מִלְּטָ֙נוּ֙ מִכַּ֣ף פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וְעַתָּ֛ה בָּרַ֥ח מִן־הָאָ֖רֶץ מֵעַ֥ל אַבְשָׁלֹֽום׃

9 καὶ ἦν πᾶς ὁ λαὸς κρινόμενος ἐν πάσαις φυλαῖς Ἰσραὴλ λέγοντες Ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυὶδ ἐρρύσατο ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἡμῶν, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξείλατο ἡμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς ἀλλοφύλων, καὶ νῦν πέφευγεν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ Ἀβεσσαλώμ· 9 Καὶ ἦν πᾶς ὁ λαὸς κρινόμενος ἐν πάσαις φυλαῖς Ἰσραὴλ λέγοντες· ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυὶδ ἐρρύσατο ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἡμῶν, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξείλετο ἡμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς ἀλλοφύλων, καὶ νῦν πέφευγεν ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀπὸ Ἀβεσσαλώμ·

10 And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak you not a word of bringing the king back?

10 καὶ Ἀβεσσαλώμ, ὃν ἐχρίσαμεν ἐφ’ ἡμῶν, ἀπέθανεν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ, καὶ νῦν ἵνα τί ὑμεῖς κωφεύετε τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα;
καὶ τὸ ῥῆμα παντὸς Ἰσραὴλ ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα. 		10 καὶ Ἀβεσσαλώμ, ὃν ἐχρίσαμεν ἐφ’ ἡμῶν, ἀπέθανεν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ, καὶ νῦν ἱνατί ὑμεῖς κωφεύετε τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα;
καὶ τὸ ῥῆμα παντὸς Ἰσραὴλ ἦλθε πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα.

11 And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israēl is come to the king, even to his house.

וְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֗ד שָׁ֠לַח אֶל־צָדֹ֨וק וְאֶל־אֶבְיָתָ֥ר הַכֹּהֲנִים֮ לֵאמֹר֒ דַּבְּר֞וּ אֶל־זִקְנֵ֤י יְהוּדָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לָ֤מָּה תִֽהְיוּ֙ אַֽחֲרֹנִ֔ים לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־בֵּיתֹ֑ו וּדְבַר֙ כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בָּ֥א אֶל־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־בֵּיתֹֽו׃

11 καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυὶδ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς Σαδὼκ καὶ πρὸς Ἀβιαθὰρ τοὺς ἱερεῖς λέγων Λαλήσατε πρὸς τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους Ἰούδα λέγοντες Ἵνα τί γίνεσθε ἔσχατοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ;
καὶ λόγος παντὸς Ἰσραὴλ ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα. 		11 καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυὶδ ἀπέστειλε πρὸς Σαδὼκ καὶ πρὸς Ἀβιάθαρ τοὺς ἱερεῖς λέγων· λαλήσατε πρὸς τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους Ἰούδα λέγοντες· ἱνατί γίνεσθε ἔσχατοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ;

אַחַ֣י אַתֶּ֔ם עַצְמִ֥י וּבְשָׂרִ֖י אַתֶּ֑ם וְלָ֧מָּה תִהְי֛וּ אַחֲרֹנִ֖ים לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

12 ἀδελφοί μου ὑμεῖς, ὀστᾶ μου καὶ σάρκες μου ὑμεῖς, καὶ ἵνα τί γίνεσθε ἔσχατοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ; 12 ἀδελφοί μου ὑμεῖς, ὀστᾶ μου καὶ σάρκες μου ὑμεῖς, ἱνατί γίνεσθε ἔσχατοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ;

13 And say you to Amasa, Are you not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if you isn’t captain of the army before me continually in the room of Joab.

וְלַֽעֲמָשָׂא֙ תֹּֽמְר֔וּ הֲלֹ֛וא עַצְמִ֥י וּבְשָׂרִ֖י אָ֑תָּה כֹּ֣ה יַֽעֲשֶׂה־לִּ֤י אֱלֹהִים֙ וְכֹ֣ה יֹוסִ֔יף אִם־לֹ֠א שַׂר־צָבָ֞א תִּהְיֶ֧ה לְפָנַ֛י כָּל־הַיָּמִ֖ים תַּ֥חַת יֹואָֽב׃

13 καὶ τῷ Ἀμεσσαῒ ἐρεῖτε Οὐχὶ ὀστοῦν μου καὶ σάρξ μου σύ;
καὶ νῦν τάδε ποιήσαι μοι ὁ θεὸς καὶ τάδε προσθείη, εἰ μὴ ἄρχων δυνάμεως ἔσῃ ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας ἀντὶ Ἰωάβ. 		13 καὶ τῷ Ἀμεσσαῒ ἐρεῖτε· οὐχὶ ὀστοῦν μου καὶ σάρξ μου σύ;
καὶ νῦν τάδε ποιήσαι μοι ὁ Θεὸς καὶ τάδε προσθείη, εἰ μὴ ἄρχων δυνάμεως ἔσῃ ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας ἀντὶ Ἰωάβ.

וַיְמַהֵ֗ר שִׁמְעִ֤י בֶן־גֵּרָא֙ בֶּן־הַיְמִינִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר מִבַּֽחוּרִ֑ים וַיֵּ֙רֶד֙ עִם־אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה לִקְרַ֖את הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ דָּוִֽד׃

16 καὶ ἐτάχυνεν Σεμεῒ υἱὸς Γηρὰ υἱοῦ τοῦ Ἰεμενὶ ἐκ Βαουρὶμ καὶ κατέβη μετὰ ἀνδρὸς Ἰούδα εἰς ἀπαντὴν τοῦ βασιλέως Δαυὶδ 16 καὶ ἐτάχυνε Σεμεῒ υἱὸς Γηρὰ υἱοῦ τοῦ Ἰεμινὶ ἐκ Βαουρὶμ καὶ κατέβη μετὰ ἀνδρὸς Ἰούδα εἰς ἀπαντὴν τοῦ βασιλέως Δαυὶδ

17 καὶ χίλιοι ἄνδρες μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ Βενιαμὶν καὶ Σιβὰ τὸ παιδάριον τοῦ οἴκου Σαοὺλ καὶ δέκα πέντε υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἴκοσι δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ κατεύθυναν τὸν Ἰορδάνην ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ βασιλέως 17 καὶ χίλιοι ἄνδρες μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ Βενιαμὶν καὶ Σιβὰ τὸ παιδάριον τοῦ οἴκου Σαοὺλ καὶ πεντεκαίδεκα υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἴκοσι δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ κατεύθυναν τὸν Ἰορδάνην ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ βασιλέως

וְעָבְרָ֣ה הָעֲבָרָ֗ה לַֽעֲבִיר֙ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְלַעֲשֹׂ֥ות הַטֹּ֖וב וְשִׁמְעִ֣י בֶן־גֵּרָ֗א נָפַל֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ בְּעָבְרֹ֖ו בַּיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

18 καὶ ἐλειτούργησαν ἐλειτούργησαν τὴν λειτουργίαν τοῦ διαβιβάσαι τὸν βασιλέα, καὶ διέβη ἡ διάβασις ἐξεγεῖραι τὸν οἶκον τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τοῦ ποιῆσαι τὸ εὐθὲς ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ.

19 And said unto the king, Don’t let my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do you remember what your servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

19 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Μὴ διαλογισάσθω ὁ κύριός μου ἀνομίαν καὶ μὴ μνησθῇς ὅσα ἠδίκησεν ὁ παῖς σου ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ᾗ ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐξεπορεύετο ἐξ Ἱερουσαλήμ, τοῦ θέσθαι τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ, 19 καὶ εἶπε πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα· μὴ δὴ λογισάσθω ὁ κύριός μου ἀνομίαν καὶ μὴ μνησθῇς ὅσα ἠδίκησεν ὁ παῖς σου ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, ᾗ ὁ κύριός μου ἐξεπορεύετο ἐξ Ἱερουσαλήμ, τοῦ θέσθαι τὸν βασιλέα εἰς τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ,

20 ὅτι ἔγνω ὁ δοῦλός σου ὅτι ἐγὼ ἥμαρτον, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἦλθον σήμερον πρότερος παντὸς οἴκου Ἰωσὴφ τοῦ καταβῆναι εἰς ἀπαντὴν τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως. 20 ὅτι ἔγνω ὁ δοῦλός σου ὅτι ἐγὼ ἥμαρτον, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἦλθον σήμερον πρότερος παντὸς Ἰσραὴλ καὶ οἴκου Ἰωσὴφ τοῦ καταβῆναί με εἰς ἀπαντὴν τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως.

21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’s anointed?

וַיַּ֨עַן אֲבִישַׁ֤י בֶּן־צְרוּיָה֙ וַיֹּ֔אמֶר הֲתַ֣חַת זֹ֔את לֹ֥א יוּמַ֖ת שִׁמְעִ֑י כִּ֥י קִלֵּ֖ל אֶת־מְשִׁ֥יחַ יְהוָֽה׃

21 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ἀβεσσὰ υἱὸς Σαρουίας καὶ εἶπεν Μὴ ἀντὶ τούτου οὐ θανατωθήσεται Σεμεΐ, ὅτι κατηράσατο τὸν χριστὸν κυρίου; 21 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ἀβεσσὰ υἱὸς Σαρουΐας καὶ εἶπε· μὴ ἀντὶ τούτου οὐ θανατωθήσεται Σεμεΐ, ὅτι κατηράσατο τὸν χριστὸν Κυρίου;

24 And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.

וּמְפִבֹ֙שֶׁת֙ בֶּן־שָׁא֔וּל יָרַ֖ד לִקְרַ֣את הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְלֹא־עָשָׂ֨ה רַגְלָ֜יו וְלֹא־עָשָׂ֣ה שְׂפָמֹ֗ו וְאֶת־בְּגָדָיו֙ לֹ֣א כִבֵּ֔ס לְמִן־הַיֹּום֙ לֶ֣כֶת הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ עַד־הַיֹּ֖ום אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥א בְשָׁלֹֽום׃

24 καὶ Μεμφιβοσθὲ υἱὸς Ἰωνάθαν υἱοῦ Σαοὺλ κατέβη εἰς ἀπαντὴν τοῦ βασιλέως· καὶ οὐκ ἐθεράπευσεν τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ οὐδὲ ὠνυχίσατο οὐδὲ ἐποίησεν τὸν μύστακα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔπλυνεν ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ἧς ἀπῆλθεν ὁ βασιλεύς, ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας, ἧς αὐτὸς παρεγένετο ἐν εἰρήνῃ. 24 καὶ Μεμφιβοσθὲ υἱὸς υἱοῦ Σαοὺλ κατέβη εἰς ἀπαντὴν τοῦ βασιλέως· καὶ οὐκ ἐθεράπευσε τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ, οὐδὲ ὠνυχίσατο, οὐδὲ ἐποίησε τὸν μύστακα αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀπέπλυνεν ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας, ἧς ἀπῆλθεν ὁ βασιλεύς, ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἧς αὐτὸς παρεγένετο ἐν εἰρήνῃ.

25 And it came to be, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Why didn’t go you with me, Mephibosheth?

וַיְהִ֛י כִּי־בָ֥א יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם לִקְרַ֣את הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לֹו֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לָ֛מָּה לֹא־הָלַ֥כְתָּ עִמִּ֖י מְפִיבֹֽשֶׁת׃

25 καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεύς Τί ὅτι οὐκ ἐπορεύθης μετ’ ἐμοῦ, Μεμφιβοσθέ; 25 καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ εἶπε αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεύς· τί ὅτι οὐκ ἐπορεύθης μετ’ ἐμοῦ, Μεμφιβοσθέ;

26 And he answered, My lord, Oh king, my servant deceived me: for your servant said, I will saddle me a donkey, that I may ride on it, and go to the king; because your servant is lame.

וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ עַבְדִּ֣י רִמָּ֑נִי כִּֽי־אָמַ֨ר עַבְדְּךָ֜ אֶחְבְּשָׁה־לִּי֩ הַחֲמֹ֨ור וְאֶרְכַּ֤ב עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ וְאֵלֵ֣ךְ אֶת־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ כִּ֥י פִסֵּ֖חַ עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃

26 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Μεμφιβοσθὲ Κύριέ μου βασιλεῦ, ὁ δοῦλός μου παρελογίσατό με, ὅτι εἶπεν ὁ παῖς σου αὐτῷ Ἐπίσαξόν μοι τὴν ὄνον καὶ ἐπιβῶ ἐπ’ αὐτὴν καὶ πορεύσομαι μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως ὅτι χωλὸς ὁ δοῦλός σου· 26 καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτὸν Μεμφιβοσθέ· κύριέ μου βασιλεῦ, ὁ δοῦλός μου παρελογίσατό με, ὅτι εἶπε ὁ παῖς σου αὐτῷ· ἐπίσαξόν μοι τὴν ὄνον καὶ ἐπιβῶ ἐπ’ αὐτὴν καὶ πορεύσομαι μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως, ὅτι χωλὸς ὁ δοῦλός σου·

וַיְרַגֵּ֣ל בְּעַבְדְּךָ֔ אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֖י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַאדֹנִ֤י הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ כְּמַלְאַ֣ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַעֲשֵׂ֥ה הַטֹּ֖וב בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃

27 καὶ μεθώδευσεν ἐν τῷ δούλῳ σου πρὸς τὸν κύριόν μου τὸν βασιλέα, καὶ ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς ὡς ἄγγελος τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ ποίησον τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου· 27 καὶ μεθώδευσεν ἐν τῷ δούλῳ σου πρὸς τὸν κύριόν μου τὸν βασιλέα, καὶ ὁ κύριός μου ὁ βασιλεὺς ὡς ἄγγελος τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ ποίησον τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου·

28 For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet did you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the king?

כִּי֩ לֹ֨א הָיָ֜ה כָּל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֗י כִּ֤י אִם־אַנְשֵׁי־מָ֙וֶת֙ לַאדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַתָּ֙שֶׁת֙ אֶֽת־עַבְדְּךָ֔ בְּאֹכְלֵ֖י שֻׁלְחָנֶ֑ךָ וּמַה־יֶּשׁ־לִ֥י עֹוד֙ צְדָקָ֔ה וְלִזְעֹ֥ק עֹ֖וד אֶל־הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

28 ὅτι οὐκ ἦν πᾶς ὁ οἶκος τοῦ πατρός μου ἀλλ’ ἢ ὅτι ἄνδρες θανάτου τῷ κυρίῳ μου τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ ἔθηκας τὸν δοῦλόν σου ἐν τοῖς ἐσθίουσιν τὴν τράπεζάν σου· καὶ τί ἐστίν μοι ἔτι δικαίωμα καὶ τοῦ κεκραγέναι με ἔτι πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα; 28 ὅτι οὐκ ἦν πᾶς ὁ οἶκος τοῦ πατρός μου, ἀλλ’ ἢ ὅτι ἄνδρες θανάτου τῷ κυρίῳ μου τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ ἔθηκας τὸν δοῦλόν σου ἐν τοῖς ἐσθίουσι τὴν τράπεζάν σου· καὶ τί ἔστι μοι ἔτι δικαίωμα καὶ τοῦ κεκραγέναι με ἔτι πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα;

29 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεύς Ἵνα τί λαλεῖς ἔτι τοὺς λόγους σου;

וּבַרְזִלַּי֙ הַגִּלְעָדִ֔י יָרַ֖ד מֵרֹגְלִ֑ים וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ר אֶת־הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן לְשַׁלְּחֹ֖ו אֶת־

33 And the king said unto Barzillai, Come you over with me, and I will feed you with me in Jerusalem.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־בַּרְזִלָּ֑י אַתָּה֙ עֲבֹ֣ר אִתִּ֔י וְכִלְכַּלְתִּ֥י אֹתְךָ֛ עִמָּדִ֖י בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

33 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Βερζελλὶ σὺ διαβήσῃ μετ’ ἐμοῦ, καὶ διαθρέψω τὸ γῆράς σου μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ. 33 καὶ εἶπε ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Βερζελλί· σὺ διαβήσῃ μετ’ ἐμοῦ, καὶ διαθρέψω τὸ γῆράς σου μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ.

35 I am this day80 years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? therefore then should your servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?

36 ὡς βραχὺ διαβήσεται ὁ δοῦλός σου τὸν Ἰορδάνην μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως· καὶ ἵνα τί ἀνταποδίδωσίν μοι ὁ βασιλεὺς τὴν ἀνταπόδοσιν ταύτην; 36 ὡς βραχὺ διαβήσεται ὁ δοῦλός σου τὸν Ἰορδάνην μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως· καὶ ἱνατί ἀνταποδίδωσί μοι ὁ βασιλεὺς τὴν ἀνταπόδοσιν ταύτην;

37 Let your servant, I pray you, turn back again, that I may die in my own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto you.

37 καθισάτω δὴ ὁ δοῦλός σου καὶ ἀποθανοῦμαι ἐν τῇ πόλει μου παρὰ τῷ τάφῳ τοῦ πατρός μου καὶ τῆς μητρός μου· καὶ ἰδοὺ ὁ δοῦλός σου Χαμαὰμ διαβήσεται μετὰ τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ ποίησον αὐτῷ τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου. 37 καθισάτω δὴ ὁ δοῦλός σου καὶ ἀποθανοῦμαι ἐν τῇ πόλει μου παρὰ τῷ τάφῳ τοῦ πατρὸς μου καὶ τῆς μητρός μου· καὶ ἰδοὺ ὁ δοῦλός σου Χαμαὰμ διαβήσεται μετὰ τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ ποίησον αὐτῷ τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου.

38 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεύς Μετ’ ἐμοῦ διαβήτω Χαμαάμ, κἀγὼ ποιήσω αὐτῷ τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου καὶ πάντα, ὅσα ἐκλέξῃ ἐπ’ ἐμοί ποιήσω σοι. 38 καὶ εἶπε ὁ βασιλεύς· μετ’ ἐμοῦ διαβήτω Χαμαάμ, κἀγὼ ποιήσω αὐτῷ τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου καὶ πάντας, ὅσα ἄν ἐκλέξῃ ἐπ’ ἐμοί, ποιήσω σοι.

39 And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king was come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.

39 καὶ διέβη πᾶς ὁ λαὸς τὸν Ἰορδάνην, καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς διέβη· καὶ κατεφίλησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν Βερζελλὶ καὶ εὐλόγησεν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ. 39 καὶ διέβη πᾶς ὁ λαὸς τὸν Ἰορδάνην, καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς διέβη· καὶ κατεφίλησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν Βερζελλὶ καὶ εὐλόγησεν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ.

40 Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israēl.

וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ר הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ הַגִּלְגָּ֔לָה וְכִמְהָ֖ן עָבַ֣ר עִמֹּ֑ו וְכָל־עַ֤ם יְהוּדָה֙ אֶת־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְגַ֕ם חֲצִ֖י עַ֥ם יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

40 καὶ διέβη ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς Γάλγαλα, καὶ Χαμαὰμ διέβη μετ’ αὐτοῦ, καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς Ἰούδα διαβαίνοντες μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως καί γε τὸ ἥμισυ τοῦ λαοῦ Ἰσραήλ. 40 καὶ διέβη ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς Γάλγαλα, καὶ Χαμαὰμ διέβη μετ’ αὐτοῦ, καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς Ἰούδα διαβαίνοντες μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως καί γε τὸ ἥμισυ τοῦ λαοῦ Ἰσραήλ.

41 And, behold, all the men of Israēl came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan?

וְהִנֵּ֛ה כָּל־אִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בָּאִ֣ים אֶל־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֶל־הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ מַדּוּעַ֩ גְּנָב֨וּךָ אַחֵ֜ינוּ אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיַּעֲבִ֨רוּ אֶת־הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ וְאֶת־בֵּיתֹו֙ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן וְכָל־אַנְשֵׁ֥י דָוִ֖ד עִמֹּֽו׃

41 καὶ ἰδοὺ πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ παρεγένοντο πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ εἶπον πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Τί ὅτι ἔκλεψάν σὲ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ἡμῶν ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα καὶ διεβίβασαν τὸν βασιλέα καὶ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ τὸν Ἰορδάνην καὶ πάντες ἄνδρες Δαυὶδ μετ’ αὐτοῦ; 41 καὶ ἰδοὺ πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ παρεγένοντο πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ εἶπε πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα· τί ὅτι ἔκλεψάν σε οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ἡμῶν ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα καὶ διεβίβασαν τὸν βασιλέα καὶ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ τὸν Ἰορδάνην καὶ πάντες ἄνδρες Δαυὶδ μετ’ αὐτοῦ;

42 And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israēl, Because the king is near of kin to us: therefore then be angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or has he given us any gift?

42 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα πρὸς ἄνδρα Ἰσραὴλ καὶ εἶπαν Διότι ἐγγίζει πρός με ὁ βασιλεύς· καὶ ἵνα τί οὕτως ἐθυμώθης περὶ τοῦ λόγου τούτου;
μὴ βρώσει ἐφάγαμεν ἐκ τοῦ βασιλέως, ἢ δόμα ἔδωκεν ἢ ἄρσιν ἦρεν ἡμῖν; 		42 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ἰούδα πρὸς ἄνδρα Ἰσραὴλ καὶ εἶπαν· διότι ἐγγίζει πρός με ὁ βασιλεύς· καὶ ἱνατί οὕτως ἐθυμώθης περὶ τοῦ λόγου τούτου;
μὴ βρώσει ἐφάγαμεν ἐκ τοῦ βασιλέως, ἢ δόμα ἔδωκεν ἢ ἄρσιν ᾖρεν ἡμῖν;
42 And all the men of Jouda answered the men of Israēl, and said, Because the king is near of kin to us: and why were you thus angry concerning this matter? have we indeed eaten of the king’s food? or has he given us a gift, or has he sent us a portion? 42 And all the men of Jouda answered the men of Israēl, and said, Because the king is near of kin to us: and why were you thus angry concerning this matter? have we indeed eaten of the king’s food? or has he given us a gift, or has he sent us a portion?

43 And the men of Israēl answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than you: why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israēl.

וַיַּ֣עַן אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ אֶת־אִ֨ישׁ יְהוּדָ֜ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר עֶֽשֶׂר־יָדֹ֨ות לִ֣י בַמֶּלֶךְ֮ וְגַם־בְּדָוִד֮ אֲנִ֣י מִמְּךָ֒ וּמַדּ֙וּעַ֙ הֱקִלֹּתַ֔נִי וְלֹא־הָיָ֨ה דְבָרִ֥י רִאשֹׁ֛ון לִ֖י לְהָשִׁ֣יב אֶת־מַלְכִּ֑י וַיִּ֙קֶשׁ֙ דְּבַר־אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה מִדְּבַ֖ר אִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

43 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ τῷ ἀνδρὶ Ἰούδα καὶ εἶπεν δέκα χεῖρές μοι ἐν τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ πρωτότοκος ἐγὼ ἢ σύ, καί γε ἐν τῷ Δαυὶδ εἰμὶ ὑπὲρ σέ· καὶ ἵνα τί τοῦτο ὕβρισάς με καὶ οὐκ ἐλογίσθη ὁ λόγος μου πρῶτός μοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα ἐμοί;
καὶ ἐσκληρύνθη ὁ λόγος ἀνδρὸς Ἰούδα ὑπὲρ τὸν λόγον ἀνδρὸς Ἰσραήλ. 		43 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ἀνὴρ Ἰσραὴλ τῷ ἀνδρὶ Ἰούδα καὶ εἶπε· δέκα χεῖρές μοι ἐν τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ πρωτότοκος ἐγὼ ἢ σύ, καί γε ἐν τῷ Δαυίδ εἰμι ὑπὲρ σέ· καὶ ἱνατί τοῦτο ὕβρισάς με καὶ οὐκ ἐλογίσθη ὁ λόγος μου πρῶτός μοι τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα ἐμοί;
καὶ ἐσκληρύνθη ὁ λόγος ἀνδρὸς Ἰούδα ὑπὲρ τὸν λόγον ἀνδρὸς Ἰσραήλ.
43 And the men of Israēl answered the men of Jouda, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we are older than you, we have also an interest in David above you: and why have you thus insulted us, and why wasn’t our advice taken before that of Jouda, to bring back our king?
