| Then after an interval of fourteen years I went up again to Jerousalēm with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. | Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerousalēm with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also. |
|
δὲ
| It was because of a revelation that I went up; and I submitted to them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain. | And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain. |
| But not even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. | But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised: |
| But it was because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage. | And that because of false brothers unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage: |
| But we didn’t yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you. | To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. |
|

| But from those who were of high reputation (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me. | But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me: |
| But on the contrary, seeing that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Petros had been to the circumcised | But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Petros; |
| (for he who effectually worked for Petros in his apostleship to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles), | (For he that wrought effectually in Petros to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) |
| and recognizing the grace that had been given to me, Jakōb and Cephas and Jōannēs, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we might go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. | And when Jakōb, Cephas, and Jōannēs, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. |
| They only asked us to remember the poor—the very thing I also was eager to do. | Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do. |
| But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. | But when Petros was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. |

| For prior to the coming of certain men from Jakōb, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision. | For before that certain came from Jakōb, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision. |
| The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. | And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. |
| But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, “If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? | But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Petros before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? |
| “We are Jews by nature and not sinners from among the Gentiles; | We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, |

| nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified. | Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. |

| But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? May it never be! | But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. |

| I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me. | I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. |

| You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? | O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? |
|

| This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? | This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? |
| Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? | Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? |
|
| Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? | Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. |
| So then, does he who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? | He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? |
| Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. | Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. |
| Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. | Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. |
| The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” | And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. |
| So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer. | So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. |

| For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who doesn’t abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them.” | For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. |

| Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, “The righteous man shall live by faith.” | But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. |
| However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, “He who practices them shall live by them.” | And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. |

| Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”— | Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: |
| in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. | That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. |

| Brothers, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it. | Brothers, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. |

| Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. he doesn’t say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ. | Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. he saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. |
|
δὲ
| What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, doesn’t invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. | And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. |
|
3:18 εἰ

| For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise. | For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. |

| Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. | Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. |
| Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one. | Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. |
|
3:21 ὁ
οὖν
τῶν
[τοῦ
θεοῦ];
μὴ
| Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. | Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. |
| But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. | But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. |
| But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. | But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. |
| Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. | Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. |
| But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. | But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. |
| For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. | For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. |
| For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. | For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. |
|

| There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. | There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. |
| And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise. | And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. |

| Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he doesn’t differ at all from a slave although he is owner of everything, | Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; |
| but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father. | But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. |
| So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world. | Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: |
| But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, | But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, |
| so that he might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. | To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. |
|
4:6 Ὅτι
δὲ

ὁ
τὸ
τοῦ
εἰς
τὰς

| Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” | And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. |
|

| Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God. | Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. |
| However at that time, when you didn’t know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods. | Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. |
| But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again? | But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? |
| You observe days and months and seasons and years. | Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. |
| I fear for you, that perhaps I have laboured over you in vain. | I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. |
|

ὡς

| I beg of you, brothers, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have done me no wrong; | Brothers, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all. |
| but you know that it was because of a bodily illness that I preached the gospel to you the first time; | Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first. |
| and that which was a trial to you in my bodily condition you didn’t despise or loathe, but you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus himself. | And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. |
|
4:15 ποῦ
οὖν
ὁ
| Where then is that sense of blessing you had? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. | Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me. |
| So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth? | Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth? |
| They eagerly seek you, not commendably, but they wish to shut you out so that you will seek them. | They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them. |
| But it is good always to be eagerly sought in a commendable manner, and not only when I am present with you. | But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you. |
| My children, with whom I am again in labour until Christ is formed in you— | My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you, |
| but I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you. | I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you. |
| Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law? | Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? |
| For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman. | For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. |
| But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise. | But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. |
|
| This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar. | Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. |
|
4:25 τὸ
δὲ
ἐν
τῇ
| Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerousalēm, for she is in slavery with her children. | For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerousalēm which now is, and is in bondage with her children. |
| But the Jerousalēm above is free; she is our mother. | But Jerousalēm which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. |
|
γάρ,
ἡ
οὐ
καὶ
ἡ
οὐκ
| For it is written, “Rejoice, barren woman who doesn’t bear; Break forth and shout, you who are not in labour; For more numerous are the children of the desolate Than of the one who has a husband.” | For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. |
| And you brothers, like Isaak, are children of promise. | Now we, brothers, as Isaak was, are the children of promise. |
| But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now also. | But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. |
|
τί
ἡ
| But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, For the son of the bondwoman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman.” | Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. |
| So then, brothers, we are not children of a bondwoman, but of the free woman. | So then, brothers, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free. |

5:1 τῇ

| It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and don’t be subject again to a yoke of slavery. | Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. |
| Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. | Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. |
| And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. | For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. |
| You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. | Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. |
| For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. | For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. |
| For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love. | For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. |
|
| You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? | Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? |
| This persuasion didn’t come from him who calls you. | This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. |
| A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough. | A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. |

| I have confidence in you in the Lord that you will adopt no other view; but the one who is disturbing you will bear his judgment, whoever he is. | I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be. |

| But I, brothers, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished. | And I, brothers, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased. |
| I wish that those who are troubling you would even mutilate themselves. | I would they were even cut off which trouble you. |
|
γὰρ
ἐπ᾿
| For you were called to freedom, brothers; only don’t turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. | For, brothers, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. |
| For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” | For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. |
| But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. | But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. |
| But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. | This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. |
| For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. | For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. |
| But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. | But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. |
| Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, | Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, |
| idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, | Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, |
| envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. | Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. |
| But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, | But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, |
|
| gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. | Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. |
| Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. | And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. |
| If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. | If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. |
| Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another. | Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. |
Chapter 6
| NAS | TextRec |
|---|---|
| Brothers, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. | Brothers, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. |
| Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. | Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. |
| For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. | For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. |
| But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. | But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. |
| For each one will bear his own load. | For every man shall bear his own burden. |
| The one who is taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him. | Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. |
|
6:7 μὴ
οὐ
| Don’t be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. | Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. |
| For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. | For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. |
| Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we don’t grow weary. | And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. |
| So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith. | As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. |
| See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. | Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand. |
| Those who desire to make a good showing in the flesh try to compel you to be circumcised, simply so that they will not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. | As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. |
| For those who are circumcised don’t even keep the Law themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh. | For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. |
| But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. | But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. |
| For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. | For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. |
| And those who will walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israēl of God. | And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israēl of God. |
|

| From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand-marks of Jesus. | From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. |
