Elihu Speaks for God
1 Therefore, Job, I pray you, hear my speeches, and listen to all my words.
| 1 However hear, Job, my words, and listen to my speech. | 1 However hear, Job, my words, and listen to my speech. |
2 Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue has spoken in my mouth.
| 2 For behold, I have opened my mouth, and my tongue has spoken. | 2 For behold, I have opened my mouth, and my tongue has spoken. |
3 My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.
| 3 My heart shall be found pure by my words; and the understanding of my lips shall meditate purity. | 3 My heart shall be found pure by my words; and the understanding of my lips shall meditate purity. |
4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life.
| 4 The Divine Spirit is what formed me, and the breath of the Almighty what teaches me. | 4 The Divine Spirit is what formed me, and the breath of the Almighty what teaches me. |
5 If you can answer me, set your words in order before me, stand up.
| 5 If you canst, give me an answer: wait therefore; stand against me, and I will stand against you. | 5 If you canst, give me an answer: wait therefore; stand against me, and I will stand against you. |
6 Behold, I am according to your wish in God’s stead: I also am formed out of the clay.
| 6 You are formed out of the clay as also I: we have been formed out of the same substance. | 6 You are formed out of the clay as also I: we have been formed out of the same substance. |
7 Behold, my terror shall not make you afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon you.
| 7 My fear shall not terrify you, neither shall my hand be heavy upon you. | 7 My fear shall not terrify you, neither shall my hand be heavy upon you. |
8 Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of your words, saying,
| 8 But you have said in my ears, (I have heard the voice of your words;) because you say, I am pure, not having sinned; | 8 But you have said in my ears, (I have heard the voice of your words;) because you say, I am pure, not having sinned; |
9 I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.
| 9 I am blameless, for I haven’t transgressed. | 9 I am blameless, for I haven’t transgressed. |
10 Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy,
| 10 Yet he has discovered a charge against me, and he has reckoned me as an adversary. | 10 Yet he has discovered a charge against me, and he has reckoned me as an adversary. |
11 He puts my feet in the stocks, he marks all my paths.
| 11 And he has put my foot in the stocks, and has watched all my ways. | 11 And he has put my foot in the stocks, and has watched all my ways. |
12 Behold, in this you are not just: I will answer you, that God is greater than man.

| 12 For how say you, I am righteous, yet he hasn’t listened to me? for he who is above mortals is eternal. | 12 For how say you, I am righteous, yet he hasn’t listened to me? for he who is above mortals is eternal. |
13 Why do you quarrel against him? for he gives not account of any of his matters.
| 13 But you say, Why hasn’t he heard every word of my cause? | 13 But you say, Why hasn’t he heard every word of my cause? |
14 For God speaks once, yes twice, yet man perceives it not.
| 14 For when the Lord speaks once, or a second time, | 14 For when the Lord speaks once, or a second time, |
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
| 15 sending a dream, or in the meditation of the night; (as when a dreadful alarm happens to fall upon men, in slumberings on the bed:) | 15 sending a dream, or in the meditation of the night; (as when a dreadful alarm happens to fall upon men, in slumberings on the bed:) |
16 Then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction,
| 16 then opens he the understanding of men: he scares them with such fearful visions: | 16 then opens he the understanding of men: he scares them with such fearful visions: |
17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
| 17 to turn a man from unrighteousness, and he delivers his body from a fall. | 17 to turn a man from unrighteousness, and he delivers his body from a fall. |
18 He keeps back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.
| 18 He spares also his soul from death, and suffers him not to fall in war. | 18 He spares also his soul from death, and suffers him not to fall in war. |
19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:
| 19 And again, he chastens him with sickness on his bed, and the multitude of his bones is benumbed. | 19 And again, he chastens him with sickness on his bed, and the multitude of his bones is benumbed. |
20 So that his life abhors bread, and his soul dainty food.
| 20 And he shall not be able to take any food, though his soul shall desire meat; | 20 And he shall not be able to take any food, though his soul shall desire meat; |
21 His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.
| 21 until his flesh shall be consumed, and he shall show his bones bare. | 21 until his flesh shall be consumed, and he shall show his bones bare. |
22 Yes, his soul draws near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.
| 22 His soul also draws near to death, and his life is in Hades. | 22 His soul also draws near to death, and his life is in Hades. |
23 If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among 1000, to show unto man his uprightness:
| 23 Though there should be a thousand messengers of death, not one of them shall wound him: if he should purpose in his heart to turn to the Lord, and declare to man his fault, and show his folly; | 23 Though there should be a thousand messengers of death, not one of them shall wound him: if he should purpose in his heart to turn to the Lord, and declare to man his fault, and show his folly; |
24 Then he is gracious unto him, and says, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.
| 24 he will support him, that he should not perish, and will restore his body as fresh plaster upon a wall; and he will fill his bones with morrow. | 24 he will support him, that he should not perish, and will restore his body as fresh plaster upon a wall; and he will fill his bones with morrow. |
25 His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth:
| 25 And he will make his flesh tender as that of a babe, and he will restore him among men in his full strength. | 25 And he will make his flesh tender as that of a babe, and he will restore him among men in his full strength. |
26 He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.
| 26 And he shall pray to the Lord, and his prayer shall be accepted of him; he shall enter with a cheerful countenance, with a full expression of praise: for he will render to men their due. | 26 And he shall pray to the Lord, and his prayer shall be accepted of him; he shall enter with a cheerful countenance, with a full expression of praise: for he will render to men their due. |
27 He looks upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted what was right, and it profited me not;
| 27 Even then a man shall blame himself, saying, What kind of things have I done? and he hasn’t punished me according to the full amount of my sins. | 27 Even then a man shall blame himself, saying, What kind of things have I done? and he hasn’t punished me according to the full amount of my sins. |
28 He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.
| 28 Deliver my soul, that it may not go to destruction, and my life shall see the light. | 28 Deliver my soul, that it may not go to destruction, and my life shall see the light. |
29 Lo, all these things works God frequently with man,
| 29 Behold, all these things, the Mighty One works in a threefold manner with a man. | 29 Behold, all these things, the Mighty One works in a threefold manner with a man. |
30 To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.

| 30 And he has delivered my soul from death, that my life may praise him in the light. | 30 And he has delivered my soul from death, that my life may praise him in the light. |
31 Mark well, Oh Job, listen to me: hold your peace, and I will speak.

| 31 Listen, Job, and hear me: be silent, and I will speak. | 31 Listen, Job, and hear me: be silent, and I will speak. |
32 If you have anything to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify you.

| 32 If you have words, answer me: speak, for I desire you to be justified. | 32 If you have words, answer me: speak, for I desire you to be justified. |
33 If not, listen to me: hold your peace, and I shall teach you wisdom.
