| 5:1 Περὶ δὲ τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν, ἀδελφοί, οὐ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι, | 1 Περὶ δὲ τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν, ἀδελφοί, οὐ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι· |
| Now as to the times and the epochs, brothers, you have no need of anything to be written to you. | But of the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that I write unto you. |
| 5:2 αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ὅτι ἡμέρα κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτὶ οὕτως ἔρχεται. | 2 αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ὅτι ἡμέρα κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτὶ οὕτως ἔρχεται· |
| For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. | For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. |
| 5:3 ὅταν λέγωσιν, Εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια, τότε αἰφνίδιος αὐτοῖς ἐφίσταται ὄλεθρος ὥσπερ ἡ ὠδὶν τῇ ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσῃ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκφύγωσιν. | 3 ὅταν γὰρ λέγωσιν, Εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια, τότε αἰφνίδιος αὐτοῖς ἐφίσταται ὄλεθρος, ὥσπερ ἡ ὠδὶν τῇ ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσῃ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκφύγωσιν. |
| While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labour pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. | For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. |
| 5:4 ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σκότει, ἵνα ἡ ἡμέρα ὑμᾶς ὡς κλέπτης καταλάβῃ· | 4 ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σκότει, ἵνα ἡ ἡμέρα ὑμᾶς ὡς κλέπτης καταλάβῃ· |
| But you, brothers, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; | But you, brothers, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. |

5:5 πάντες

ἐστε
καὶ

ἡμέρας. οὐκ ἐσμὲν νυκτὸς οὐδὲ σκότους· |
5 πάντες
ὑμεῖς
υἱοὶ
φωτός
ἐστε
καὶ
υἱοὶ
ἡμέρας· οὐκ ἐσμὲν νυκτὸς οὐδὲ σκότους. |
| for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; | You are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. |
| 5:6 ἄρα οὖν μὴ καθεύδωμεν ὡς οἱ λοιποὶ ἀλλὰ γρηγορῶμεν καὶ νήφωμεν. | 6 ἄρα οὖν μὴ καθεύδωμεν ὡς καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ, ἀλλὰ γρηγορῶμεν καὶ νήφωμεν. |
| so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. | Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. |
| 5:7 οἱ γὰρ καθεύδοντες νυκτὸς καθεύδουσιν καὶ οἱ μεθυσκόμενοι νυκτὸς μεθύουσιν· |

καθεύδουσι· καὶ οἱ μεθυσκόμενοι, νυκτὸς μεθύουσιν· |
| For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. | For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. |
| 5:8 ἡμεῖς δὲ ἡμέρας ὄντες νήφωμεν ἐνδυσάμενοι θώρακα πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ περικεφαλαίαν ἐλπίδα σωτηρίας· | 8 ἡμεῖς δὲ ἡμέρας ὄντες, νήφωμεν, ἐνδυσάμενοι θώρακα πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης, καὶ περικεφαλαίαν, ἐλπίδα σωτηρίας· |
| But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. | But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. |
| 5:9 ὅτι οὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλὰ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ | 9 ὅτι οὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴν, ἀλλ᾿ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας, διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, |
| For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, | For God has not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, |
| 5:10 τοῦ ἀποθανόντος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν, ἵνα εἴτε γρηγορῶμεν εἴτε καθεύδωμεν ἅμα σὺν αὐτῷ ζήσωμεν. | 10 τοῦ ἀποθανόντος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν, ἵνα εἴτε γρηγορῶμεν, εἴτε καθεύδωμεν, ἅμα σὺν αὐτῷ ζήσωμεν. |
| who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with him. | Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. |
| 5:11 Διὸ παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους καὶ οἰκοδομεῖτε εἷς τὸν ἕνα, καθὼς καὶ ποιεῖτε. | 11 Διὸ παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους, καὶ οἰκοδομεῖτε εἷς τὸν ἕνα, καθὼς καὶ ποιεῖτε. |
| Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing. | Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also you do. |
| 5:12 Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, εἰδέναι τοὺς κοπιῶντας ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ προϊσταμένους ὑμῶν ἐν κυρίῳ καὶ νουθετοῦντας ὑμᾶς | 12 Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, εἰδέναι τοὺς κοπιῶντας ἐν ὑμῖν, καὶ προϊσταμένους ὑμῶν ἐν κυρίῳ, καὶ νουθετοῦντας ὑμᾶς, |
| But we request of you, brothers, that you appreciate those who diligently labour among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, | And we beseech you, brothers, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; |

5:13 καὶ
ἡγεῖσθαι
αὐτοὺς
ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ
ἐν
ἀγάπῃ
διὰ
τὸ
ἔργον
αὐτῶν. εἰρηνεύετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς. |
13 καὶ
ἡγεῖσθαι
αὐτοὺς
ὑπὲρ
ἐκπερισσοῦ
ἐν
ἀγάπῃ,
διὰ
τὸ
ἔργον
αὐτῶν. εἰρηνεύετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς. |
| and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another. | And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves. |
| 5:14 παρακαλοῦμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, νουθετεῖτε τοὺς ἀτάκτους, παραμυθεῖσθε τοὺς ὀλιγοψύχους ἀντέχεσθε τῶν ἀσθενῶν, μακροθυμεῖτε πρὸς πάντας. | 14 παρακαλοῦμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, νουθετεῖτε τοὺς ἀτάκτους, παραμυθεῖσθε τοὺς ὀλιγοψύχους, ἀντέχεσθε τῶν ἀσθενῶν, μακροθυμεῖτε πρὸς πάντας. |
| We urge you, brothers, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. | Now we exhort you, brothers, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. |
| 5:15 ὁρᾶτε μή τις κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ τινι ἀποδῷ, ἀλλὰ πάντοτε τὸ ἀγαθὸν διώκετε [καὶ] εἰς ἀλλήλους καὶ εἰς πάντας. |

| See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. | See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. |
| 5:16 Πάντοτε χαίρετε, | 16 Πάντοτε χαίρετε, |
| Rejoice always; | Rejoice evermore. |
| 5:17 ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθε, | 17 ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθε. |
| pray without ceasing; | Pray without ceasing. |
| 5:18 ἐν παντὶ εὐχαριστεῖτε τοῦτο γὰρ θέλημα θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς. |

| in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. | In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. |
| 5:19 τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε, | 19 τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε. |
| Don’t quench the Spirit; | Quench not the Spirit. |
| 5:20 προφητείας μὴ ἐξουθενεῖτε, | 20 προφητείας μὴ ἐξουθενεῖτε. |
| don’t despise prophetic utterances. | Despise not prophesyings. |
| 5:21 πάντα δὲ δοκιμάζετε, τὸ καλὸν κατέχετε, |
21 πάντα
δοκιμάζετε· τὸ καλὸν κατέχετε, |
| But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; | Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. |
| 5:22 ἀπὸ παντὸς εἴδους πονηροῦ ἀπέχεσθε. | 22 ἀπὸ παντὸς εἴδους πονηροῦ ἀπέχεσθε. |
| abstain from every form of evil. | Abstain from all appearance of evil. |
| 5:23 Αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ θεὸς τῆς εἰρήνης ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς, καὶ ὁλόκληρον ὑμῶν τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἀμέμπτως ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τηρηθείη. |

ὁλοτελεῖς· καὶ ὁλόκληρον ὑμῶν τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἀμέμπτως ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τηρηθείη. |
| Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. | And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
| 5:24 πιστὸς ὁ καλῶν ὑμᾶς, ὃς καὶ ποιήσει. | 24 πιστὸς ὁ καλῶν ὑμᾶς, ὃς καὶ ποιήσει. |
| Faithful is he who calls you, and he also will bring it to pass. | Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. |
| 5:25 Ἀδελφοί, προσεύχεσθε [καὶ] περὶ ἡμῶν. | 25 Ἀδελφοί, προσεύχεσθε περὶ ἡμῶν. |
| Brothers, pray for us. | Brothers, pray for us. |
| 5:26 Ἀσπάσασθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς πάντας ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ. | 26 Ἀσπάσασθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς πάντας ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ. |
| Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. | Greet all the brothers with an holy kiss. |
| 5:27 Ἐνορκίζω ὑμᾶς τὸν κύριον ἀναγνωσθῆναι τὴν ἐπιστολὴν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς. | 27 ὁρκίζω ὑμᾶς τὸν κύριον, ἀναγνωσθῆναι τὴν ἐπιστολὴν πᾶσι τοῖς ἁγίοις ἀδελφοῖς· |
| I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. | I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brothers. |
| 5:28 Ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μεθ᾿ ὑμῶν. |
