The People Confess Their Sin
1 Now on the 24th day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.
וּבְיֹום֩ עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֜ה לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַזֶּ֗ה נֶאֶסְפ֤וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּצֹ֣ום וּבְשַׂקִּ֔ים וַאֲדָמָ֖ה עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

4 Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.
וַיָּ֜קָם עַֽל־מַֽעֲלֵ֣ה הַלְוִיִּ֗ם יֵשׁ֨וּעַ וּבָנִ֜י קַדְמִיאֵ֧ל שְׁבַנְיָ֛ה בֻּנִּ֥י שֵׁרֵבְיָ֖ה בָּנִ֣י כְנָ֑נִי וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֙ בְּקֹ֣ול גָּדֹ֔ול אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ הַלְוִיִּ֡ם יֵשׁ֣וּעַ וְ֠קַדְמִיאֵל בָּנִ֨י חֲשַׁבְנְיָ֜ה שֵׁרֵֽבְיָ֤ה הֹֽודִיָּה֙ שְׁבַנְיָ֣ה פְתַֽחְיָ֔ה ק֗וּמוּ בָּרֲכוּ֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם מִן־הָעֹולָ֖ם עַד־הָעֹולָ֑ם וִיבָֽרְכוּ֙ שֵׁ֣ם כְּבֹודֶ֔ךָ וּמְרֹומַ֥ם עַל־כָּל־בְּרָכָ֖ה וּתְהִלָּֽה׃
| 5 καὶ εἴποσαν οἱ Λευῖται Ἰησοῦς καὶ Καδμιὴλ Ἀνάστητε εὐλογεῖτε τὸν κύριον θεὸν ὑμῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ αἰῶνος, καὶ ἕως τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ εὐλογήσουσιν ὄνομα δόξης σου καὶ ὑψώσουσιν ἐπὶ πάσῃ εὐλογίᾳ καὶ αἰνέσει. | 5 καὶ εἴποσαν οἱ Λευῖται Ἰησοῦς καὶ Καδμιήλ· ἀνάστητε, εὐλογεῖτε Κύριον τὸν Θεὸν ἡμῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ ἕως τοῦ αἰῶνος· καὶ εὐλογήσουσιν ὄνομα δόξης σου καὶ ὑψώσουσιν ἐπὶ πάσῃ εὐλογίᾳ καὶ αἰνέσει. |

| 6 καὶ εἶπεν Ἔσδρας σὺ εἶ αὐτὸς κύριος μόνος· σὺ ἐποίησας τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὸν οὐρανὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν στάσιν αὐτῶν, τὴν γῆν καὶ πάντα, ὅσα ἐστὶν ἐν αὐτῇ, τὰς θαλάσσας καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐταῖς, καὶ σὺ ζωοποιεῖς τὰ πάντα, καὶ σοί προσκυνοῦσιν αἱ στρατιαὶ τῶν οὐρανῶν. | 6 καὶ εἶπε Ἔσδρας· σὺ εἶ αὐτὸς Κύριος μόνος, σὺ ἐποίησας τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὸν οὐρανὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν στάσιν αὐτῶν, τὴν γῆν καὶ πάντας, ὅσα ἐστὶν ἐν αὐτῇ, τὰς θαλάσσας καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐταῖς, καὶ σὺ ζωοποιεῖς τὰ πάντας, καὶ σοί προσκυνοῦσιν αἱ στρατιαὶ τῶν οὐρανῶν. |

וּמָצָ֣אתָ אֶת־לְבָבֹו֮ נֶאֱמָ֣ן לְפָנֶיךָ֒ וְכָרֹ֨ות עִמֹּ֜ו הַבְּרִ֗ית לָתֵ֡ת אֶת־אֶרֶץ֩ הַכְּנַעֲנִ֨י הַחִתִּ֜י הָאֱמֹרִ֧י וְהַפְּרִזִּ֛י וְהַיְבוּסִ֥י וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֖י לָתֵ֣ת לְזַרְעֹ֑ו וַתָּ֙קֶם֙ אֶת־דְּבָרֶ֔יךָ כִּ֥י צַדִּ֖יק אָֽתָּה׃

וְהַיָּם֙ בָּקַ֣עְתָּ לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם וַיַּֽעַבְר֥וּ בְתֹוךְ־הַיָּ֖ם בַּיַּבָּשָׁ֑ה וְֽאֶת־רֹ֨דְפֵיהֶ֜ם הִשְׁלַ֧כְתָּ בִמְצֹולֹ֛ת כְּמֹו־אֶ֖בֶן בְּמַ֥יִם עַזִּֽים׃
| 11 καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν ἔρρηξας ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν, καὶ παρήλθοσαν ἐν μέσῳ τῆς θαλάσσης ἐν ξηρασίᾳ, καὶ τοὺς καταδιώξαντας αὐτοὺς ἔρριψας εἰς βυθὸν ὡσεὶ λίθον ἐν ὕδατι σφοδρῷ. | 11 καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν ἔρρηξας ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν, καὶ παρήλθοσαν ἐν μέσῳ τῆς θαλάσσης ἐν ξηρασίᾳ, καὶ τοὺς καταδιώξοντας αὐτοὺς ἔρριψας εἰς βυθὸν ὡσεὶ λίθον ἐν ὕδατι σφοδρῷ. |

| 12 καὶ ἐν στύλῳ νεφέλης ὡδήγησας αὐτοὺς ἡμέρας καὶ ἐν στύλῳ πυρὸς τὴν νύκτα τοῦ φωτίσαι αὐτοῖς τὴν ὁδόν, ἐν ᾗ πορεύσονται ἐν αὐτῇ. | 12 καὶ ἐν στύλῳ νεφέλης ὡδήγησας αὐτοὺς ἡμέρας καὶ ἐν στύλῳ πυρὸς τὴν νύκτα τοῦ φωτίσαι αὐτοῖς τὴν ὁδόν, ἐν ᾗ πορεύσονται ἐν αὐτῇ. |

16 But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and didn’t listen to your commandments,

29 And testified against them, that you might bring them again unto your law: yet they dealt proudly, and didn’t listen unto your commandments, but sinned against your judgments, (which if a man does, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.

30 Yet many years did you forbear them, and testified against them by your spirit in your prophets: yet they wouldn’t give ear: therefore you gave them into the hand of the people of the lands.

32 Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keeps covenant and mercy, don’t let all the trouble seem little before you, that has come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.

33 However you are just in all that is brought upon us; for you have done right, but we have done wickedly:
