God Speaks to Job

1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

2 Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

מִ֤י זֶ֨ה ׀ מַחְשִׁ֖יךְ עֵצָ֥ה בְמִלִּ֗ין בְּֽלִי־דָֽעַת׃

2 Τίς οὗτος ὁ κρύπτων με βουλήν, συνέχων δὲ ῥήματα ἐν καρδίᾳ, ἐμὲ δὲ οἴεται κρύπτειν; 2 τίς οὗτος ὁ κρύπτων με βουλήν, συνέχων δὲ ῥήματα ἐν καρδίᾳ, ἐμὲ δὲ οἴεται κρύπτειν;

3 Gird up now your loins like a man; for I will demand of you, and answer me.

אֱזָר־נָ֣א כְגֶ֣בֶר חֲלָצֶ֑יךָ וְ֝אֶשְׁאָלְךָ֗ וְהֹודִיעֵֽנִי׃

3 ζῶσαι ὥσπερ ἀνὴρ τὴν ὀσφύν σου, ἐρωτήσω δέ σε, σὺ δέ μοι ἀποκρίθητι. 3 ζῶσαι ὥσπερ ἀνὴρ τὴν ὀσφύν σου, ἐρωτήσω δέ σε, σὺ δέ μοι ἀποκρίθητι.

4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if you have understanding.

אֵיפֹ֣ה הָ֭יִיתָ בְּיָסְדִי־אָ֑רֶץ הַ֝גֵּ֗ד אִם־יָדַ֥עְתָּ בִינָֽה׃

4 ποῦ ἦς ἐν τῷ θεμελιοῦν με τὴν γῆν;

מִי־שָׂ֣ם מְ֭מַדֶּיהָ כִּ֣י תֵדָ֑ע אֹ֤ו מִֽי־נָטָ֖ה עָלֶ֣יהָ קָּֽו׃

5 τίς ἔθετο τὰ μέτρα αὐτῆς, εἰ οἶδας;

עַל־מָ֭ה אֲדָנֶ֣יהָ הָטְבָּ֑עוּ אֹ֥ו מִֽי־יָ֝רָ֗ה אֶ֣בֶן פִּנָּתָֽהּ׃

6 ἐπὶ τίνος οἱ κρίκοι αὐτῆς πεπήγασιν;
τίς δέ ἐστιν ὁ βαλὼν λίθον γωνιαῖον ἐπ’ αὐτῆς; 		6 ἐπὶ τίνος οἱ κρίκοι αὐτῆς πεπήγασι;

7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

בְּרָן־יַ֭חַד כֹּ֣וכְבֵי בֹ֑קֶר וַ֝יָּרִ֗יעוּ כָּל־בְּנֵ֥י אֱלֹהִֽים׃

7 ὅτε ἐγενήθησαν ἄστρα, ᾔνεσάν με φωνῇ μεγάλῃ πάντες ἄγγελοί μου. 7 ὅτε ἐγενήθησαν ἄστρα, ᾔνεσάν με φωνῇ μεγάλῃ πάντες ἄγγελοί μου.

8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

וַיָּ֣סֶךְ בִּדְלָתַ֣יִם יָ֑ם בְּ֝גִיחֹ֗ו מֵרֶ֥חֶם יֵצֵֽא׃

8 ἔφραξα ἔφραξα δὲ θάλασσαν πύλαις, ὅτε ἐμαίμασσεν ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς αὐτῆς ἐκπορευομένη· 8 ἔφραξα δὲ θάλασσαν πύλαις, ὅτε ἐμαίμασσεν ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς αὐτῆς ἐκπορευομένη.

9 When I made the cloud the garment of it, and thick darkness a swaddling-band for it,

בְּשׂוּמִ֣י עָנָ֣ן לְבֻשֹׁ֑ו וַ֝עֲרָפֶ֗ל חֲתֻלָּתֹֽו׃

9 ἐθέμην δὲ αὐτῇ νέφος ἀμφίασιν, ὁμίχλῃ δὲ αὐτὴν ἐσπαργάνωσα· 9 ἐθέμην δὲ αὐτῇ νέφος ἀμφίασιν, ὁμίχλῃ δὲ αὐτὴν ἐσπαργάνωσα.

10 And broke up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

וָאֶשְׁבֹּ֣ר עָלָ֣יו חֻקִּ֑י וָֽ֝אָשִׂ֗ים בְּרִ֣יחַ וּדְלָתָֽיִם׃

10 ἐθέμην δὲ αὐτῇ ὅρια περιθεὶς κλεῖθρα καὶ πύλας· 10 ἐθέμην δὲ αὐτῇ ὅρια, περιθεὶς κλεῖθρα καὶ πύλας.

11 And said, Hitherto shall you come, but no further: and here shall your proud waves be stayed?

וָאֹמַ֗ר עַד־פֹּ֣ה תָ֭בֹוא וְלֹ֣א תֹסִ֑יף וּפֹ֥א־יָ֝שִׁ֗ית בִּגְאֹ֥ון גַּלֶּֽיךָ׃

11 εἶπα δὲ αὐτῇ Μέχρι τούτου ἐλεύσῃ καὶ οὐχ ὑπερβήσῃ, ἀλλ’ ἐν σεαυτῇ συντριβήσεταί σου τὰ κύματα.. 11 εἶπα δὲ αὐτῇ· μέχρι τούτου ἐλεύσῃ καὶ οὐχ ὑπερβήσῃ, ἀλλ’ ἐν σεαυτῇ συντριβήσεταί σου τὰ κύματα.

God’s Mighty Power

12 Have you commanded the morning since your days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;

הְֽ֭מִיָּמֶיךָ צִוִּ֣יתָ בֹּ֑קֶר מְקֹמֹֽו׃

12 ἦ ἐπὶ σου συντέταχα φέγγος πρωινόν, ἑωσφόρος δὲ εἶδεν τὴν ἑαυτοῦ τάξιν 12 ἦ ἐπὶ σοῦ συντέταχα φέγγος πρωϊνόν;

13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

לֶ֭אֱחֹז בְּכַנְפֹ֣ות הָאָ֑רֶץ וְיִנָּעֲר֖וּ רְשָׁעִ֣ים מִמֶּֽנָּה׃

13 ἐπιλαβέσθαι πτερύγων γῆς, ἐκτινάξαι ἀσεβεῖς ἐξ αὐτῆς; 13 ἐπιλαβέσθαι πτερύγων γῆς, ἐκτινάξαι ἀσεβεῖς ἐξ αὐτῆς;

14 It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

תִּ֭תְהַפֵּךְ כְּחֹ֣מֶר חֹותָ֑ם וְ֝יִֽתְיַצְּב֗וּ כְּמֹ֣ו לְבֽוּשׁ׃

14 ἦ σὺ λαβὼν γῆν πηλὸν ἔπλασας ζῷον καὶ λαλητὸν αὐτὸν ἔθου ἐπὶ γῆς; 14 ἦ σὺ λαβὼν γῆν πηλὸν ἔπλασας ζῷον καὶ λαλητὸν αὐτὸν ἔθου ἐπὶ γῆς;

15 And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the high arm shall be broken.

וְיִמָּנַ֣ע מֵרְשָׁעִ֣ים אֹורָ֑ם וּזְרֹ֥ועַ רָ֝מָ֗ה תִּשָּׁבֵֽר׃

15 ἀφεῖλας δὲ ἀπὸ ἀσεβῶν τὸ φῶς, βραχίονα δὲ ὑπερηφάνων συνέτριψας; 15 ἀφεῖλες δὲ ἀπὸ ἀσεβῶν τὸ φῶς, βραχίονα δὲ ὑπερηφάνων συνέτριψας;

16 Have you entered into the springs of the sea? or have you walked in the search of the depth?

הֲ֭בָאתָ עַד־נִבְכֵי־יָ֑ם וּבְחֵ֥קֶר תְּ֝הֹ֗ום הִתְהַלָּֽכְתָּ׃

16 ἦλθες δὲ ἐπὶ πηγὴν θαλάσσης, ἐν δὲ ἴχνεσιν ἀβύσσου περιεπάτησας; 16 ἦλθες δὲ ἐπὶ πηγὴν θαλάσσης, ἐν δὲ ἴχνεσιν ἀβύσσου περιεπάτησας;

17 Have the gates of death been opened unto you? or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?

הֲנִגְל֣וּ לְ֭ךָ שַׁעֲרֵי־מָ֑וֶת וְשַׁעֲרֵ֖י צַלְמָ֣וֶת תִּרְאֶֽה׃

17 ἀνοίγονται δέ σοί φόβῳ πύλαι θανάτου, πυλωροὶ δὲ ᾅδου ἰδόντες σὲ ἔπτηξαν; 17 ἀνοίγονταί δέ σοι φόβῳ πύλαι θανάτου, πυλωροὶ δὲ ᾅδου ἰδόντες σε ἔπτηξαν;

18 Have you perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if you know it all.

הִ֭תְבֹּנַנְתָּ עַד־רַחֲבֵי־אָ֑רֶץ הַ֝גֵּ֗ד אִם־יָדַ֥עְתָּ כֻלָּֽהּ׃

18 νενουθέτησαι δὲ τὸ εὖρος τῆς ὑπ’ οὐρανόν;
ἀνάγγειλον δή μοι πόση τίς ἐστιν. 		18 νενουθέτησαι δὲ τὸ εὖρος τῆς ὑπ’ οὐρανόν;
ἀνάγγειλον δή μοι, πόση τίς ἔστι;

19 Where is the way where light dwells? and as for darkness, where is the place of it,

אֵי־זֶ֣ה הַ֭דֶּרֶךְ יִשְׁכָּן־אֹ֑ור וְ֝חֹ֗שֶׁךְ אֵי־זֶ֥ה מְקֹמֹֽו׃

19 ποίᾳ δὲ γῇ αὐλίζεται τὸ φῶς, σκότους δὲ ποῖος ὁ τόπος; 19 ἐν ποίᾳ δὲ γῇ αὐλίζεται τὸ φῶς;

20 That you should take it to the bound of it, and that you should know the paths to the house of it?

כִּ֣י תִ֭קָּחֶנּוּ אֶל־גְּבוּלֹ֑ו וְכִֽי־תָ֝בִ֗ין נְתִיבֹ֥ות בֵּיתֹֽו׃

20 εἰ ἀγάγοις με εἰς ὅρια αὐτῶν;
εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπίστασαι τρίβους αὐτῶν; 		20 εἰ ἀγάγοις με εἰς ὅρια αὐτῶν;
εἰ δὲ καὶ ἐπίστασαι τρίβους αὐτῶν;

21 Know you it, because you were then born? or because the number of your days is great?

יָ֭דַעְתָּ כִּי־אָ֣ז תִּוָּלֵ֑ד וּמִסְפַּ֖ר יָמֶ֣יךָ רַבִּֽים׃

הֲ֭בָאתָ אֶל־אֹצְרֹ֣ות שָׁ֑לֶג וְאֹצְרֹ֖ות בָּרָ֣ד תִּרְאֶֽה׃

22 ἦλθες δὲ ἐπὶ θησαυροὺς χιόνος, θησαυροὺς δὲ χαλάζης ἑόρακας. 22 ἦλθες δὲ ἐπὶ θησαυροὺς χιόνος, θησαυροὺς δὲ χαλάζης ἑώρακας;

23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

אֲשֶׁר־חָשַׂ֥כְתִּי לְעֶת־צָ֑ר לְיֹ֥ום קְ֝רָ֗ב וּמִלְחָמָֽה׃

23 ἀπόκειται δέ σοί εἰς ὥραν ἐχθρῶν, εἰς ἡμέραν πολέμου καὶ μάχης. 23 ἀπόκειται δέ σοι εἰς ὥραν ἐχθρῶν εἰς ἡμέραν πολέμων καὶ μάχης;

24 By what way is the light parted, which scatters the east wind upon the earth?

אֵי־זֶ֣ה הַ֭דֶּרֶךְ יֵחָ֣לֶק אֹ֑ור יָפֵ֖ץ קָדִ֣ים עֲלֵי־אָֽרֶץ׃

24 πόθεν δὲ ἐκπορεύεται πάχνη ἢ διασκεδάννυται νότος εἰς τὴν ὑπ’ οὐρανόν; 24 πόθεν δὲ ἐκπορεύεται πάχνη ἢ διασκεδάννυται νότος εἰς τὴν ὑπ’ οὐρανόν;

25 Who has divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;

מִֽי־פִלַּ֣ג לַשֶּׁ֣טֶף תְּעָלָ֑ה וְ֝דֶ֗רֶךְ לַחֲזִ֥יז קֹלֹֽות׃

25 τίς δὲ ἡτοίμασεν ὑετῷ λάβρῳ ῥύσιν, ὁδὸν δὲ κυδοιμῶν 25 τίς δὲ ἡτοίμασεν ὑετῷ λάβρῳ ῥύσιν, ὁδὸν δὲ κυδοιμῶν

26 To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man;

לְ֭הַמְטִיר עַל־אֶ֣רֶץ לֹא־אִ֑ישׁ מִ֝דְבָּ֗ר לֹא־אָדָ֥ם בֹּֽו׃

26 τοῦ ὑετίσαι ἐπὶ γῆν οὗ οὐκ ἀνήρ, ἔρημον, οὗ οὐχ ὑπάρχει ἄνθρωπος ἐν αὐτῇ, 26 τοῦ ὑετίσαι ἐπὶ γῆν, οὗ οὐκ ἀνήρ, ἔρημον, οὗ οὐχ ὑπάρχει ἄνθρωπος ἐν αὐτῇ,

27 To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

לְהַשְׂבִּ֣יעַ שֹׁ֖אָה וּמְשֹׁאָ֑ה וּ֝לְהַצְמִ֗יחַ מֹ֣צָא דֶֽשֶׁא׃

27 τοῦ χορτάσαι ἄβατον καὶ ἀοίκητον καὶ τοῦ ἐκβλαστῆσαι ἔξοδον χλόης; 27 τοῦ χορτάσαι ἄβατον καὶ ἀοίκητον καὶ τοῦ ἐκβλαστῆσαι ἔξοδον χλόης;

הֲיֵשׁ־לַמָּטָ֥ר אָ֑ב אֹ֥ו מִי־הֹ֝ולִ֗יד אֶגְלֵי־טָֽל׃

28 τίς ἐστιν ὑετοῦ πατήρ;
τίς δέ ἐστιν ὁ τετοκὼς βώλους δρόσου; 		28 τίς ἐστιν ὑετοῦ πατήρ;

29 Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who has gendered it?

מִבֶּ֣טֶן מִ֭י יָצָ֣א הַקָּ֑רַח וּכְפֹ֥ר שָׁ֝מַיִם מִ֣י יְלָדֹֽו׃

29 ἐκ γαστρὸς δὲ τίνος ἐκπορεύεται ὁ κρύσταλλος;
πάχνην δὲ ἐν οὐρανῷ τίς τέτοκεν, 		29 ἐκ γαστρὸς δέ τίνος ἐκπορεύεται ὁ κρύσταλλος;
πάχνην δὲ ἐν οὐρανῷ τίς τέτοκεν,

30 The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

כָּ֭אֶבֶן מַ֣יִם יִתְחַבָּ֑אוּ וּפְנֵ֥י תְ֝הֹ֗ום יִתְלַכָּֽדוּ׃

30 ἣ καταβαίνει ὥσπερ ὕδωρ ῥέον;
πρόσωπον δὲ ἀβύσσου τίς ἔπηξεν; 		30 ἣ καταβαίνει ὥσπερ ὕδωρ ῥέον;
πρόσωπον ἀσεβοῦς τίς ἔπηξε;

31 Can you bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?

הַֽ֭תְקַשֵּׁר מַעֲדַנֹּ֣ות כִּימָ֑ה אֹֽו־מֹשְׁכֹ֖ות כְּסִ֣יל תְּפַתֵּֽחַ׃

31 συνῆκας δὲ δεσμὸν Πλειάδος καὶ φραγμὸν Ὀρίωνος ἤνοιξας; 31 συνῆκας δὲ δεσμὸν Πλειάδος καὶ φραγμὸν Ὠρίωνος ἤνοιξας;

הֲתֹצִ֣יא מַזָּרֹ֣ות בְּעִתֹּ֑ו וְ֝עַ֗יִשׁ עַל־בָּנֶ֥יהָ תַנְחֵֽם׃

32 ἦ διανοίξεις μαζουρὼθ ἐν καιρῷ αὐτοῦ καὶ Ἕσπερον ἐπὶ κόμης αὐτοῦ ἄξεις αὐτά; 32 ἦ διανοίξεις μαζουρὼθ ἐν καιρῷ αὐτοῦ καὶ Ἕσπερον ἐπὶ κόμης αὐτοῦ ἄξεις αὐτά;

33 Know you the ordinances of heaven? can you set the dominion of it in the earth?

הֲ֭יָדַעְתָּ חֻקֹּ֣ות שָׁמָ֑יִם אִם־תָּשִׂ֖ים מִשְׁטָרֹ֣ו בָאָֽרֶץ׃

33 ἐπίστασαι δὲ τροπὰς οὐρανοῦ ἢ τὰ ὑπ’ οὐρανὸν ὁμοθυμαδὸν γινόμενα; 33 ἐπίστασαι δὲ τροπὰς οὐρανοῦ ἢ τὰ ὑπ’ οὐρανὸν ὁμοθυμαδὸν γινόμενα;

34 Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?

הֲתָרִ֣ים לָעָ֣ב קֹולֶ֑ךָ וְֽשִׁפְעַת־מַ֥יִם תְּכַסֶּֽךָּ׃

34 καλέσεις δὲ νέφος φωνῇ, καὶ τρόμῳ ὕδατος λάβρῳ ὑπακούσεταί σου; 34 καλέσεις δὲ νέφος φωνῇ, καὶ τρόμῳ ὕδατος λάβρου ὑπακούσεταί σου;
34 And will you call a cloud with your voice, and will it obey you with a violent shower of much rain? 34 And will you call a cloud with your voice, and will it obey you with a violent shower of much rain?

35 Can you send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto you, Here we are?

הַֽתְשַׁלַּ֣ח בְּרָקִ֣ים וְיֵלֵ֑כוּ וְיֹאמְר֖וּ לְךָ֣ הִנֵּֽנוּ׃

35 ἀποστελεῖς δὲ κεραυνοὺς καὶ πορεύσονται;
ἐροῦσιν δέ σοί Τί ἐστιν; 		35 ἀποστελεῖς δὲ κεραυνοὺς καὶ πορεύσονται;
ἐροῦσι δέ σοι· τί ἔστι;

36 Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? or who has given understanding to the heart?

מִי־שָׁ֭ת בַּטֻּחֹ֣ות חָכְמָ֑ה אֹ֤ו מִֽי־נָתַ֖ן לַשֶּׂ֣כְוִי בִינָֽה׃

36 τίς δὲ ἔδωκεν γυναιξὶν ὑφάσματος σοφίαν ἢ ποικιλτικὴν ἐπιστήμην; 36 τίς δὲ ἔδωκε γυναιξὶν ὑφάσματος σοφίαν ἢ ποικιλτικὴν ἐπιστήμην;
36 And who has given to women skill in weaving, or knowledge of embroidery? 36 And who has given to women skill in weaving, or knowledge of embroidery?

37 Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,

מִֽי־יְסַפֵּ֣ר שְׁחָקִ֣ים בְּחָכְמָ֑ה וְנִבְלֵ֥י שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם מִ֣י יַשְׁכִּֽיב׃

37 τίς δὲ ὁ ἀριθμῶν νέφη σοφίᾳ, οὐρανὸν δὲ εἰς γῆν ἔκλινεν; 37 τίς δὲ ὁ ἀριθμῶν νέφη σοφίᾳ, οὐρανὸν δὲ εἰς γῆν ἔκλινε;
37 And who is he who numbers the clouds in wisdom, and has bowed the heaven down to the earth? 37 And who is he who numbers the clouds in wisdom, and has bowed the heaven down to the earth?

38 When the dust grows into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?

בְּצֶ֣קֶת עָ֭פָר לַמּוּצָ֑ק וּרְגָבִ֥ים יְדֻבָּֽקוּ׃

38 κέχυται δὲ ὥσπερ γῆ κονία, κεκόλληκα δὲ αὐτὸν ὥσπερ λίθῳ κύβον. 38 κέχυται δὲ ὥσπερ γῆ κονία, κεκόλληκα δὲ αὐτὸν ὥσπερ λίθῳ κύβον.

39 Will you hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,

הֲתָצ֣וּד לְלָבִ֣יא טָ֑רֶף וְחַיַּ֖ת כְּפִירִ֣ים תְּמַלֵּֽא׃

39 θηρεύσεις δὲ λέουσιν βοράν, ψυχὰς δὲ δρακόντων ἐμπλήσεις; 39 θηρεύσεις δὲ λέουσι βοράν, ψυχὰς δὲ δρακόντων ἐμπρήσεις;
39 And will you hunt a prey for the lions? and satisfy the desires of the serpents? 39 And will you hunt a prey for the lions? and satisfy the desires of the serpents?

40 When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?

כִּי־יָשֹׁ֥חוּ בַמְּעֹונֹ֑ות יֵשְׁב֖וּ בַסֻּכָּ֣ה לְמֹו־אָֽרֶב׃

40 δεδοίκασιν γὰρ ἐν κοίταις αὐτῶν, κάθηνται δὲ ἐν ὕλαις ἐνεδρεύοντες. 40 δεδοίκασι γὰρ ἐν κοίταις αὐτῶν, κάθηνται δὲ ἐν ὕλαις ἐνεδρεύοντες.
40 For they fear in their lairs, and lying in wait couch in the woods. 40 For they fear in their lairs, and lying in wait couch in the woods.

41 Who provides for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of food.

מִ֤י יָכִ֥ין לָעֹרֵ֗ב צֵ֫ידֹ֥ו כִּֽי־ אֶל־אֵ֣ל יְשַׁוֵּ֑עוּ יִ֝תְע֗וּ לִבְלִי־אֹֽכֶל׃

41 τίς δὲ ἡτοίμασεν κόρακι βοράν;
νεοσσοὶ γὰρ αὐτοῦ πρὸς κύριον κεκράγασιν πλανώμενοι τὰ σῖτα ζητοῦντες. 		41 τίς δὲ ἡτοίμασε κόρακι βοράν;
νεοσσοὶ γὰρ αὐτοῦ πρὸς Κύριον κεκράγασι πλανώμενοι, τὰ σῖτα ζητοῦντες.
