NAS | TextRec |

On one of the days while he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted him, | And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, |
and they spoke, saying to him, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?” | And spoke unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest you these things? or who is he that gave you this authority? |
Jesus answered and said to them, “I will also ask you a question, and you tell me: | And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: |
Was the baptism of Jōhn from heaven or from men?” | The baptism of Jōhn, was it from heaven, or of men? |
They reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ | And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed you him not? |
But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that Jōhn was a prophet.” | But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that Jōhn was a prophet. |
So they answered that they didn’t know where it came from. | And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was. |
And Jesus said to them, “Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” | And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. |

And he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time. | Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. |

At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him some of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. | And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. |
20:11 καὶ

And he proceeded to send another slave; and they beat him also and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty-handed. | And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated him shamefully, and sent him away empty. |
20:12 καὶ

And he proceeded to send a third; and this one also they wounded and cast out. | And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out. |
δὲ
ὁ
τοῦ
τί

The owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ | Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him. |

But when the vine-growers saw him, they reasoned with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’ | But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. |
20:15 καὶ

So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them? | So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them? |

He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard it, they said, “May it never be!” | He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid. |
20:17 ὁ

But Jesus looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected, This became the chief corner stone’? | And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? |

Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.” | Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. |

The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that he spoke this parable against them. | And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. |
So they watched him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch him in some statement, so that they could deliver him to the rule and the authority of the governor. | And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. |
They questioned him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. | And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that you sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest you the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly: |
Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” | Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? |
But he detected their trickery and said to them, | But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt you me? |
μοι
“Show me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar's.” | Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription has it? They answered and said, Caesar's. |
And he said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” | And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's. |

And they were unable to catch him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at his answer, they became silent. | And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. |
Now there came to him some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection), | Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, |
and they questioned him, saying, “Teacher, Mōsēs wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should marry the wife and raise up children to his brother. | Saying, Master, Mōses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. |
οὖν
Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; | There were therefore seven brothers: and the first took a wife, and died without children. |
and the second | And the second took her to wife, and he died childless. |
and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children. | And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. |
Finally the woman died also. | Last of all the woman died also. |
20:33 ἡ
οὖν
ἐν
τῇ
In the resurrection therefore, which one's wife will she be? For all seven had married her.” | Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife. |
Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, | And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: |
but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; | But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: |
for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. | Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. |
But that the dead are raised, even Mōsēs showed, in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacōb. | Now that the dead are raised, even Mōses showed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacōb. |
Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to him.” | For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him. |
Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” | Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, you have well said. |
For they didn’t have courage to question him any longer about anything. | And after that they durst not ask him any question at all. |
Then he said to them, “How is it that they say the Christ is David's son? | And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son? |
For David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, | And David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit you on my right hand, |
Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’ | Till I make your enemies your footstool. |
Therefore David calls him ‘Lord,’ and how is he his son?” | David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son? |
And while all the people were listening, he said to the disciples, | Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, |
“Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honour at banquets, | Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; |

who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.” | Which devour widows' houses, and for a show make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation. |
