Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, he became hungry. Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
And the devil said to him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” And the devil said unto him, If you be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”[1] And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.[1]
And he led him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, showed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
And the devil said to him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give you, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.” If you therefore will worship me, all shall be yours.
Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”[2] And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get you behind me, Satan: for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.[2]
And he led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here; And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If you be the Son of God, cast yourself down from hence:
for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning You to guard You,’[3] For it is written, he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you:[3]
and, ‘On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”[4] And in their hands they shall bear you up, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone.[4]
And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”[5] And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, You shall not tempt the Lord your God.[5]
When the devil had finished every temptation, he left him until an opportune time. And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through all the surrounding district. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
And he began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and as was his custom, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. And he opened the book and found the place where it was written, And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. he has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
To proclaim the favourable year of the Lord.”[6] To proclaim the favourable year of the Lord.”[6]
And he closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
4:22 καὶ πάντες ἐμαρτύρουν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ἐπὶ τοῖς λόγοις τῆς χάριτος τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔλεγον, οὐχὶ υἱός ἐστιν Ἰωσὴφ οὗτος; 22 καὶ πάντες ἐμαρτύρουν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ἐπὶ τοῖς λόγοις τῆς χάριτος, τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔλεγον, οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν υἱὸς Ἰωσήφ;
And all were speaking well of him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from his lips; and they were saying, “Is this not Jōsēph's son?” And all bore him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Jōsēph's son?
And he said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard was done at Kapharnaoum, do here in your hometown as well.’” And he said unto them, You will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal yourself: whatsoever we have heard done in Kapernaoum, do also here in your country.
And he said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown. And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israēl in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land; But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israēl in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidōn, to a woman who was a widow. But unto none of them was Elias sent, except unto Sarepta, a city of Sidōn, unto a woman that was a widow.
And there were many lepers in Israēl in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” And many lepers were in Israēl in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian.
And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things; And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
and they got up and drove him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw him down the cliff. And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
But passing through their midst, he went his way. But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
And he came down to Kapharnaoum, a city of Galilee, and he was teaching them on the Sabbath; And came down to Kapernaoum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.
and they were amazed at his teaching, for his message was with authority. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,
4:34 ἔα, τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοὶ, Ἰησοῦ Ναζαρηνέ;
ἦλθες ἀπολέσαι ἡμᾶς;
34 λέγων, ἔα, τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοὶ, Ἰησοῦ Ναζαρηνέ;
ἦλθες ἀπολέσαι ἡμᾶς;
“Let us alone! What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? are you come to destroy us? I know you who you are; the Holy One of God.
But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, he came out of him without doing him any harm. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold your peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
4:36 καὶ ἐγένετο θάμβος ἐπὶ πάντας καὶ συνελάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους λέγοντες, τίς λόγος οὗτος ὅτι ἐν ἐξουσίᾳ καὶ δυνάμει ἐπιτάσσει τοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις πνεύμασιν καὶ ἐξέρχονται; 36 καὶ ἐγένετο θάμβος ἐπὶ πάντας, καὶ συνελάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους, λέγοντες, τίς λόγος οὗτος, ὅτι ἐν ἐξουσίᾳ καὶ δυνάμει ἐπιτάσσει τοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις πνεύμασι, καὶ ἐξέρχονται;
And amazement came upon them all, and they began talking with one another saying, “What is this message? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits and they come out.” And they were all amazed, and spoke among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.
And the report about him was spreading into every locality in the surrounding district. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
Then he got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simōn's home. Now Simōn's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him to help her. And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simōn's house. And Simōn's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
And standing over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and waited on them. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him; and laying his hands on each one of them, he was healing them. Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, he would not allow them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, You are Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for him, and came to him and tried to keep him from going away from them. And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
But he said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.” And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
So he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
