Chapter 2

You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. | Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. |
The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. | And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. |
Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. | Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. |
No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. | No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. |
Also if anyone competes as an athlete, he doesn’t win the prize unless he competes according to the rules. | And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. |
The hard-working farmer ought to be the first to receive his share of the crops. | The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits. |
ὃ
Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. | Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. |
Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel, | Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: |
for which I suffer hardship even to imprisonment as a criminal; but the word of God is not imprisoned. | Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. |
For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory. | Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. |
ὁ
It is a trustworthy statement: For if we died with him, we will also live with him; | It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: |
2:12 εἰ
καὶ
If we endure, we will also reign with him; If we deny him, he also will deny us; | If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: |
If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. An Unashamed Workman | If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself. |
Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. | Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. |
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. | Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. |
2:16 τὰς

16 τὰς

But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, | But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. |
2:17 καὶ

and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, | And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; |
men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some. | Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. |
2:19 ὁ

τοῦ
τὴν

Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who names the name of the Lord is to abstain from wickedness.” | Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. |
Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honour and some to dishonour. | But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. |
Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honour, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. | If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. |
Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. | Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. |
But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels. | But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. |
The Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, | And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, |
with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, | In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; |
and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. | And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. |

But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. | This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. |
For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, | For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, |
unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, | Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, |
treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, | Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; |

holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. | Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. |
For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, | For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, |
always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. | Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. |
Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith. | Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. |
οὐ

ἐπὶ
But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes's and Jambres's folly was also. | But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their's also was. |
Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, | But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, |
οἷά

ἐν
ἐν

persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me! | Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. |
Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. | Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. |
But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. | But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. |
You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, | But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; |
and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. | And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. |
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; | All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: |
so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. | That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. |

I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: | I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; |
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with [a]great patience and instruction. | Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. |
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, | For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; |
and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. | And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. |
But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. | But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. |
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. | For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. |
