But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. | But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: |
Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. | That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. |
Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behaviour, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, | The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; |
so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, | That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, |
to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonoured. | To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. |
Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; | Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. |
in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, | In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, |
sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us. | Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. |
Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, | Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; |
not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in every respect. | Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. |
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, | For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, |
instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, | Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; |
looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Christ Jesus, | Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; |
who gave himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good deeds. | Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. |

καὶ

These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you. | These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. |

NAS | TextRec |
---|---|
Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, | Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, |
to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men. | To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. |
For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. | For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. |
But when the kindness of God our Saviour and his love for mankind appeared, | But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, |
He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to his mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, | Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; |
whom he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, | Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; |
so that being justified by his grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. | That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. |
3:8
ὁ

This is a trustworthy statement; and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, so that those who have believed God will be careful to engage in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men. | This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. |

But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. | But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. |
Reject a factious man after a first and second warning, | A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; |
knowing that such a man is perverted and is sinning, being self-condemned. | Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself. |

When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. | When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter. |
Diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way so that nothing is lacking for them. | Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them. |
Our people must also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful. | And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. |
