Job Despairs of God’s Dealings
1 My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
| 1 Weary in my soul, I will pour my words with groans upon him: I will speak being restricted in the bitterness of my soul. | 1 Weary in my soul, I will pour my words with groans upon him: I will speak being restricted in the bitterness of my soul. |
2 I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; show me therefore you contend with me.
| 2 And I will say to the Lord, Do not teach me to be impious; and why have you thus judged me? | 2 And I will say to the Lord, Do not teach me to be impious; and why have you thus judged me? |
3 Is it good unto you who you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?
| 3 Is it good before you if I be unrighteous? for you have disowned the work of your hands, and attended to the counsel of the ungodly. | 3 Is it good before you if I be unrighteous? for you have disowned the work of your hands, and attended to the counsel of the ungodly. |
4 Have you eyes of flesh? or see you as man sees?
| 4 Or do you see as a mortal sees? or will you look as a man sees? | 4 Or do you see as a mortal sees? or will you look as a man sees? |
5 Are your days as the days of man? are your years as man’s days,
| 5 Or is your life human, or your years the years of a man, | 5 Or is your life human, or your years the years of a man, |
6 That you inquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin?
| 6 that you have inquired into my iniquity, and searched out my sins? | 6 that you have inquired into my iniquity, and searched out my sins? |
7 You know that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of your hand.
| 7 For you know that I haven’t committed iniquity: but who is he who can deliver out of your hands? | 7 For you know that I haven’t committed iniquity: but who is he who can deliver out of your hands? |
8 Your hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet you do destroy me.
| 8 Your hands have formed me and made me; afterwards you did change your mind, and smite me. | 8 Your hands have formed me and made me; afterwards you did change your mind, and smite me. |
9 Remember, I beseech you, that you have made me as the clay; and will you bring me into dust again?
| 9 Remember that you have made me as clay, and you do turn me again to earth. | 9 Remember that you have made me as clay, and you do turn me again to earth. |
10 Have you not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?
| 10 Have you not poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese? | 10 Have you not poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese? |
11 You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and have fenced me with bones and sinews.
| 11 And you did clothe me with skin and flesh, and frame me with bones and sinews. | 11 And you did clothe me with skin and flesh, and frame me with bones and sinews. |
12 You have granted me life and favour, and your visitation has preserved my spirit.
| 12 And you did bestow upon me life and mercy, and your oversight has preserved my spirit. | 12 And you did bestow upon me life and mercy, and your oversight has preserved my spirit. |
13 And these things have you hid in your heart: I know that this is with you.
| 13 Having these things in yourself, I know that you canst do all things; for nothing is impossible with you. | 13 Having these things in yourself, I know that you canst do all things; for nothing is impossible with you. |
14 If I sin, then you mark me, and you won’t acquit me from my iniquity.
| 14 And if I should sin, you watch me; and you haven’t cleared me from iniquity. | 14 And if I should sin, you watch me; and you haven’t cleared me from iniquity. |
15 If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see you my affliction;
| 15 Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me: and if I should be righteous, I cannot lift myself up, for I am full of dishonour. | 15 Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me: and if I should be righteous, I cannot lift myself up, for I am full of dishonour. |
16 For it increases. You hunt me as a fierce lion: and again you show yourself marvellous upon me.
| 16 For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again you have changed and are terribly destroying me; | 16 For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again you have changed and are terribly destroying me; |
17 You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.
| 17 renewing against me my torture: and you have dealt with me in great anger, and you have brought trials upon me. | 17 renewing against me my torture: and you have dealt with me in great anger, and you have brought trials upon me. |
18 Why then have you brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the spirit, and no eye had seen me!
| 18 Why then did you bring me out of the womb? and why did I not die, and no eye see me, | 18 Why then did you bring me out of the womb? and why did I not die, and no eye see me, |
19 I should have been as though I hadn’t been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.

20 Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,
