Job Says His Friends’ Proverbs Are Ashes
1 Lo, my eye has seen all this, my ear has heard and understood it.
| 1 Behold, my eye has seen these things, and my ear has heard them. | 1 Behold, my eye has seen these things, and my ear has heard them. |
2 What you know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you.
| 2 And I know all that you too know; and I haven’t less understanding than you. | 2 And I know all that you too know; and I haven’t less understanding than you. |
3 Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.
| 3 Nevertheless I will speak to the Lord, and I will reason before him, if he will. | 3 Nevertheless I will speak to the Lord, and I will reason before him, if he will. |
4 But you are forgers of lies, you are all physicians of no value.
| 4 But you are all bad physicians, and healers of diseases. | 4 But you are all bad physicians, and healers of diseases. |
5 Oh that you would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.
| 5 But would that you were silent, and it would be wisdom to you in the end. | 5 But would that you were silent, and it would be wisdom to you in the end. |
6 Hear now my reasoning, and listen to the pleadings of my lips.
| 6 But hear you the reasoning of my mouth, and attend to the judgment of my lips. | 6 But hear you the reasoning of my mouth, and attend to the judgment of my lips. |
7 Will you speak wickedly for God? and talk craftily for him?
| 7 Do you not speak before the Lord, and utter deceit before him? | 7 Do you not speak before the Lord, and utter deceit before him? |
8 Will you accept his person? will you contend for God?

| 8 Or will you draw back? no do, you yourselves be judges. | 8 Or will you draw back? no do, you yourselves be judges. |
9 Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocks another, do you so mock him?
| 9 For it were well if he would thoroughly search you: for though doing all things in your power you should attach yourselves to him, | 9 For it were well if he would thoroughly search you: for though doing all things in your power you should attach yourselves to him, |
10 He will surely reprove you, if you do secretly accept persons.
| 10 he won’t reprove you at all the less: but if moreover you should secretly respect persons, | 10 he won’t reprove you at all the less: but if moreover you should secretly respect persons, |
11 Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you?
| 11 shall not his whirlpool s weep you round, and terror from him fall upon you? | 11 shall not his whirlpool s weep you round, and terror from him fall upon you? |
12 Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.
| 12 And your glorying shall prove in the end to you like ashes, and your body like a body of clay. | 12 And your glorying shall prove in the end to you like ashes, and your body like a body of clay. |
Job Is Sure He Will Be Vindicated
13 Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.
| 13 Be silent, that I may speak, and cease from my anger, | 13 Be silent, that I may speak, and cease from my anger, |
14 Why do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand?

| 14 while I may take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand. | 14 while I may take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand. |
15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain my own ways before him.

| 15 Though the Mighty One should lay hand upon me, since he has begun, verily I will speak, and plead before him. | 15 Though the Mighty One should lay hand upon me, since he has begun, verily I will speak, and plead before him. |
16 He also shall be my salvation: for a hypocrite shall not come before him.

| 16 And this shall turn to me for salvation; for fraud shall have no entrance before him. | 16 And this shall turn to me for salvation; for fraud shall have no entrance before him. |
17 Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears.

| 17 Hear, hear you my words, for I will declare in your hearing. | 17 Hear, hear you my words, for I will declare in your hearing. |
18 Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified.

| 18 Behold, I am near my judgment: I know that I shall appear evidently just. | 18 Behold, I am near my judgment: I know that I shall appear evidently just. |
19 Who is he who will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the spirit.

| 19 For who is he who shall plead with me, that I should now be silent, and expire? | 19 For who is he who shall plead with me, that I should now be silent, and expire? |
20 Only don’t two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from you.

| 21 Withhold your hand from me: and don’t let your fear terrify me. | 21 Withhold your hand from me: and don’t let your fear terrify me. |
22 Then call you, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer me.

| 22 Then shall you call, and I will listen to you: or you shall speak, and I will give you an answer. | 22 Then shall you call, and I will listen to you: or you shall speak, and I will give you an answer. |
